One Winged Camellia Bowl! - Wood Turning
My friend Gary over at ThePapa1947 gave this piece of Camellia to me. I didn't know Camellia grew this large. The wood is very dense and hard and gave me some trouble in turning it, but the result was worth my hard work. I love the very odd, natural shape of this piece. By the way, I spelled Camellia wrong on the bottom of the bowl, dang it!

😊
Strange piece of wood. Unique bowl. Another winner. Good job.
Good morning, Garth! 😊 Thank you!
You take chunks of wood and turn them into pieces of art. Thank you for showing new turners that the wood doesn't have to be perfect!
You are very welcome, Dinah, thank you for watching! Perfect wood is sooo boring, I think. 😊
Very nice way to use a odd shaped piece of wood!
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Great job. You have an eye for the hidden beauty.
😊
Beautiful piece Beautiful wood. I love the side view of the grain. Beautiful grain. Beautiful job. Everything is 😍 Lol
Thank you very much, Glenda!
Thank You Phil, Thank You Gary ( ThePapa1947 )...Camellia seemed like she did not want to be turned at 12:48 ( Phil please do that each week, love the excitement. Almost dropped my late lunch!!! )...So much fun Phil to sit back, watch, listen on how you work through your turning adventure...Just for the record Phil, YOU ARE NEVER BORING!!! no matter how long your video runs. Great one Phil....TM
Haha, you're one of those guys that likes to watch Nascar just because you're hoping for a crash! Thanks for the laugh, Tuffy! Now it's dinner time!
Another beautiful piece Phil, 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you, Mark!
Another great piece of work Phil. Late night in Scotland, but a must watch with your elections as a TV alternative. No contest when choosing what to view.
I appreciate your time, Kevin! I don't blame you one bit! 😊
Phil it’s as cool as the other side of your pillow.
I love that side, John! 😊
You inspire me to look for odd places of wood and I found one in my wood pile this afternoon love your videos Thanks Phil .
Excellent! Good luck with your new masterpiece, Patrick!
Very nice. Wood looks pretty cool. Great job Phil.

Unusually georgeous👏👏👏👏👏👏🇬🇧

Hi Phil you and Gary must have both had a profitable visit, watched. both of you turn wood you had exchange as gifts. Enjoyed seeing them. A beautiful bowl, but I have not forgotten you owe us 2 Black Cherry. Can't wait to see if that small piece is a burl underneath. Hope you enjoyed the match. I've been watching the postponed 6 Nations Rugby Matches. God Bless stay safe. Tony
We did, Mark! We both enjoyed our visit and swapping wood. The Black Cherry will come, for sure! 😊
Tough piece. Good job Phil!
Thanks, Mike!
Beautiful surface finish
I'm glad you like that, Kevin!
I'm loving your stuff. Inspirational.
Glad to hear it, John, thanks! 😊

Oh wow Phil another of your amazing creations, no matter what the piece of wood looks like it always comes out looking like a million dollars. Fantastic.
Thank you very much, Kobie! 😊

Many thanks, Andy! 😊 Yeah, it's hard for sure!
Yeah you pulled it off again Phil very interesting piece and another wood I had never heard of.
So much wood, Lewis, so little time... Thanks for watching! 😊
Excellent result Phil

Nicely Done Phil!
Thank you, Steve!
Very nice job Mr. Phil
Thank you so much, Donald!
Very nice job Phil!👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you, Mike! Cheers!
It’s good to see that even expert turners have their work fall off the chuck, too. :P
Yeah, it happens to all of us now and then, I think. 😊
Very unusual and that's what makes it so great. Not another one like it on the planet. Well done!
Thank you, Ray! That's how I look at it, too! Unique. 😊
love the way you "talk" to the wood through your fingers and how it answers by turning out so beautifully
One with the wood, Marilyn, I'm glad you see that, thank you!
Great job 👍. I love what you do with the cracks and live edge work.
Glad you like them, Scott! Once you've turned a couple it's very difficult to go back to just round. At least, for me. 😊
Thank you Phill for sherring your work with us all.
My pleasure, Alan, thank YOU for watching! 😊
Love it. So much character!
I'm glad, Larry, thank you! 😊
Very unique awesome job Phil love it
Thank you, Mike!
Super nice job Phil!!!!
Thank you, Emmett!
I agree with Valerie that not everything needs to be perfectly round. You proved that with this piece. Nice job.
I'm glad you agree, Tom, thank you!
I really like that base!
That makes me happy, Jen, thank you! 😊
Wonderful Phil
😊
Great looking bowl. 👍
Thank you, Simon! 😊 Cheers!
