Bonjour à tous,
This week in the Chateau Cottage update, Tony has been a busy little bee. working away night after night to get the cottage sorted for Christmas, with laying the new beautiful stone effect floor tiles in the salon and creating the room layout upstairs. You can really start to see the cottage coming together and the hard work from Tony showing through.
Plus, Tracy needs your help to find a big beautiful coach lantern light for the landing and master bedroom, she has managed to get 3 lights for the cottage but is struggling to find any more at a bargain price.
---------------- so we need your help for Tracy to get a light in time for Christmas ----------------
If you have any ideas or manage to find a light please comment or send a email to, chateaudelalacelle@gmail.com

ABOUT US,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.
Please subscribe and follow our families journey, with the up’s and down’s in moving from the UK to rural France and restoring this beautiful building to its former glory.

  • Tracy, you have grown from being shy at first in front of the camera into this confident delightful, hard working, getter down gal. You are a natural in front of the camera and really make us feel connected.

  • A loft bed in Jonathon's room would provide more floor space for work/play space -- if he needs it. Our son had one for many years and loved.

  • The cottage is looking so good. The exposed beams make the space feel cozy and truly exhibit the soaring height of the space in the upstairs rooms. Glad you decided on the spare room. It will make winter more bearable for Terry and Ashe until they finish their space in the chateau. In the blink of an eye you all will be in the cottage very soon!

  • You have an enormous volume of space and you need a fixture that is also large--or several large ones. Another thing you might what to do is hide some spotlights in your beams to shine up on the ceiling. You really want to highlight that beautiful structure.

    • Good idea! That spare room doesn’t have a window so that would help. Or even open fretwork. It would allow heat to circulate into the rooms at night with the doors closed.

  • I can't help feeling slightly sad that the original tommettes aren't being used on the salon floor, but practicality is really important. And I've seen so many French houses ruined by totally hideous modern shiny tiles. The ones that you've selected are perfect to set off the colour of the fireplace and I like the fact that they have a random, almost riven appearance. The attention to detail and quality of finish remain as high as ever. Great work guys 🥰

  • The cottage is looking beautiful! You’ve done a fantastic job picking the finishes. Some people want to keep everything as original as possible, which is also great, but styles have always changed and chateaus were often redecorated to fit the current trends. I think you’ve done a great job of incorporating the cottage’s original features when you can.

  • Have you thought about doing rustic black iron light fixtures? I think it would suit the cottage really well. Check online for second hand ones that would suit, any colour , then spray paint them matt black. The silvery one you have in the main room would look amazing in a black finish.Very budget friendly. The cottage is really coming together😊👍

  • The cottage is looking better and better. Wish I could help with the light fitting but since you can't see me waving my arms around when I'm describing it......... You can see the space it needs to go better than us, and you are going to have geometric lines with the beams to contends with also. But I am absolutely loving the rens...everyone should have a Tony!!!!

  • Wow, Tony is truly "cracking on"....I like your idea of the Coach House look Tracy, that would be my choice as well in that type of building! I've seen similar lights here in Canada, so if you're stuck over there, perhaps I can check here for you? I have to say though, as far as the actual Chateau goes....I have to stick with Terry and his love of chandeliers...it just fits! Have you checked IKEA for this type of light fixture....it almost has a Scandinavian look??? I continue to love your videos Terry! Good job!

  • Thoughts on lighting for upstairs…. Suggest you look at getting a reversible ceiling fan. (No light attachment just fan) Size 1.5 - 2 meters in a dark finish. You can get simple, sleek design that will not draw your attention (you want it to not be noticeable). Reversible with variable speeds with remote. Look for one with whisper quiet motor. They are great for that volume of open space to keep hot n cool air moving. You keep it clockwise in winter on a very low speed, moves warm air that has risen up, down where you want it and counterclockwise in summer for opposite. Ideal placement would be over stairway, but you’ll need to adjust some with ceiling light placement. Look at adding a couple of wall sconces on landing that are dimmable and on own switch that can be switched on/off at top and bottom of stairs in conjunction with ceiling light that would also be dimmable and switch on/off at top and bottom of stairs also on its own switch. This would give you lighting options for evenings when Tony n Tracy are in their open sleeping area/bedroom and guests or Jonathan coming up later. You could just have wall sconces on and not larger ceiling light that could keep Tony n Tracy up. Look at placement of wall sconces on storage closest wall (where you mentioned hanging a mirror) and opposite small wall (that forms your little nook area). Good choice on your carriage lights for salon. Would be great if you could find larger versions for upstairs. You could also do a search for drum lights. Usually a bit more contemporary design but easier to find larger scale fixtures that you need upstairs and you may find something that could work.

  • I love the light style put into main room of the cottage. Elegant, but not too much so for the setting. One of my favorite styles. The same thing, but lots bigger, should be perfect for the space upstairs needing a big light. The only thing about which I have concern is the shelf on the fireplace, as you won't have space to place anything such as a clock, photos, candles, etc. (I did the same and spent a lot of time pulling it out and putting in a 20cm depth shelf). The cottage will be the perfect home when it is finished, and I'm looking forward to seeing the curtains in place. As always, fantastic work!
