A Walnut Turning For Valerie! - Wood Turning
Many years ago, when I first started this channel, a lady showed up with a half pickup load of wood to help get me started. Her name is Valerie and she has contributed wood to my channel many times, since! I've only met her that one time but we have corresponded many times over the years. She is also a woodturner and has a knack for finding wood. I turned one of her pieces a little while back and she mentioned she would like to have something turned from one of the cutoffs of that piece of Black Walnut. So, this is what I came up with. Finished in shellac.

I think we all knew you would like it, Valerie. Bill
Phew!!
My pleasure, Valerie and I'm so glad you like it! 😊
Valerie, did you ever venture into trying out that Ornamental Turning tool? If so, I would love to see what you created with it.
Phil you used the term BIG NAME WOODTURNERS, to those of us that follow you there is no bigger than Phil Anderson. Valerie will love the vase its beautiful
I agree with that. I watch a lot of wood turners and compare their work to Phil's. Many come close but so far none have been better.
I love the vase, and Phil is a very humble and regular guy in spite of his large number of subscribers. Good person to have as a turning buddy!
I agree with you. Phil says you're a good friend too. I don't personally know either of you. You both have my respect and admiration.
Thank you, Frank! 😊
Thank you Judith!
Glad to see Valerie likes the vase, but then what's not to like? Another piece of Phil's wooden magic.
😊
Val, I love what mother nature has given us. Please don’t try to change Phil.
Haha, she likes it, Robert! 😄
Enjoy watching your work and listening to your comments along the way. You’re the best. I’m 79 and getting into turning.
That is awesome, Joseph! Enjoy! 😊
This is the one I personally like the most Phil , watch you alot, thanks for being you ❤
I'm glad, thank you, Pearl! 😊
If Val doesn't want that, I'll take it! I love it! I'm sure Val will too!
😊
Correct, I do love it! Glad you do too. 😜 I think Phil did a wonderful job of blending what both he and I like about turned wood and wood turning.
That's one of the loveliest vases I have ever seen.
Nice! Thanks, Judith! 😊

All I can say is Valerie, you are one fortunate lady!! Absolutely lovely!! Glad you left the bark, great contrast!!
I'm glad you like it, Colleen, thank you! 😊
Thanks, Colleen, I sure am. Lucky to have a good turning friend like Phil, and now one of his turnings too.

She even likes it, Susanne! 😊
Gorgeous vase! Live with it Valerie! Lol🤗
😊
Will do! It is now in a place of honor in my wood turnings display case. Still have not decided which view is the front.
Gorgeous piece. Love that touch of bark. It gives the piece extra character. If Valerie doesn't like it, she can send it over to me. LOL Thanks for sharing. 😃💛👍
I love it, so no need to get your address!

It just moved from the mantle to my new (used) wood turnings display case. Put it on the top shelf right up front. (still “for all to enjoy”) 😂. Glad Phil inspires you to do your best.
Phil you are a big name wood turner. You’re number 1. 🫶🎩🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆
Haha, I appreciate the effort, David! 😊
That is beautiful Phil and no wonder Valerie loves it. Superb work my friend and what a nice way to spend nearly 30 minutes with a mug of tea. Take care Phil. Cheers, Huw
Thank you, Huw and Merry Christmas! 😊
Huw, it is now happily ensconced in my new (used) wood turnings display cabinet. And now one of my favorite pieces, too. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours! Glad to see you back at the lathe!
@@valeriehenschel1590 Hi Valerie. So pleased it's arrived safely and now on display in your new (used) wood turning display cabinet. It is really nice to be back on the lathe turning bigger items again I have to admit. I do love making my pens but I love turning and testing myself on bigger items. Hope you have a Very Happy New Year Valerie. Take care. Cheers, Huw
It’s a lovely vase, and the bark looks like an intentional medallion . Hope she likes it. I do.
Yep, I love it❤!
😊
I think she will love it Phil. It's you.
I do love it!❤
😊
Thank You Phil, Thank You Valerie... HA, Phil... "A man's got to do what a man's got to do"... "Once a bark guy always a bark guy"... "You can take a barky woodturner to a barky woodturning BUT you can't make him turn it off"... I like the bead on top and the overall shape. Walnut can not be beat for its beauty..... Until next time Phil.... TM
Thank you Tuffy. I think Phil did a wonderful job of keeping both bark and exposing that beautiful figured black walnut under the bark. And such a beautiful design, too. Truly a beautiful piece worthy of a place of honor in my house!
@@valeriehenschel1590 YES Valerie you have a winner 4 sure 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Thanks, Tuffy, for your upbeat comment! 😊
Awesome piece I am sure Valerie will love it!!!!
Yep, I do!!!

The more I look at it the more I love it Phil
😊
It turned out so beautiful! It wouldn't be yours without the bark so Valerie should love it because it is so you!
She said she loves it, Dianne, whew! It's on it's way to her, now! 😊
I’m sure Valerie will love it. Carole and I do. And (as Shakespeare) put it, “Above all else, to thine own self be true”. Or, in more modern language, “You have to do you, you can’t rightly do someone else.”
😊
I love how Phil put both of our likings into the piece. Bark for him, and figured walnut wood for me. He was true to both of us!
Valerie has to love this vase. It is part her and part Phil. It turned out beautiful. It’s the turning and the natural that makes it wonderful. Thanks for the show. Joel
Yes! Thank you, Joel! 😊
Yes!
Love the finish and the bark. Hope Valery liked it. You did another awesome turning.
She does like it, Stewart, hooray! Thank you! 😃

Well, we in the Phil fan club will all like your decision to keep some of the the bark on; that's what makes it a 'Phil piece'! Let's hope Valerie likes it as well; she will certainly appreciate having an 'original by Phil'! Thanks to Valerie, and thanks to you, Phil, for sharing.
Exactly
Also, it displays the beauty of nature
😊
You are right on, David! I love it, appreciate my original Phil turning, and think Phil did an excellent job on it.

