  • I always thought that was the point. he was letting Nero take the reins on this he always knew he could just clean up the mess if it ever got out of hand. he made it obvious multiple times throughout the game that he had everything under control. I think he was just testing Nero the entire game to see what his potential was. Even from the very opening credits when we first saw him staring at Nero from the top the buildings.

    • Honestly I really couldn't care less about what happened to the civilians, I was a lot more invested in seeing what happens with Nero and how he would overcome Sanctus to save Kyrie and develop his demonic powers so having Dante around doing his thing and watching over and testing Nero was okay in my opinion.

    • I mean, that's the POINT, yes, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it has merit. I don't agree with much on the video because when I played as Nero I felt that determined frustration when I lost that Dante would just come in and kick ass, that it wasn't me winning in DMC3 it was Dante. So I got better to both feel good about Nero's closure and feel deserving of playing AS Dante. That said, saying that that's the point is a non-argument and doesn't really strengthen your point.

      @BattlegroundsAlpha@BattlegroundsAlpha4 жыл бұрын
    • Exactly! And to add to your comment, this turned out to be a very smart way to introduce a new protagonist imo. By having Dante hold back and allow Nero to take the scene the developers made the players curious about Nero and his role in the story, whithout "disrespecting" or "replacing" the previous protagonist. Just take a look at other games where developers basically go "We have a new protag and they're way better than the previous one and you're all going to love them" and check the reaction of the fans, and you'll be able to tell why Capcom decided to keep Dante around.

  • I think it's good to see Dante that overpowered, at least once. Because now, when we see him get serious, or worn down, the villain is immediately more of a threat because weve seen him be massively op thanks to 4. Even without 5 and the concept I just explained, 4 Dante seems like he's testing Nero the whole game, it's not about the villain being a threat, it's testing Nero to see if he can do it. If he can't do it, Dante will step in, he's Nero's backup just in case.

  • DMC4 Dante is the brother we ask to beat a hard boss when we were too young to deal. I enjoy a lot his goofiness going through the fourth instalment as his "journey" had happened in DMC3 and DMC4 is Nero time to shine.

  • Dante's overwhelming strength is the entire point of the narrative. The focus is on Nero's rise to power, and they needed a villain side that wasn't that strong so Nero could actually climb without getting destroyed. None of the enemies were on par with Mundus because of that, and so Dante would never have an issue with any of them. Why would he? Even the Savior was a knockoff of Mundus that was nowhere close in strength. Of course, in DMC V he has trouble because his foe is his own brother, who is aiming to surpass Mundus. That's why it's not easy for him then.

  • I was okay with Dante being OP in DMC4, I always wanted to know what an easy job was like for Dante at the time. I did like the contrast between Dante and Nero's story. Nero is going through a massive shift in his life while it's just Tuesday for Dante. I do wish that the games would show us more demon hunters though.

    • @Awakened Virtue I've always seen Dante effortlessly offing bosses in afterfight cutscenes as him just wearing them out during the fight to a point where he can mockingly make an easy kill to rub his victory in, rather than him being OP enough, that he could have literally finished the fight with that one attack from the get go if he wanted to. Bossfights have to still have happened afterall and I find the idea that we get to play as Dante at his actual full power, but have to mechanically master the game inorder to match his level of skill and confidence that gets depicted in the cutscenes way more fun and compelling, than us having to play a version of him, that is just acting weaker for the hell of it.

  • In terms of narrative, DMC4 has similar themes with the anime One Punch Man. There's this overpowerd guy Dante/Saitama running around and we know that he can beat up the boss without breaking a sweat. But that isn't where the conflict of the narrative lies; rather, it's how Nero/Genos overcome their limits and resolve the conflict through their own efforts. Nero was the main character here and the tension was in his character development and his relationship with the Order. The focus wasn't on the doom and gloom 'end-of-the-world' threat like 1, 2, 3 or 5. Instead, it followed a smaller scale. Relatively speaking. The narrative has never been a strong point of the DMC series.

    @ruse4402@ruse44024 жыл бұрын
    • Still Saitama at least has a struggle with _having no struggle_ , but Dante never really has any intrinsic or explicit problems in the plot which makes his plot uninteresting to follow.

