Hi Casey! Thank you for creating this masterpiece for us to enjoy! You rock!
The rock is here
The man himself is here
The Orpheus of himself is here...
God came down and said:
The reason the song from 12:45 and out feels so raw compared to the rest of the song is because when writing this song, they told Casey the song only had to be about 7 minutes or so (I don't remember exactly what they said specifically, all I remember was that he was allowed to end the song at that point), but because he assumed this would be his last time making music for DMC, he decided to go all out for the ending, adding an extra 2 or so minutes of pure, raw emotion as a love letter to the DMC franchise
That's just awesome, shows they had an absolute blast working on it
That's right. The music doesnt play for long ingame but with all the transitions and dynamism, they need to be quite long. So they would need about 7 minutes. Then Casey took it to the next level! They responded by having it be the final boss music in the Vergil DLC.
@@tipsy634 apart of me wishes they made it the theme when you fight him as Dante, but oh well, still cool

Fun fact, Casey Edwards was told he couldn't use guitars at all, only for the chorus toward the end. So he had to improvise and use synthesizers to make the heavy parts and everything before. Another fun fact too, Casey Edwards studied under Mick Gordon, the composer of the DOOM Soundtrack for the modern games. Which is why it has a similar feel. Oh and Bury the Light shares chord progression with Devil Trigger which is top notch.
well he did make devil trigger so that isn't surprising he knows it, didn't know he trained under Mick, that makes so much sense.
This isnt true. There are plenty of guitars before the final chorus, especially in the bass and faint countermelody.
go watch casey's interview with alex moukala he say that he was Explicitly told no guitar out side that part, so no he isn't using guitars but a bass instead.@@winn3975
@@winn3975wrong. Casey was specifically told by Capcom to not include any guitar instruments till the end of the song. Which is where the solo starts, at the end.
As Mick Gordon said in his GDC talk, "Change the process, change the outcome."
I was listening to this in the background and didn't think twice when I heard the violin. I assumed it was part of the original track. 🤯 I hope some composers see these reactions and get the idea to invite you to add to their productions!
Hahaha! Thank you RG, I would never say no to such opportunities.
Right? Sounds like an unheard or cut "part 2" to the theme
some of them knew about the violin was Alex Moukala Music

Casey didn't have to go this hard, he was only required to make a song for Vergil a couple of minutes and fairly basic. Casey was all like: "Hold my beer."
He had to go hard, because he says in one of his video that capcom has a track record of giving chances to new music talents in each newer games. He thought this might be his last project with them, and thus, he poored his heart and soul on this one.
also, didn't Capcom give him incredibly specific instructions for bury the light?
He was motivated.
@@DonquaviusJDHigglebottomnope
@@greenhydra10 Casey: now I'm feeling motivated.
I've never played DMC, but I heard this song in a meme and fell in love with it from the first seconds. It's a rare masterpiece. Even without knowing the character, you feel his personality through the music. This is art.
You missing out.
Currently going through my first playthrough@@damarvelousone
It's even better when you're playing. DMC 5 has a system where the music changes dynamically with your style rating (goes up when you do cool stuff, goes down when you make mistakes), at the highest rating it switches to the chorus.
@@TheChaosCorvid, wow that's interesting 🤔
Dude... I started playing dmc beacuse of the memes
Ah, Vergil. The final boss that when playable doesn't become some weaker character. I have never seen anyone talk more about the singer of the song or the song's composer. They're both respected very equally and I love that. Victor Borba and Casey Edwards are absolute kings in the videogame music community.
Borba*
@@V-XENO i got genuinely no idea how i spelt it that way. that misspelling wasn’t in my memory at all, thanks man.
Okay, that was one of the the best Bury The Light reactions I've ever seen. I recommend you to listen other Devil May Cry music like "Devils Never Cry","Taste The Blood", "Shall Never Surrender" and other.
divine hate too
@@KuromiScarlet5030 it's probably a Devil's Never Cry
And also "Subhuman", " Devil's trigger" and "Crimson clouds"!