Thank you, Amanda! Cindy picked up the vase today and is on her way to Valerie! 😊
And it is now in my display case in a position of honor. Just can’t decide which side is front, so I turn it a little each day. 😂
Valerie is very lucky! It's beautiful!😍

Looks great, Phil. I am sure Valerie loved it as well.
She said she does, Scott! 😄
I think it looks great, Phil. She can say she got it from a big time woodturner and wouldn't be lying. Bill
So true, Bill. But mostly I love the actual turning and that it was done by a friend.
@@valeriehenschel1590 That's really the most important thing.

Another Awesome turning Phil, I'm partial to your approach ( leaving some of the bark on your turnings) I'm certin Valarie will be very pleased with it. Thank you Valerie for supplying the walnut and thank you Phil for sharing another awesome turning.
It's on it's way to her as we speak, Dan! Thanks, buddy! 😊
Thanks Dan. I like sending him wood that he enjoys turning. Finding pieces for Phil with just the right potential and character is a good challenge and not just any piece will make the trip to Phil’s shop.
If Valarie doesn't want it I do bc it's absolutely beautiful 💖💞💖🥰💖💞💖
Haha, she already has it in her possession, Duchess! I'm so glad you like it, though, thank you! 😊

I love the color of the black walnut!
😊
Great decision to leave the bark, Phil. It turned out beautifully! Glad to see Valerie is pleased with your work! Phew!
😊
How could I not be? It is a wonderful combination of what both Phil and I enjoy in wood turning.
Howdy Phil Black walnut .... one of my favorites ....love that knot on the side . Couple of times I was going to make a large tool box out of Black Walnut for my machinist tools got so busy ....so I bought Kennedy ....I have 5 of them !... O always slowly apply finish on the walnut , so satisfying looking at it change ... Val can not hate the bark .... she does watch you .... Such a beautiful wood and so expensive . keep on turnin'
Yes, turning Walnut is a rare treat, Bruce. The vase is on it's way to Valerie now! 😊 I have two Kennedy's and a Gerstner!
Wow, that really turned out great. That black walnut is awesome! I agree with you about the feature on the top, the bead and cove really look nice.
😊
Hi Phil , I'm not usually a fan on vases but that is one beautiful piece !! Al
😊
Another beautiful piece of art Phil. The bark looks great and the ring around the top adds to the beauty. Thanks again for sharing
Many thanks, Doug! 😊
That is one stunning piece of work. I’m not a wood turner, but I enjoy watching you wok.
I appreciate that, Carmen, thank you! 😊
Hi Phil. When you first started turning this vase & the talk from Valerie was that she wanted the bark gone & you debated with yourself to 'leave or not to leave'. Right from the start I kept saying 'leave some Phil, stay true to yourself & leave some'. Well, you DID stay true to yourself I I am another of your fan club that is glad that you did. I too hope that Valerie likes the finished piece, I think it is quite stunning. I love everything about this Black Walnut & 'hats off' to you mate on a superb job, looks really great with its superb finish on it. Stay well my friend, cheers, Don from South Aust.
She says she loves it and it's on her way right now, Don. Thank you my friend! 😊
Truth is, I like bark. Just not as much as Phil does! I think he did a wonderful job of blending what both of us enjoy about turned wood and wood turning. Glad you like it too.
Beautiful piece of wood. The creative bead worked out nicely as well. Planned of course. 🙂
😊
I hope Valerie is pleased. I am , nice job Phil . When I sell I just have a once a year Christmas sale. I set all the pieces out that I can part with and let the feeding frenzy begin . I love when the bidding wars happen. lol.
😊
Very nice Phil, and looks like your customer and friend likes it! Great work as always...
😊
Greetings from the English branch of the Phil fan club (can’t believe I’m the only one). I agree that a bit of bark is best - it’s called ‘wood turning’ after all! Wondrous things are done with resin but I for one like the wood to speak for itself and you Phil are a master at bringing out the conversation. Thanks for another great video.
Thank you, Alex! I and all my viewers love you guys in the UK! 😊
Dam Phil I love the dark brown colors. Nice another silk purse.
😊
Valerie is so lucky to get that beautiful vase. Remember Phil she asked for a piece that you made, and wow what a beauty.
😊
I like the ‘happy little accident’ and I’m sure Valerie will love it as much as I do 🌞

Thank you Tina. It has a happy home now in my display case of turnings.
Hi Phil. Ha she did get it from some big name wood turner!!! I love the shape of the rim it really sets off the top of vase, and yes it has to have the bark. The turning police would have been at your door if you turned it all away. I’m sure Valerie will love it. Be well stay strong and see you in the next video.
You are correct, I do love it! I am not anti-bark, I just like it in smaller doses than Phil. I think he got just the right balance of bark and exposed figured walnut on this one. Does not get much better in my opinion!
Very well said Valerie!!
A gorgeous vase, Phil, it would have been criminal not to include the bark, it adds so much richness to the whole piece. I love it, and i'm sure Valerie will too. Thank you both for making this possible, and enjoy this little beauty. Have a great week.💛🫂😊
I do love it !❤
😊
I really like it, if she doesn't like it she can turn the bark to the wall !
Nope, the bark will be where I can enjoy looking at it! I think Phil did an excellent job of keeping some bark while exposing the beautiful figured wood underneath.