  • I really liked Dante aesthetically in DMC4 and I agree with you that he felt way too strong. I did enjoy it however, and I really liked how they made it so that the one in position to defeat Sanctus was Nero, not Dante, because otherwise as you say, it would have been too easy. An overpowered hero can't really do anything if he's on the bench after all. Overall I do agree with you, running through the whole place again felt more like a chore than anything even though Dante's cutscenes were all fun. I think his only weakness was that unlike Superman he can't really move at the speed of light, so he's at least stuck dealing with one thing at a time...? If that's really anything given how fast he can blaze through everything if he really, really wanted to.

    • DMC1 and DMC2 Dante weren't manchildren. This is backed up by the fact that the director's for those games weren't the same as 3, 4 and 5 which featured the "wacky woohoo pizza" guy. DMC1 Dante is based on Cobra, so he's naturally a goofball but he was not a manchild and who gets talked down on by other characters like a child.

      @blackout1524@blackout15244 жыл бұрын
    • @@blackout1524 In DMC2 he was a brooding edgelord that nobody liked who fliped coins in order to make his decisions like he was Two-Face. Granted, he was less goofy in DMC1, but still had extremely corny lines and silly moments. That was amplified in later games, but that doesn't mean that he was a complete manchild. In fact, I would argue that at the end of DMC3, he was a lot more serious than he was in the majority of DMC1. This notion that he wasn't serious or have serious moments at all in later games and that he got talked down on by other characters is extremely silly.

      @vlad4o813@vlad4o8134 жыл бұрын
  • Yes he is OP in 4 and he is supposed to be this way. After everything he went through its only natural, its well deserved. Are you really would prefer him to be threatened by Santa Pope and some entry level human-devil hybrids, after he dealt with Vergil, Arkham, Mundus and shit tonn of real deal demons. I dont think so, sir. In the first cutscene when Nero runs to Kyries choir expose, if you pay attention, Dante spies on Nero. He already suspects something fishy about this kid, and every other time they meet he is getting more clues to confirm his idias. Yes Dante could wipe floor with anything and everything Nero faces in fourth game. But he is there to see Vergil legacy live through, to help and guide Nero, to help him develop in someone who is worthy to take Yamato. To become family if you will. He steps in only if and when its necessary. The key moment is when Dante bursts Saviour through with Yamato to gave Nero something he needs (not the sword, perspective and acceptence of himself). I dont know dude, i kinda get where you coming from but disagree completle. When Trish asks him what if the Kid fails he jokes that then he would clean this mess etc. Im no wordsmith and my points may be all over the place but i hope you'll get what im sayin. Peace! P.S. There is REALLY no time to give common folk more screen time than the games already gave them. For real. We get it, thats just not the focus of the story and if it were that would be hell of a different kind of game.

  • As another commenter pointed out, I think that was the point. DMC4 was basically a passing the torch story and Dante acted like a mentor to Nero, working in the background and basically cleaning up after him and the Order of the Sword. There's the reason why Nero is the one who has all the heavy and dramatic moments, and why he is the one to take down Sanctus and not Dante. It's because DMC4 isn't Dante's story, but Nero's.

  • (English is not my first language, so bear with me) One thing that I dislike about Dante in DMC 4 AND 5 is that he's basically joking every single time. I know, and I like, that they gave him more seriousness in 5, but still there's some times (like V's pets fading away scene) that he joked about something that was serious. 4 was even worse when Credo died, mainly because I still think Credo is the best character of the game (I didn't like Nero that much because of the love thing that felt so tedious to me, which 5 fixes by removing it and instead give him the powerlessness thing), and Dante literally made a joke 2 seconds after that. Now, it might not be that bad if DMC1 Dante was not a thing, but he is. Personally, I still think that DMC1 Dante is the best Dante because he was a joking guy WHILE also being serious when he was meant to be. Remember how I complained about Dante joking when Credo or V's pet died? The reason for this is because when he saw Griffon (How ironical) getting killed by Mundus after being defeated, Dante felt bad about it, and he even got more reasons to fight Mundus; he felt sorry about someone that just a few minutes ago he was fighting as an enemy. That's about it, I'd like to read what you think about this, about Dante throughout the DMC series and my mistakes typing all of this.