The wild thing is that up to 12:45, it's all synth. The Devs told the music writers not to have guitars. That's why the last part is so raw, he added electric guitar as a personal omage. Vergil is one of his favourite characters ever and you can feel it. The passion slaps so god damn hard.
I dunno why people misconstrue this point so often. there's still electric guitar in the chorus, and there's acoustic guitars during the verses. the restriction was no electric guitars outside of the chorus, and they later made the exception for the ending section.
@@andylawlzz Wonder why publishers feel the need to put such pointless restrictions on these creative geniuses
God, the violin 18:33 onwards was incredible! Great playing, as always. I’ve seen a few comments suggesting the Metal Gear: Rising OST, and i couldn’t agree more, it’s filled with intense bangers. “A Stanger I Remain”, “Stains Of Time”, “Red Sun”, “The Only Thing I Know For Real”, “Collective Consciousness”, “It Has To Be This Way” and “The Hot Wind Blowing” are my for sure top picks.
I second this. All of these songs, hell, the entire OST from MGRR is incredible
Wanted to write about Rising, but here it is already.
*Rules of nature*: guess I’ll go fuxk myself then 😃
I agree 100%. Please do this String Player Gamer!
RULES OF NATURE
Fun fact: the BURY THE LIGHT DEEP WITHIN SEGMENT is reminisant of the chorus of Devil Trigger to refrence the fact Vergil is Nero's father. Not sure if you noticed
This song is so good bro. especially at the part where the singer says "BURY THE LIGHT DEEP WITHIN" Ohh baby! that's gonna make me go to heaven
That introduction was INSANE! I was very impressed by the sudden switches from grungy and crunchy to sweet and gentle without sounding out of place. The first big vocal entrance made my jaw freaking DROP! As someone who loves melodies, I appreciate a simple percussion that can drive the rhythm/enhance the music without sounding boring. The meter changes, jumps, and key changes are all EPIC and really make this song so unique! Okay 12:44 absolutely blew my mind!! I hadn't thought of how space in a melody can make it more musical. Then again, music tells a story and who makes stories? Humans. And what do humans do? Breathe. So it checks out! This is definitely the type of music I LOVE to listen to when I need high energy that's also "focused".
INSANITY indeed! Glad you enjoyed the video Sploon!
This is the theme… OF A PLAYABLE CHARACTER
@@TheGremlinGhostno Bro its the theme of the final boss of the game
@@DevilTheDani it literally isn’t. It only plays when you are playing as Vergil. Not when you are fighting him

Yes, it has a very Evanescence meets Breaking Benjamin feel to it while pushing it through a modern Doom filter. Absolutely amazing song!
I dream we can see Victor borba singing bury the light live ❤
@@leserbeacerbe6910now that would be incredible
that was a good way to describe it
As someone who knows nothing technical about music its so great to hear someone who is knowledgeable about those things explain exactly why we intuitively know this song is such a masterpiece
Another yet great reaction and a very insane violin cover man, keep it up. THAT VIOLIN SOLO WAS FIRE THOUGH 🎻 🤘🔥
Appreciate it!!
This honestly is my favorite song of all time. Full stop, no bs. The mood, the story it tells, the energy it provides at diffrent parts makes you FEEL like you're listening to boss music, and this is just what Virgil has regularly in DMC5 and DMC5:SE. The gameplay alone hit the vibe of "you're playing as a boss character, now enjoy" this soundtrack makes you go, "I am vergil here, so i gotta beat em with style but efficiency" and no mater who i listen to with it, wether it be a reactor, a cover or someone cutting into the details of the song and giving details of what it does, how it does it and how they are applied, i always learn something with this amazing ass song. Definitely enjoyed this reaction and discussion on Bury the Light SPG. Glad you got to listen to this.