Lovely bowl, Phil! Unorthodox, but it looks great and I really like it!
Yeah, it's different, Billy! Glad you like it, buddy, thank you!
A work of art! You always talk about not knowing what you are doing, but the beauty of what you make shows you really know what you think.
Thank you so much, Jo Ann! 😊
strange piece, but beautiful outcome in your hands!!!grtngs!
Thank you, Ben! 😊
I like it as much as you do. Thank you to Gary for sending and to you for sharing. Keep up the good work and see you soon.
Many thanks for your support, much appreciated! 😊
turned out beautifully!
Thank you, Kipra!
Phil nice job I really love that bowl
I'm so glad, Robert, thank you! 😊
I'm so glad I found this video. I have a piece of wood somewhat similar to what you started out with for this project and I had not decided what or even if I could do anything with it but now I know what I want to do. It will be a while though as I'm just getting started in turning and I know I need to get some more experience before trying this. That said, I sure do appreciate you narrating your lathe speed, tool use, and that you are wearing a face shield and dust mask when starting. Sometimes we need that reminder that safety equipment is not something to forget about. Take care and thanks for the education and entertainment.
😊
I love it 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Thanks, J'Lyssa! 😊
Great looking bowl Phil
Thank you, M V T!
Cool piece Phil 👍🇺🇸
Thank you, Cortland! 😊
I have been watching in bits and pieces for the last fourteen hours. I do not know about round and brown, but the bark is beautifully silky and satiny. Hum! Yum, yum? There comes Gary's notification.
Step away from KZhead, Khan! Go outside, smell a flower, breathe deep. We'll all be here waiting for you when you return. 😊 LOL!
Hey Phil maybe we could schedule a workshop with Phil here in Tennessee, a two day event. I have a very large shop that would accommodate many. It would take some planning but we could pull it off, something to think on. God bless
I'm honored you would even think like that. Thank you! Stay happy and healthy and enjoy that large shop! 😊
Phil, it’s adorable. I don’t know anyone who can turn everything you out your hands on and turns up to be a beautiful piece of art. Boy I have to beg to get some wood from a fallen tree. You lucky man, people get in line to offer you various types of wood. Stay safe Phil. Thank you for your video.
Thank you, Sylvie! 😊 You are right, of course. I have the best, most generous viewers on the planet! If not for them I would be turning only the cracked, bug infested wood that is common to my area. I'm truly grateful for the opportunity to turn such a great variety of wood.
Looks really cool Phil.
Thank you, Michael! 😊
Beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers! 😊
Hi phil hope your well looked hard work but worth it i looks great 👍
I am very well, Kirk, thank you! I hope you and yours are happy and healthy, too! 😊
Hey Phil. All I can say is Oddly Beautiful.
Works for me, Carl, thank you very much!
I was going to say that this was an unusual piece but then it occurred to me that you don’t do “usual” so that would be a silly thing to say. So I won’t. 😁 All kidding aside, that was a great video to watch, Phil. Very nice turning, buddy! Always enjoy watching you turn! 👏👏👏👍👍👍 Take care, .....Gord
Glad you enjoyed it, Gord! You are right, "usual" is much more difficult, for me. Heck, nature put all that effort into a piece of wood, might as well use it! Thanks for watching and for your great comment, Gord, I really appreciate it! 😊
Right on that's awesome
Thanks for the visit B W! 😊
Another beauty, Phil. You always manage to find the best in each piece of wood. It's always a pleasure to watch. Take care. Bill
Many thanks, Bill, thank you for watching! 😊
Very distinctive piece, unusual, irregular and unique. I really appreciated that you showed the difficulties you encountered Phil. We can all learn from understanding that it's not always plain sailing and that we learn more when we overcome difficulties. There is an honesty in the way that you record your work Phil, an openness which is very engaging. This particular video was very instructive for me.
I appreciate your kind comments, Stevan, thank you very much!
Love the unusual shape Phil! We have a couple Camellia bushes and they bloom when nothing else does so I hope I never have to cut them down. If I do, I'll look forward to making some 'unusual' bowls from the trunks. I enjoy all your vids!
Thank you, Gil! Yeah, if you've got some healthy ones I think the flowers make keeping them more important. 😊
Really like the shape great job
Glad you like it, Jack, thank you!
Thanks !!!!! Enjoyed "you" + your vocal interaction + workmanship !!!!! JESUS CHRIST IS LORD !!!! AMEN !!!!!!
So glad you enjoyed the video, thank you! 😊
Very nice bowl!
Thank you very much, Scott! 😊
Bonsoir Phil ! Jean-Luc
😊
Cool bowl, Phil!
Thanks for watching, Rick!
WOW Phil u do a fantastic job every time.
