A fun little turning, except for my major mistake, that I thought we could play a game with. Can you guess what it is, without looking at the ending? C'mon, give it a try and let me know how you did!

  • I didn't even have an intelligent guess on that one. I read the title of the video and it opened up to that rectangular block chucked up. I took one look and said to myself, he's turning soapstone. Not even the right sport let alone the same ball park. But a fascinating gift idea for my wife. If I can't trade her off I better try to keep her happy. She's got our whole house decorated with antiques. I'm the centerpiece in the living room. Thanks Phil. Pete Wells

  • After I saw the metal version of the tooth pick holder it came to me. The soda shop in my home town when I was growing up had the bigger version of this,It was the straw dispenser. How cool someone thought to make it smaller for tooth picks. Yours is beautiful as always. I do like the nob being a darker color .

  • As Always, I loved this. Why? Because it's made of WOOD. The knob, which you didn't like, to me is the finishing touch. Your "mistakes" just made the whole unit beautiful. I hadn't the faintest idea what you had in mind so I didn't skip to the end which would have spoiled seeing the development. Wonderful. And, As Always, I'll buy it!

  • Yeah it sure is COOL. Good recovery with the 5/8 hole too Phil. Just a tip on knobs. I bought two lengths of PVC rod. 1" and 1/2" diameter for making these sorts of knobs. It fits in the chuck easy and turns OK. You have to finish it with a microcrystaline paste to get rid of the tool marks. It comes in all colours but I settled on black and so I get real ebony looking knobs.

I was worried about 3/8 being too big for any kit I had ever seen, but somewhere around 20 minutes in I changed to a toothpick dispenser. I make a lot of salt and pepper shakers using cut-offs, I think I will add a toothpick dispenser to the set and see what people think.

  • Interesting project. I have one improvement suggestion. I would add a kerf cut to the top and tube. When twisted a single toothpick would fall into the kerf, so when you lowered the top that single toothpick would stay in place. That way when it is closed back up you would be able to grab the espoused toothpick. The way it is you almost need 3 hands to be able to get a toothpick.

    @Drirot@Drirot8 ай бұрын
    • You could do that. 😊 I was holding it, that's what makes it look difficult. When it's just sitting on a shelf, you just pick up the lid with one hand and take your toothpick with the other. Easy-peasy!

  • Phil, After suffering my way to the end, I feel obliged to make some comments. For an artist in wood turning, you remind me of a rare breed of musicians who can stand on stage and fool around like a novice just learning to play the instrument. To be able to do this requires several skills, which I am sure you can work out. I like your subtle humour, your obvious skill on the wood lathe, your artistic eye, and your ability to keep one engaged until the end of the project. Your video work is perfect, well framed, detailed and properly illuminated. I applaud your lack of background music, a feature that spoils so many presentations by others.. You are not escaping another comment, your use of some weird system of measurements !! I realise that you guys like to drive on the wrong side of the road, but imperial measurements!!!. Joking aside, I learn something from all your presentations. I am fortunate to have a few skills of my own, which makes me a little difficult to please and to get and maintain my attention. Thank you for sharing your presentations, from Tasmania- down under, Happy turning through 2020- and beyond. 👍😁🎹📷🎷☁️🔬🎼🪐🔭🇦🇺 ’

  • HI Phil Nice toothpick holder, and I knew what you were making almost from the start having made probably 50 or more over the last 8-9 years or so after finding a pattern in Wood magazine! I found your site through Gord Rock earlier this year and have been enjoying your many videos, thanks for all of your numerous tips and ideas! By the way I live in Canada and Gord is a couple of hours drive away from me! Cheers Al

    • Thank you very much, Al! Sorry I couldn't stump you on this one. I'd never seen a pattern for these, that's interesting! I appreciate you taking your time to watch and for your great comment!

  • That really is beautiful wood and you did a really nice job creating that toothpick holder. I have seen these before but forgot about it so you have me guessing right to the end. I think the reason I put it out of my mind was because of the mess if somebody pulled the thing all the way out while it was full of toothpicks. :)

    @terry3974@terry39742 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you very much, Terry! Yeah, I warn people before they pull it all the way out. No need to, really, just a couple inches gets you a toothpick. 😊

      @PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop2 жыл бұрын
    • Easy fix for that: cut a thin ring that fits tightly to the top of the inside cavity and glue it in there. You'd have to put it in between the cap and the basket when you assemble that, but it'd keep the basket from coming all the way out.

  • Love it! And the knob is perfect. I really like the simple design and the color contrast. Great job! I'm in the market for a lathe... I've been working with wood my whole life but have never owned a lathe. Out of all the turners I've watched, I really enjoy your videos the best. Maybe it's the humility and honesty you have. At any rate, keep up the awesome work! And thanks for sharing.

    • I'm really glad you like it, Caleb. Be careful on getting a lathe. I too, have been a woodworker my whole life. But, when I retired and started watching turning videos, my life changed. I still have a shop full of great tools, but I find I only do woodturning, now, and have pretty much stopped woodworking. I kinda miss it! But, I really enjoy turning so I guess that's me for the foreseeable future. Thank you for another great comment and taking your time to watch! Phil

    • @@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop well Phil it's a happiness trade off. However only continue turning if it continues making you happy. I've learned that lesson. I don't do anything that doesn't bring happiness to myself or others any longer. Again thanks buddy for the comment and taking the time to read them all. Keep up the videos even if they aren't turning vids. 👍

  • Yours is way cooler than the pressed metal one. Ive seen those at little dive dinners before, but your is so much cooler. Liked how you talked us through your thought process. Always really enjoyable to watch you work. Had to say when you had it on the lathe spindle orientated i was like Hey thats new and different ! I love your videos Phil. Great idea. • Good Afternoon , Phil Good Secret , but I had made one 10 years ago ! By another Turner whom I have forgotten his name, Th e only difference was that there was two different I.D. Sizes , which kept the inside plate from coming out all of the way, but it is still easy to remove a toothpick ! But I do believe that you made a very nice one also ! Take Care and Be Safe ! Oh a little P.S. I have the same dust collected system you have , mine is the high tech one also !
