Rustic Driftwood Bean Pot? - Wood Turning
This is a cutoff from the Driftwood Surprise piece I turned a few months ago. The wood is Myrtle from Oregon and was a very pleasant surprise for the first piece. This piece was supposed to be a lived edge bowl but it just wasn't having it! After a couple of false starts, I learned what it wanted to be all along, much to my surprise!

Thanks, Rick! 😊
It is like magic watching a piece of wood come to life!
I'm glad you were here to see it, Tina, thanks! 😊
I love your channel and how you enhance and beautify nature herself. I'll on this occasion offer a rueful smile as it's always good to know the the old girl often wins. Please keep working with her and sharing with us. Well done Phil, looking forward to the next one.
Thank you for taking your time to watch and comment, James, much appreciated! 😊
This bean pot plant holder is a very cute departure from your normal fare! Charming! That the cracks make a star pattern on one side is so cool!☺️
Thanks a lot, Linda! 😊
It never seizes to amaze me of what might come out of a piece of timber. This is a unique piece of art. Thanks for teaching and sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it, Stanley, thanks! 😊
That's a cracking little pot Phil. I like it. Thank you to Denis and his lady for giving and you for sharing and see you soon.
😊
Yep, trash to treasure. That's what it's all about, and you are very good at that indeed. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching! 😊
Help! Someone has hacked Phil's KZhead account. Paint and removing all the bark! 😁 Nice job Phil. Always something different, and I look forward to each video you post.
LOL! Good one, Mark! I feel the same way! 😊
Yeah, Mark; 'Uncle' Phil is the best... him and 'The Papa (Gary) 1947'❣️
@@Henry_Little Yep. I subscribe to The Papa also.
Just another great piece Phil 👌. I hope you are feeling better. I have tried to create the same pieces that you show. I get so much inspiration from you. Yes. I also have turned a bad dream boul and love it. I look forward to seeing you for many more years
Who said that you can't teach an old dog new tricks. You are an open book of creativity. No closed mind here. I would have never thought about doing anything close to what you did. And I would have missed an opportunity.
Thank you, Rick! 😊
Hi Phil, You continue to amaze with turning nothing into "something". Another very neat project to say the least!! Take Care, Myles
Thanks, Myles, will do! 😊
Nice window sill planter Phil. The blackish hue gives it a cool aged presence. Thanks Phil. Another gem "for aaaallll to enjoy". 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed it, Kersi, thank you! 😊
I really enjoy watching you work on pieces that “aren’t like you” as it shows how to keep going till you get something you like. Alter all, that’s life.
Sure enough, Shari. 😊
Something different is always good. Thanks for sharing Phil. Stay Safe, Best regards Jules, Droitwich, England
Thanks a lot, Jules! 😊
I think it's quite nice! Sometimes it's nice to go against what you normally do. You grow as an artist! It's lovely!
Thank you, Julee! 😊
Boy, was I surprised. Life is full of surprises isn’t it!
😊
I like this Bean Pot a lot. Especially the cracks that look like daddy long legger hanging on the outside of the bowl.
I like that part too, Freddie! 😊
You shouldnt apologize for experimenting. Its the only way we learn and discover new ways to do stuff :) I think it turned out great. Thx for sharing!
😊
I really like the finished effect of the black paint on the end grain, and the trick with the wire wool was clever. Thank you sir for sharing these ideas👍😄
😊
you have two thumbs up from me Phil. I'm never disappointed with a Shady Acers creation
😊
This one made you work awfully hard for what you got. Turned out well.
😊
Do you have me amazed I was ready to throw that away and at the very end you pull out a miracle and instantly I went from trash to treasure Way to go Phil
Cool, thanks, Duane! 😊
I think my three year old grandson would love to use this pot, in the garden, or at the beach. Nice one!
Cool, thanks, Stephanie! 😊
I enjoyed the process and I like how the black has picked out that end grain
Thanks, Dutch! 😊
It's lovely! It has a nice rustic, homey look to it. Any plant would be honored to call it home! Very nice job, Phil!
That's the look I was going for, Elyse. Thank you! 😊
I love how you respect what Mother Nature provides you. You always want to retain as much as you can of the original material -- including bark, if any. So what we see in the end is a piece of work demonstrating that respect, while at the same time it's transforming it into an amalgamation of both Nature and Art, each of which can be readily seen.
Well said, Ole, thank you! 😊
That's amazing, what a result 😀
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Another winner, Phil.
Thank you, Connie!
A joy to watch and to listen to.
Thank you for doing just that, Tom! 😊
It is the neatest little pot. Keep trying, you always come up with the craziest (in the best way) shapes. Thank you.
😊
I really like the rustic simplicity of it! Great job!