When most people think of Casey Edwards, they think of either this or Devil Trigger, 2 pieces that really show off his masterwork of songwriting. Though i will say, if you love his stuff, theres 1 track many will never have heard, as its from another Capcom game that so many neglected to give a real chance; Exoprimal. He composed the credits theme to that, called Exohuman
He also did another song with Victor Borba after this called Vacant Surrender. He released it as a standalone single.
@@phootaphan9166 it is like lite bury the light. Amazing song but nowhere close to Bury rhe light
Wait he did shit for exoprimal? That’s crazy that game was actually pretty good
15:17 I've never heard anyone explain musicality like this before and it suddenly clicked. But your performance near the end really drove the point home, it was just that good; made my heart tingle.
3:30 I love how everyone absolutely loves the tone change here
In a lot of games, a song like this would be a bit much. In the DMC series though? Fits right in. Adding a violin to it just makes it better!
Also helps that it belongs to the most over the top "cool" character in the series. On paper it seems edgy as hell, but it just works.
The thing about dmc 5 soundtrack is that it progresses based on your style rank. For example this song plays build up (that is not in the version you are listening to) on A rank and then chorus variation on S rank and it's so good
But Vergil can skip from no style to SSS in a span of 3 seconds, so you had to slow yourself down just to listen to it properly~
I personally put a dmc Spotify playlist when I play bloody Palace, listening to the chorus every wave gets really annoying,
so wait if you get sss as vergil does it play "i am the storm that is approaching", "bury the light deep within", or the guitar solo
@@dudewithnolifepoop there is a common misconception about this actually. SS and SSS ranks do not influence the music in any way. It plays either i am the storm or forsakened i am awakened parts when you reach S. If you keep S rank up for long it will eventually get to the bury the light deep within part. After that part it loops back to i am the storm or forsakened if you still have S rank
@@taktika4764 ohhh i see
The drummer for this song is Anup Sastry, who is an insanely talented dude. He's got such a deep pocket, but is also very tasteful with his fills. One thing to also mention is that this was mixed by Adam "Nolly" Getgood, who is one of the greatest rock and metal sound engineers of our time. He's incredibly smart and meticulous with his craft. He's done a bunch of other work, but most notably is one of the minds behind Periphery's sound, as well as they're former bass player. There was a lot of talent that went onto this track, including Victor and Casey. Overall this is one of the greatest video game compositions of all time.
18:33 Dayum! We definitely NEED complete version of this cover, I've watch this part over 10 times already.
I think this is everyone's new favorite DMC song.
Took them 14 years to top Devils Never Cry
@@wanpokkeit was Devil Trigger at first, made by the same composer of Bury the Light
That breathing and holding during classic guitar solos is totally on point. I can actually see it in other solos that I really love in metal ! That explains why I love certain metal solos and some not so much!
If you haven’t heard them already, I’d highly recommend listening to some of the songs used in “Just Shapes and Beats”, or even watching the gameplay with it since there’s no other audio besides the end and checkpoints. (S rank gameplay recommended, boss tracks only). Really good techno music, and other stuff mixed in too! Might be a good single video or mini series like you did with Pizza Tower and TF2.
YES! The songs weren't made for the game, but they are all incredibly good in my opinion.
@@blockingdead6442 MOST of it wasn't made for the game anyways. aside from the Shovel Knight remixes, Interlaced from the Lost Chapter was made for the game, along with the in-game instrumental version of the extra level song Creatures Ov Deception.
I love this guys commentary; he's so easy to follow, and he keeps his commentary quick. I was focused the entire video.