  • First let me say ...YES ...no matter how much i like this game i complete see your points and i find them very correct....dante being so OP in dmc4 is indeed a problem in the narrative because you feel nothing will happen that he doesn't allow it as a consequence when we get control of him .. NOW time for the fanboy inside of me to tell a dmc4 half point on story ...enjoy :) what i would change ??.....i wouldn't have destroyed the hell gates yet because if you destroy one of them or all of them they will unleash the massive hell gate under the city immediately (generic i know but it works here) ....nero would have let them be by not caring, as he did (even when he just didn't know) and dante would let the be because he somehow realized this ...,and he find it out for the sake of convenience very early BEFORE we get control of him...dante may not show it emotionally but he cares about innocent lost of life so he wouldn't have destroyed them even if what he found out was only a chance of happening while full knowing it will bite him in the ass later ..and it does....we get control of him and have to deal with this this massive problem the left a gaping hole/trail all the way to the city that only dante is strong enough to deal with, with insane amount of enemies and boss-rushes all over the place making use of his OP state ...we do SOME backtracking but the majority of dante's gameplay is feverish fights with ZERO puzzles at new locations all the way back to the savior....while every hell gate keep bringing demons even after dante leaves that location... this leaves nero to deal with the main plot stuff and dante's only contribution to it is after killing agnus breaking in the sword back to nero without fighting it at all not only because of the possible collateral damage but because this hit nero personally...and leaving nero to deal with the statue bides time for trish.....the dante vs statue fight is pretty much completely removed and dante jumps away back to the city to keep killing demons there and all the hudreds incoming ones from the entire land (again using his OP state) until nero is done with the pope ...when the pope and the demonic connection of him, the statue and the hellgates is severed ....trish by then has fully evacuated the city,,,,,,.. dante goes demon form and wrecks masses of demons like a motherfucker..,,,nero lands on the ground with Kyrie and dante takes the sword from nero and jumps way up to cut to dust the hallgates from a distance alongside several big demons (also demonstrating the op state of yamato)....when he lands to the surprise of nero, dante gives yamato back to nero and leaves as he did leaving the few minor demon stragglers for nero's ending credit cutscene even if i demoted dante to a crowed control side character since this is a nero story i tried to keep my fanboysm to the higher levels that i have dante xD allowing him to show off at all points with situations that only he could deal with making full use his "god mode" status with massive numbers of enemies and MANY (mini) boss fights (like the mode that i dont remember the name right now there was on pc that filled the stages with insane number of demons) and pretty much being a decisive factor in the plot line he barely was in.....nero may have been in the spotlight by ending the pope and the statue but everything still stands in the land and city because of dante Hope you enjoyed it ..because i did enjoy writing it :)

    • I think your idea to have Dante deal with the massive horde of demons makes sense. Nero is shown to be very good at dealing with demons, but he's never really had to deal with a massive swarm of them before all on his own, he's worked with the Order for a long time, as hinted by his ring bearing their crest as well as the fact he has one of their swords (Red Queen, though of course modified to suit him better) But Dante is exceedingly experienced in dealing with demons, he's had 3 whole adventures to deal with demons, so he would have the experience needed as well as backup from both Trish helping to clear civilians and Lady who even in gameplay (Special edition) is shown to have a knack for dealing with large numbers of enemies at once. On a side note, I think maybe taking care of the massive Hellgate (which could appear due to Yamato being used as was intended in plot) might be best as a first step for Dante, the smaller ones could still be open letting the legions pour out, but the massive Hellgate in the center of the city could be used as a good point to start Dante's final stretch of gameplay while Nero's final stretch of the gameplay could involve his making his way towards that stage where we fought against the Savior.

  • I completely agree. Dante WAS a blast and a joy to play, as well as funny to watch, but it did stain the impact when you realize that he could've handled all of this by himself and no casualties(if any) or stress would be a factor. Thank god they fixed him in 5, but then again, the limits and threats really had to be pushed... Hi Virgil.

  • If you look at dmc 4 as dante testing nero after their first encounter, it makes bit more sence. At that point dante is the overcomplicated opverpowered mentor, just seeing if Nero, his new unknowing deciple he picked up can get through this, what has now devolved into a "training mission".