Cool, thanks, Nicole! 😊
Good morning, Phil. I love watching a project morph into the finished piece. Start with basic ingredients, wood and tools. Apply a bit of imagination and stir slowly. My imagination was trying to keep up with yours. Wonderful!
It was a confusing time for sure, Ray! 😊
You did again. Took a piece of fire wood and turned it into something rustic and special. Bravo to your hard work, talent, imagination and faith. May you inspire others to do the same in their own lives challenges!!
Wow, thank you, Michael! 😊
Phil, I really enjoy your videos. I'm almost 85 (in Nov.) and during this whole COVID thing I've become addicted to videos on KZhead of people making or fixing things with their hands. From a wheelwright in Joliet, Montana to a couple of guys building a wooden boat in Western Massachusetts I've got my favorites that I like to watch every week. I've never built anything in my life with my hands. I went to college after 4 years as a Chinese translator in the Air Force and sat behind a desk for 31 years but I really have a great appreciation for craftsmen and artists such as yourself that make beautiful objects and show us the process and the tools you use to ply your craft. Thanks so much for the enjoyment you provide and the wisdom you impart. I feel richer for having found something that brings me such joy.
I'm right there with you, John. I enjoy watching videos of people working with their hands no matter what it is they are doing. It must be popular with many others, too, because there are tons of videos like that. Thank you for watching mine! 😊
good job Phil, glad it stayed together so we could see what it wanted to be...
😊
I was practically shouting at the screen, “No, Phil, that’s too much paint!” That heavy body acrylic paint is doing exactly what it does. Try fluid acrylic paints, or at least thin it with water. I like that you’re experimenting; keep it up! 👍🏾
Great point! Thank you, Nashay! 😊
I like it. Looks like a cauldron. Soo cute. 👍👍
It does! 😊
Looks good, Phil. You said this wasn't your normal but you were wrong. You took what the wood gave you. That's your normal completely. Take care. Bill
Thanks, Bill, I appreciate that!
what a wonderful surprise you found in the wood
😊
I love the black paint, when you took took off a lot of the black you can still see the grain and I love it. ❤️❤️
Perfect, Sandy, thank you! 😊
I like it! The black paint and the brass handle was a fun surprise☺
Yay, thank you, Lili! 😊
some times you have to leave your comfort zone to make fine art. looks good
Absolutely! Not sure this qualifies as fine art but I like your comment, L W! 😊
Well sometimes you hae to think outside of the box and you just did that it is amazing Mr. Phil, take care stay safe god bless
Thanks, Donald! 😊
That is really nice. The paint really shows the grain.
Thank you, Casseniette! 😊
Nice save. Turned a sows ear into a silk purse.
😊
I just love how you approach a piece and let us into your thought process. This is the reality of Woodturning. We have a concept and then change as we go along to fit the wood. I sooo look forward to Thursday. The handle was a brilliant idea and set it off.
😊
One of the many things I’m learning is experimentation. While this is not typically you, I like what you ended up with. Novel. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Rick! 😊
Never apologize! Speaking for myself, I tune in to watch whatever you do. I know it will be creative and entertaining. Sometimes the wood just does what it does and I appreciate that you can just go with it!
😊
Always entertaining and innovative work Phil. ❤
I'm so glad you think so, thank you! 😊
I love it as a hanging planter!
Cool idea, Judy! 😀
Love the tips and explanations for why you do things, always happy to learn new things (like the safety tip about holding the steel wool with the vice-grips). Thank you! :)
Glad they are helpful, Morgan, thank you! 😃
I Love it! The Black makes the grain pop some.
Cool, thanks, Michael! 😊
Sometimes you have plans for a piece of wood and it works. Other times the wood let you know what it wants to be. Once again, fine job!
😊
I think it turned out really nice! It’s good to change it up once in a while. I liked seeing you wing it and get creative with something new.
😊
Wonderful Thursday Phil, See ya next Thursday.
😊
I like it too, different than your normal projects. But, it is always good to try new ideas and projects.
Yes, thank you, Ken! 😊
Love the way you're willing to experiment and take risks, you didn't give up, creativity is all about that, which you got oodles of it, Phil. I really like this piece, although different from your usual work, it's got a rustic feel of days gone past that's plenty for me. Hope you can smell the aroma of the coffee! I can in the aether .....! 💛😊
Thank you so much, Scian! I love the smell of coffee in the morning! 😊

You sure are a good sport for trying to turn things your followers send you! Sometimes I wonder if they are friend or foe! 🤔 We always look forward to watching your videos!
Thank you so much, Kathy! 😊
Just 💜 it! 👏👏👏👏👏
😊
I think you should experiment more often. It is lovely.