With Bury the light you can imagine the entrance of the main antagonist (in this case Vergil) at the start then as the "fight" or music progresses it gets more and more intense with breaks in between, until you reach the massive climax near the end. You could also see the solo section almost in a similar albeit smaller scale to this to where he shows up, massive climatic moment, then they are gone as quickly as they arrive. I only just found your channel but your passion for music and actually enjoying what your listening too while dissecting it is very admirable! If you want another DMC music recommendation I'd say Devil trigger is a definite good option. As for another Game altogether? The "Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance" Game has some amazing hits included in it's line up! Keep up the positive vibe's and work my dude! :)
That POWERful track always gives me MOTIVATION. Love your POWERful reaction too x) Also i can recommend you some ost's from "Supergiant games"... games:D Hades ("In the Blood", "God of the Dead", "Good Riddance", "Out of Tartarus") Transistor ("We All Become", "Old Friend", "She Shines") Pyre ("In The Flame") Bastion ("Setting Sail, Coming Home", "In Case Of Trouble", "Bynn The Breaker")
Add lament of Orpheus to that list for Hades.
one thing im in love with rn is watching people react to this masterpiece of a song
I feel like the almost angelic vocals are an analogy for the light that vergil (human part) has within himself gets buried due to his cold callus exterior, aka the distorted guitar, loud strings and drums. It's a perfect song for a perfectionist like him
"now im a little motivated" - vergil
This song's like an earworm for me Hear it once, or think about it, and I'm gonna be playing it a bunch for a while XD Really happy to see your reaction to this
I loved your explanation of how a guitar solo sounds good and authentic, by letting the music breathe. Never thought of it before, but it totally makes sense. The best solo's are the once where there is a moment to, as a listener, take a breath.
I have a feeling this video is going to be a doozy! It would be cool to have a reaction on the opening theme of Super Smash Bros. Brawl :D And happy video to all!
Thank you Richtheur!
Devil May Cry is one of my absolute favourite game series and this song is suuuch a love letter!
Honestly... how it was all written is one thing. To match all these sounds and stuff together must have been a hard time in itself. But I think the vocals are the reason I think I continue to come back to this song. Just how the vocalist sounds is just... perfect with all the sounds and the instrumentals I'm this.
My favorite part to watching reactions to this song is that modulation in the chorus, and yours totally didn't disappoint! It's such a risky move but it's so effective in this song!
Now that you've enjoyed this song, I recommend listening to Devil Trigger, which serves as Nero's theme in DMCV. EDIT: And there we go!

Seeing as you are taking suggestions! I would absolutely ADORE a look at the music from the game “Touhou: Luna Nights”, it is not an official touhou title but it is officially recognized by ZUN and has some really fun remakes of classic themes from EOSD which is the game Luna Nights is based apon! It is byfar one of my favorite games and is a total love letter to the franchise its based on!
We can all always use more Touhou music!
You should really do a reaction video on the Frostpunk soundtrack. The Game is about surviving in an apocolyptic winter set in the 1800s as the last city on earth. I recommend listening to 'the city must survive' from the main game, to 'the last autumn' and the 'on the edge' theme from the two dlc's. It's entirely orchestral, and my personal favourite soundtrack of all time. I always love watching these reaction videos, because I love learning about what makes the music I listen to so captivating.
You need to make a full version including your violin skills because dayum that section was insane
Your performance at the end couldn't have been any more perfect. It fits right in and somehow elevates it further. Didn't think it was possible to make this song any better but you did.
YEAAH I WAS WAITING FOR THIS ONE
for me this is the only music where an instrument made me legit cry, and not of sadness, I really don't know how to explain the feeling but after the 7 minute mark, where the bury the light line comes and then the solo, it seems, and I might sound crazy, but it seems to me the guitar is crying, that's the best way I can explain it, it's so good bro

Bury the Light is simply one of the best pieces of music from a video game. It really just hits the soul, that’s the best way I can describe it.
THAT VIOLIN SOUNDS LIKE A wITCHER SONG
You KNOW a guitarist is at the peak of talent when they give you such a clean, precise solo and you can feel their joy at playing and they just take their time to just put pure melody into our ears. It's my favourite part of the song and it's what inspired me to learn to play. It's not flashy, it's not hardcore or over the top, it's just.... amazing talented play that KNOW he enjoyed performing.