I'm glad you think so, Manjit! Thank you! 😊
If anybody can turn a difficult piece of wood it’s you. Very nice! 👍🏻 -Mike
Thank you, Mike!
Very nice indeed
Thank you kindly, Kandie!
Very interesting
Glad you think so! 😊
Hi Phil Strange, I turned a Kauri piece today with two chainsaw ends bark top using same worm screw mounting . Only tackled it after watching some of your other mountings/drilling out bark etc. Thanks again for sharing
Excellent, thank you, Mal! 😊
Really great stuff, once again, Phil. Turned out really great. I have to agree with Tuffy, "NEVER boring" only ever educational and certainly nail biting entertainment at times. Your intro on just where to place the piece reminds me of a David Ellsworth video in which he states how he never goes into a piece with a preconceived outcome, like you, he lets the piece guide him to the final end, you did exactly that with this wing.....STUNNING!!!
Wow, thank you so much, David, for your uplifting comment! 😊
Looks different but nice well done Phil you have patients of Johb another good video
I'm glad you think so, Paul! Thank you very much!
Looks awesome!
Thank you, Santo! 😊
That is so cool. Turned out beautifully. So glad it did not tip over. I am sure you had all of our positive energy regarding its stability. Thank you for sharing. I hit the like, suscribe and notify all. Stay safe and well. 😺❤😺
Wow, so kind of you, Joalla! Thank you very much! 😊 I will try to be worthy.
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop you already are : )
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Made me chuckle with your comment. That is a good thing. Life is kind of rough for me right now
Camellia...who knew! Boy this bowl sure turned out to be really pretty. Great work sir!! 👍
Thank you so much, Maurine! 😊
Hi Phil...I watched Gary's video turning the same stock and it was brutal! This is one of those projects that tests skills and endurance more than anything and you did a fine job. This would make a great "nut cracker" bowl...if you get my drift. Best to you and be healthy.
Haha! Thank you, Doc!
🙋♂️🏴 Hi Phil as I was watching this video I thought this piece was going to be awful but slowly you worked your magic and turned out another masterpiece, great work. One thing you never told us the football 🏈 score or who you where supporting. Thanks Phil.
Thank you, John! Seahawks and they lost! Can't remember the score, trying to put it out of my memory... 😊
You do awesome work I will share your video so if you see any comments from Harlingen or the RGV say hi for me thanks for keeping us entertained
Awesome thank you, Rene, I'll be on the lookout! 😊
Okay, i have watched alot of your videos and its amazing what you create. I like how you just put a piece on how ever you want to and out comes a master piece. Great job once again Phil 😁👍🏼👏
Thank you so much! I guess that's half the fun. Just get a hold on it and see what happens! 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop i like to do the same, let the wood dictate
Very nice
😊
Well Phil, I honestly didn't think that I was going to like this one. But then you put your magic touch on it. I sure am glad I watched to the end. Another beautiful piece! Be safe and stay healthy my friend!
Thanks for sticking it out, David. I'm glad you like it, thank you! 😊
Another masterpiece, Phil! Thanks!
My pleasure, Greg, thanks for watching! 😊
Another fabulous piece from fabulous Phil. This a fantastic shaped piece my friend. SO glad that you work so closely WITH your wood & didn't try & make it round on the bandsaw. At least with only one wing on the bowl you know it cannot 'fly away' from you, even though it did try soon after you started to work on the top of the bowl but it did not get very far. I love the terrific view from the side rotation of the bowl where the fabulous edge profile undulates beautifully. Love the grain & the finish. One could not want for a better result from this unusually shaped piece of Camellia. An enjoyable relaxing half hour of entertainment. Thanks for sharing this with us Phil. Cheers, from Don of South Aust.
Thank you, Don! I guess it's your Spring time down there, right? All that nature just coming alive. Enjoy!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Yes it is our Spring now Phil & we have a serious bushfire alert in our state today (10/11/20). Things are blooming riht now & I see many pieces of dead trees that I look at & wonder what a great time you would have with them & Gary (Papa) too. Cheers, Don (PS. Don't forget to look for Silver & White pens for marking you dark wood turnings.)
The beginning is the challenge , but never for Phil , then it goes straight to the end , camellia looks like holly , milky , but with no cracks , one more piece of art...
Thank you so much, Youenn! 😊
I was not sure how it was going to turn out. I will say it turned out vary nice
Thank you, Don, I'm glad you like it! 😊
Now THAT is a very unique and special project. Thanks for showing us a different kind of piece. You really help us turners to up our game. Be well Sir.