  • Narratively I think it makes perfect sense, before this game, Dante killed Mundus, the big bad, the king of hell, where else is he to go?, this is why Urizen was such a big deal he'd been practically invincible for decades. The whole game was more him testing Nero and while I think that works, it does of course impact his character negatively in some aspects like you said, though while he was mostly goofing around they did manage to put in at-least a bit of subtlety in his exchanges with Nero. Overall the game itself was not about him or his journey unlike in 3,1 or 5 (where all the characters shared the stage almost evenly), it was about Nero and his contribution was watching him to see if he'd be worthy to take on the mantle, it's interesting to think that Dante did seem to be feeling his age catching up to him and knew the world needed someone like him after he is gone. So overall while some development for him was put to the wayside, I think it's a fine tradeoff and it was nice to see him just having a good time and goofing off, aware that nothing in that game could truly beat him. But yes, by god did we need a better second half for him gameplay wise.

  • The way I always saw it was that Dante would have had the job done quicker had he not met Nero. Not to say Nero posed a physical threat to him but more he wanted to see what Nero could do, after all he figured out that Nero was Vergil's kid. So maybe he just wanted to make sure he was on the level and not a power crazed maniac like his father. So in summary Dante probably would have wiped the Order off the map in about two seconds had he not met Nero in the church. Which I actually like sometimes Superman just needs to be Superman while letting the other heroes do the hero thing.

  • I mean I probably wouldn't have been interested in DMC4 if Dante wasn't in the game so I guess they caught me with that. Most of my playtime is replaying Dante missions as well, styling with crazy combos. Nero was serviceable but I never really liked him much, probably because I inherently felt like they were trying their hardest to throw Dante away in favor of him. Likely because of the reasons you illustrated about Dante being much too powerful for a proper narrative after DMC2 without making all sequels prequels in truth. I would've been fine with that though considering how much I enjoy Dante as a character and mechanically. Unfortunately it seems after DMC5 this is Nero's franchise now.

  • Originally Dante was supposed to have his own campaign where he would go to hell to find Vergil. That's why the weapons he has in dmc 4 have different names than the bosses he defeated and one of the them is even called Lucifer. Nero was also supposed to have more missions but since the developers didn't have enough time they shortened Nero's campaign and added Dante in it. Which why he does nothing for the most part, he wasn't supposed to be there

  • The classic series stumbled with Dante post DMC1. He achieved his life's goal so the series didn't know what to do with him. DMC3 revitalized him but it made his past more interesting than his present. 5 solves it by bringing Vergil back but that's a half measure. 4 would have been better off being more like RE6. It had seperate campaigns with each character having their own conflicts etc. But alas DMC4 suffered from budget cuts so it wasn't meant to be.

  • I can't say if its an issue or something good. Between 3 and 1, Dante completed his story arc, he surpassed (at the time) his brother and Sparda. He had no where to go character development-wise But I do appreciate how strong he was shown to be. He did not even have to go to devil trigger to take care of bosses in cutscenes. I do understand how him being there takes tension out of the story though.

  • I wouldn't change him one bit, Dante served as some sort of mentor figure to Nero, that's Nero's game first and foremost and he knows it, Dante is just casually going along for the ride. To Nero everything is a challenge, to Dante is just a little playground, oportunity for a fun time. Having Dante do anything more than that would undermine Nero's journey. DMC5 also follows this somewhat closely, Dante gets beaten at the begining of the game only to wake up some time later, gets SDT and never has any trouble again, the only person that is somehow able to match him in power is resurrected Vergil, and maybe full DT'd Nero.

  • Granted, this is coming from someone who hasn't played DMC4 and has only played a little bit of 1, 5 and the reboot. I think the issue is that DMC4 is Nero's story, not Dante's. We're invested with Nero as this is a powerful moment of his life, but it's a mere Tuesday in Dante's. Great to still see him, but being able to control him when it's not his story, his battle? That might be the issue where you have to be in the mood to see a favorite OP character to beat those that are clearly lesser in both power and charisma. I say this as it's a line I have to be aware of with one of my series I'm making where my Psionic character can't die, that she goes to other realities to ease her boredom so that the thought of outliving her family and her descendants doesn't weigh her down. There are cool moments to write about for sure, but the stakes are gone when the character doesn't need to struggle which is why I plan to write more from the bad guy's perspective so now it becomes more suspenseful of how long they can last against overwhelming odds. But eh, that's just my two cents on the topic. I can be wrong. Can't wait for Vergil!