Cool, thank you, Donna! 😊
Very unique and different I love it Phil take care and God bless
Thanks for watching, Mike! 😊
I like it after all. Nice and different 👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much 😊
That is so cute. Really like how it turned out. Definitely different for you but it looks great. 💕😊💕🇺🇸
Thank you for watching, Joalla! 😊
Hi Phil, I really enjoyed the video. I know also from experience that it takes a while to figure out what things will turn out as. But I liked the end results and think your full of ideas in making wonderful projects. Lord bless and keep us trying new things !!👍👍👍
Thanks for sharing, Eric! 😊
I really like how the black paint enhances the grain.
Thanks, Fred! 😊
Amazing rustic bean pot!
Thank you, Barb, I'm glad you like it! 😊
I like it, Phil. It would also look great full of sea shells as a display on an entryway table.
😊
Very cute and perfect for an air fern that you don't have to water. That black acrylic finish shows promise, but definitely needs a little work. I did like how it brought out the grain so delicately. Have a good weekend!
😊
Phil, I think you found the perfect design for this piece of driftwood. I, too, really like the brass handle and the planter idea. It was fun to watch you experiment with the color. Never hurts to try something new. Well done!
Cool, thanks, Greg! 😊
"This is unlike me" ... but this is you, and it's okay! No one defines you, except you - it looks fantastic Phil, and sometimes breaking out of your own box is what you need to expand and grow.
But I don't have to like it, Jeff! LOL!
Exactly. Stepping out of our comfort zone will also find ourselves stepping into new interests we may just find new things we do like.😁
Another great class, thanks for sharing! Each video is an adventure through your thoughts and expectations.
😊
All I can say is beware of strange people offering driftwood. ....Ha, that's was a great save of that piece for it's size. Stay safe my friend !
Haha, not what I expected at all from this piece, Dennis! But, it worked out and I'm so glad. Thank you, my friend! 😊
Thank you !!! I have watched all your videos and have learned a lot !!! You have totally inspired me to make really cool stuff !!!
I'm so glad, Eric, thanks for letting me know! 😊
Stepping outside the box! Nicely done! I like it :)
😊
Great to see you work outside your comfort zone. As always, I appreciate observing your thought process. A nice piece in the end. I love how it came together. Thank you for sharing the coffee grinder idea.
Thanks for watching and commenting, James! 😊
You're stepping out of your comfort zone Phil! I really enjoyed watching this come together, probably more than you lol. It was rather a problematic piece of wood, but you did good. Thanks for sharing your creativity with me again. Stay safe, Vickie
Thanks for picking up on all the details, Vickie, much appreciated! 😊
Definitely a different looking style from your normal stuff. But you pulled it out and did a great job Phil.
😊
It never ceases to amaze me what you manage to create from an odd, cracked piece of scary wood. Your finished product may not be quite what you initially intended but it is really one of a kind and I think it is SPECIAL!!!
Cool, thanks, Ted! 😊
...
You saved a tough piece. I do like it. Good for you
Thanks for watching, Paul! 😊
That was a really nice surprise outcome, Phil!
😊
It turned out fine, Phil. I like it!
Thank you!
good to see you experimenting with different things. I do love your videos as i also love the natural look on the wood. but sometimes its good to play with different ideas. keep up the good work.
Thank you, Dawn! 😊
Yes sir that is definitely different from your usual turning looks great sir ✌
😊
Nice rustic feel to it, like more than i expected to, kind of more then the sum of its parts, as always thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching and commenting, Celeste! 😊
Well done, Phil.
😊
It struck me when looking at the before and after, that the blackish finish kind of mimics the look of the bark that was on it. Cute little planter! The brass handle really finishes it up nicely. Great job, Phil!
Thanks for sticking with me, Marcia! 😊
Good rescue. Well done.
You are so kind, Mandy, thank you! 😊
I like it, very cute and different, nice job.
😊
It might not be you but who cares, love it!thanks Phil
I appreciate that, Art! 😊
Nice job Phil!!
😊
Nice Phil. I like it. Looking forward to the next piece.
😊
🐼 Big Bear Hugs from a 68 yr old grandma in Kirby, Texas, USA 🐼 ❤️ ❤️
😊
It could have cracked and been a throw away. A little glue and some coffee and it hangs on. I think that humble piece of driftwood is proud of what you turned it into. The handle is a great add!
Thanks, Gary, I'm glad you like it! 😊
I like it, Phil. That was a different concept with the paint, but it looks good. For the cracks, I save sanding dust from the different woods to match up almost any color. Coffee is also in my kit. Thanks for letting in on this.
Sounds great! 😊
Another fine job Phil.it turned out beautiful.
Thank you, Donald! 😊
I really love the bowl. A plant would look very nice.
Cool, thanks, Margaret! 😊
I like it, very cute.
Thank you! 😊
...Well, I'm glad you didn't bail on this one...turned out pretty nice! Sometimes you just need to wing it...
Glad you like it, thanks! 😊

I think the black made the grain and cracks stand out and was a good choice. Thank you and take care. Paul.
Thanks, Paul!
