How wide is the gap between Jalen Hurts and Brock Purdy? | NFL | SPEAK

The San Francisco 49ers will travel to Philadelphia to face the Eagles in the youngest QB matchup during an NFC Championship Game in history. Brock Purdy and Jalen Hurts 7-0 in the team's past seven games. Eagles Head Coach Nick Sirianni called Purdy 'a winner.' Hurts was a first round pick, while Purdy is Mr. Irrelevant (final pick of the draft) but how wide is the gap between the two young QBs? Emmanuel Acho, Joy Taylor, LeSean McCoy and David Helman debate on the gap size by comparing both QB's skills, seasons and value to their teams.

  • Acho is always the most critical thinker of the bunch and his takes make a lot of sense. I think he’s arguing that the gap in production is narrower than what others think it is, not in overall talent. And that’s what matters most in winning football games. The rest of the panel can’t focus on that take. They just want to focus on the fact that Jalen is a better and more talented qb. Which I don’t think anyone disagrees with, including Acho. Also, didn’t everyone almost write Jalen off like a year ago? Everyone’s acting like he’s played this well for the past 3 years.

    • Context matters. Dak has been mediocre all season, him playing well that game meant he turned the page on that narrative... except he didn't. He was in debt, that's why people didn't gave him credit. Hurts on the other hand played at an exceptional level all season. Him beating the Giants was more of a "oh yea, now I remember why Hurts was leading the MVP vote before he got hurt" moment. What Jalen did to the Giants was the norm. What Dak did to the Bucs was the exception. I'm talking about this season ofc.

He's not asked to make a ton of throws which is what we saw in the last game. They kept Deebo and CMC in check for the most part at the LOS and he looked pedestrian. They both have stacked teams but they hold Hurts in a higher regard because he is crucial to that offense, we saw what happened when he was out. And we saw what happened when Purdy wasn't the QB, Jimmy G played in a SB. Simple as that. Purdy can be the next Kurt Warner or Tom Brady but all evidence points to the 49ers success being about coaching and the system rather than the possibility of Brock Purdy being an outlier that only happens "0.008%" of the time in the NFL. It's basic logic.

I've watched every snap brock has ever taken and he does some elite things with his decision making. He moves linebackers with his eyes constantly, throws with anticipation and accuracy even when flushed out of the pocket and goes through progressions quickly and efficiently. He's always looking down field to make a play and actually pushes the ball down field way more than people give him credit for.

    • How much of his success is solely due to playing under Shanahan? I'm not trying to downplay what he's done so far this season but until we see Purdy face some real adversity, meaning having to make the right decision and the right throw when the play that was called gets disrupted by great coverage or this Eagles historic pass rush. He could very well wind up being a very special talent who has a great career... OR he could wind up being a flash in the pan who was a nice story until it wasn't. Eagles defense is elite at getting to the QB, better than the Cowboys, who actually made him show some signs of a struggle but not enough... I can't wait for this game on Sunday. He's passed every test he's been given so far and this will be his biggest yet but he's not alone. Both rosters are elite and im hoping it's a good competitive game and both teams bring their A game. • QB performance, any individuals performance, in a team game is highly dependent on how well the team does. QBs needs WR to also perform and catch the ball. QBs need RBs and TEs to YAC and make the first tackler miss. Its a team game, people. Coaches and strategy are also part of this play calling game. This comparison is not a very good exercise to do, and only for show. Probably not useful for a general manager, but very entertaining to the general public that may or may not know football.

    • Lets not forget QBs, TEs, RBs are nothing w/o their offensive linemen creating a pocket for QB, creating a hole for RB, setting up for a TE, etc. Team game, team performance dependent. This all being said, given we know Purdy can perform on virtually equal high level to any QB in the league, in a GM role I'd pick Purdy: salary range for 1st year QBs, runs Shanahan's offensive scheme well, future growth after current high level play, and ability to outperform Jimmy G (only slightly, Jimmy G is an elite QB in the league), 10-yard splits, and team culture fit are just some of the many positive factors

    • The fact that Hurts had less than total 200 yards doesn't mean he didn't play well or that the Giants "stopped him". The Eagles blew out the Giants, Hurts having less than 200 yards means they didn't need any more than to beat their opponent because other players had an amazing game. Actually, every single yard in that stat sheet by Hurts was in key moments, watch the highlights and you'll see. It's either a deep bomb, a pass/run to convert a 3rd down or a TD. And accusing Hurts or the Eagles of playing mediocre competition is a bit hypocritical if you look at the 49ers road to the NFCCG. Y'all had a cake walk season just as the Eagles, the Cowboys was the first real team y'all played all season and even then, they're known for being choke artists in the playoffs and their pass rush has been in free fall since week 13 or something. Cowboys never had an amazing defense, they had Micah Parsons, who is a generational talent, destroying people, and a overrated CB that sometimes plays well, most of the time gets burnt. We scored 26 and 34 points on that defense. And the game we scored 34 we did it with Minshew. The 49ers haven't played a defense, nor an offense like the Eagles. And to be fair, the Eagles also didn't play a rushing offense like the 49ers. That's why the game will be awesome.

Kyle called more pass plays during the first half & was mixing in runs to the edge to tire out Dallas. By 4th qtr the holes were opening up more for CMC. Hurts is definitely an elite qb & I would gladly have him leading my team. Purdy is too. His job is to take care of the football & get it to your playmakers. That’s every QBs job. SF is a well rounded team & don’t require Superman heroics from one individual player. They all do their job.

Hurts hasn't done anything so far, you can't talk like he's Brady, Rodgers or even Mahomes. The gap between these two QBs isn't that big on the field. Scoring a TD with 23 seconds left on a Purdy 20 yard pass to his TE, Iowa St. elected to go for two and the win. Purdy threw an interception on the two point conversion as he was being sacked. Had to throw it and by and large the OK db took the ball out of Iowas St. receivers hands. Final score OK 42, Iowa St. 41. Not sure this Eagles Niners matchup will be able to top that game.