So nice of you, Kelly, thank you! 😊
I kept wanting you to take about an inch off that wing. Just to round that corner off. But I think I'm glad you didn't listen to me. I think it looks a bit like a spaceship that lost a wing. It is quite pretty.
😊
Hi Phil, That may have been a bit of a fight but you won every single round apart from one when it went for a quick flight. LOL. I have never seen anything come off your lathe before. That is an amazing looking bowl Phil and the Howards really made the bark and grain come to life. Great work as always Phil. Take care buddy. Cheers, Huw
Haha, you've just forgotten, Huw. Stuff does occasionally go flying in my shop! I'm glad you like this one, thank you so much for taking your time to watch, my friend! 😊
The bowl looks like a convertible flying saucer, a George Jetson doll would fit right in! Gluing in stainless steel grooved dowels in the base can balance the bowl and be hidden by plugs.
Vroooom! LOL! Thanks for the tip, Charlie! I'm glad I didn't have to use it on this piece.
You said you were scared to death, me too. I'm surprised you have all your fingers unharmed. It was an interesting bowl and as beautiful as your other works, it is impossible to choose a favorite even if I have looked 2-3 times at some of your works. Carsten Sweden
You are just too kind, Carsten! 😊 Thank you so much for your support!
Hello sir, I'm 45yrs old and love woodworking. My grandfather was born in 1918 and lived to be 91. He taught me everything he knew about woodworking and I'm so thankful for it. I just found your channel and I think it's great! I've seen many wood turning channels, but never subscribed to any except for yours. There's something about you that reminds me of my grandfather, not that your old or anything, haha. It's the way you talk. I have always wanted a lathe, but don't see me getting one. At least I can watch you! Doing a great job sir.
Thank you, Scotty! I was a woodworker for 50 years before I retired and decided to become a turner. I don't recommend it for you. It's far too much fun and your life will change and if you are anything like me, you will miss woodworking a lot! Thank you so much for subscribing, I will try to be worthy. 😊
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop I really enjoyed your reply, thank you! I have some sycamore limbs that my grandfather had cut up for firewood that are about 4-6 in in diameter. I wanted to save anything that he had a hand in, I loved him more than anything else. Anyways, I have had these logs since 2009 when he passed. Do you think one of these could be turned into some type bowl or something? I used some 1 in diameter limbs he had cut up to make checker board pieces for a board I made and gave to my grandmother after he passed away. She passed away a few months ago at 99. Thank you for getting back to me sir. Scotty Johnson
@@scotty2735 Sure, a small bowl could be made from limbs that size. Or maybe a spindle turning like a vase or candle holder, etc.
I'm 76 years old. I learned basic wood turning at school, when I was 12-13, but non after that until recently, so I'm learning all over again. I bought the cheapest lathe I could find a few years ago, a chuck, and a cheap set of turning chisels, and, as you can see above still making mistakes. (Cost me about £500, but they are a lot cheaper in the USA, have a look on Amazon. com for a start, and then elsewhere for better prices. Tools and chucks are cheaper on AliExpress.) I've since added a couple of parting tools, 1/4 & 1/8''. _One piece of advice; if you want to do it, do it!_ There's no reason not to. There's more than enough instruction, (free on YT), to get you started. One tip, instead of using bowl gouges, start by using scrapers, they are a lot more forgiving, and are far less likely to dig in and snatch! I use a 1/2 round, and a skewed scraper for most of my work, on the outside and inside of bowls, and just occasionally use a bowl gouge for deep bowl work, inside the bowl. It works for me. My first 'commission' was to make a wooden 'foot' for an antique Napoleon Wine glass. My price? a bottle of Scotch!😊 .
As usual your live edge work is great. Everything is one of a kind, very unique. I think it’s great you have so many friends that send you all the various woods you show on your videos. I’m looking into getting a large round scraper like you have, can you please share the size and maker. Thanks for the fun videos.
Thank you, Michael! I have the best, most generous viewers! My scraper is a Benjamin's Best. It's a 1 1/2" round nose that I reground to negative rake. 36° top and bottom.
Nice job my man .I think is really cool.good job.
I'm glad you like it, E T, thank you!
@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop what part of the country are you in.i wish you were in michigan. I need a helper.
@@exotictones1054 The state of Washington.
Nice work Phil. Was impressed when you were hollowing with the center support in with the amount of wood you were able to take out pushing that tool in wide open. Shows a really good touch, but you had me worried. Also great that it didn't fall over like Artie Johnson when you were done. Keep 'em coming!
Thank you, Chris! Man, I hated pushing that gouge in wide open like that, Chris! Just didn't see any other way to proceed, but it was scary! 😊
Another beautiful piece!👏🏻👏🏻👍❤️
Thank you, Wanda! 😊
