  • Don McLean isn't country. He's closer to folk music. He wrote this song. Another of his well-known songs is American Pie. He also performed American Pie with Home Free on it's 50th anniversary.

  • Vincent Van Gogh had mental health problems. He took his life after a life of depression. His paintings weren't popular when he was alive. Now they are worth millions. He cut his ear off after the woman he loved rejected him. Don McLean still has the voice. Rob and Austin are perfect. The 5 part harmony backing when Don is singing is beautiful. Thanks!

  • This is such a great song by Don McLean! He originally did it in 1972. What a great remake with Home Free! Rob's voice is perfect for this song. Such a beautiful tribute to the sad life of the painter Vincent Van Gogh. He suffered from depression & committed suicide. He never saw any success during his life. But now his paintings are worth millions of dollars. Home Free also collaborated with Don on "American Pie".

  • Don wrote and sung this back in the 70’s. It’s about the sad life of the artist Vincent Van Gogh. So beautiful and the boys were a great backup. Rob sounded great and it’s just simply beautiful! Good one Dave!🤩😄

  • Shoo, Don's a legend and if you haven't already seen or reacted to Home Free and Don McLean singing American Pie, do it! It's on their channel. It's amazing! It's won awards and Home Free sang a little bit of the song at Don's Hollywood star reveal ceremony too.

  • the entire song is about Vincent Van Gough ... It was a hit by Don McClean in the 70s. One of Vincent's paintings is Starry Starry Night. Home Free totally honored Don in this version. 🌹🎼🌹

  • This is a song Don wrote kind of a homage about Vincent Van Gogh, the painter who painted the painting Starry Night. He (Vincent the painter) suffered horribly from anxiety and depression and was said to show signs of possible schizophrenia, he cut his own ear off because he heard voices. Yet he painted such wonderful paintings and his feelings came out in them.

    • None of Van Gogh's paintings sold when he was alive. Now they sell for millions of dollars. He was supported by his brother Theo.

    • He did many of his paintings of the views from his room at the mental hospital in Saint-Rémy and Auberge Ravoux. He finally came into the care of a homeopath, who cared for him the last seventy days of his life at Auberge Ravoux. Vincent unalived himself, with gunshot to the chest....never knowing how much his paintings would be loved by millions. So sad... but we also owe a lot more than art to Vincent....experimental mental health treatments used for him, are now common place. While his life ended tragically, the doctors who listened to him, did manage to help him.... but like many suffering from mental health issues.... it was too late. And by the way, it is just a pet peeve for me, but his last name is pronounced VanGOFF not VanGO.

  • A huge statement has been reinforced numerous times over the last half dozen years when notorious artists have collaborated with Home Free in singing legacy hits and in several cases have reached out to Home Free. Home Free has shown extraordinary respect to these artists to the point there is mutual respect and admiration that is very visible both ways. Home Free is a very humble group of guys who know how to pay their respects as they showcase these well-respected and well-known artists. Just wow, and we are the benefactors of this wonderful trust as they deliberately give each other and us a chance to enjoy once again a freshness to the decades that gone on before us with a wonderful tribute. Home Free is showing the industry a strong core value of High Regard, Strong Consideration, Attentiveness, High Opinion, and Due Regard for those who have set the stage for the music we enjoy today. Thank You Home Free, for your leadership by action that we all admire and appreciate doing things the right way!!!!! ❣

  • You might remember “American Pie” - HomeFree performed that song with Don also. This one (about Vincent Van Gogh) is performed in front of paintings by Van Gogh - and ends with the guys sitting in front of a Van Gogh exhibition. Rob’s voice is perfection. Don wrote the song in 1972 (I believe).

  • Don McLean asked Home Free to do American Pie with him for the 50th anniversary of the song. It's fabulous, of course. Solos by all of the guys as well as by Don, and Adam beatboxing throughout the 8+-minute song.

  • This is so beautiful. The video title is a little misleading. It's actually Don featuring Home Free. He invited them to back him on this re-recording for his new album, just as he invited them to do American Pie. They also back him on the title track to the new album, American Boys, which is a real bop. That audio-only video is on Don's channel.

  • Although the title cut on the American Pie album was the most famous and most popular, Vincent was always my favorite. It is a beautiful, poetic song and is even more meaningful when you know about Van Gogh and his art.

  • Don McLean did the fiftieth-anniversary version of his song American Pie with Home Free. Don wrote both American Pie and Vincent. Vincent is his touching tribute to Vincent Van Gogh. If I remember correctly, Don was a substitute art teacher when he wrote Vincent . This was quite a while before his successful music career with his iconic song American Pie. Vincent Van Gogh sold only one painting in his life. He truly wanted to reach out to people and teach them about God through his art. He was an awkward person who was often rejected socially. His brother Theo supported him financially throughout his life. Vincent spent some time in a sanatorium and later killed himself. Recently a theory has come out, that teenage boys in the French village where he lived accidentally killed him and the village covered up the crime as a suicide. Vincent constantly painted throughout his entire life even during his stay in the sanatorium. He kept producing masterpieces that the world rejected. Today long after his death, Vincent Van Gogh is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters in history.

  • I believe this song is a tribute to Vincent Van Gogh, and one of Van Gogh's best know paintings ("Starry Night"). Many believe Van Gogh suffered from severe bipolar depression and possibly other mental illnesses (some even theorize he was schizophrenic). He did commit suicide (only after cutting off one of his ears). Don McLean did write this song and perform it originally (in 1972; I remember when it came out; I'll be 69 in a few months, so I'm almost Don McLean's age!! And I claim that age is just a number--my knees disagree with me, but my mind still thinks I'm 35). The art you see in the back ground is all of Van Gogh's work--including "Starry Night".

  • This is truly phenomenal! What a voice Don McLean still has. Wow! And of course Austin also sang great, but Rob's voice is just perfect for this song. His voice so warm, soft as silk and full of emotion. The quiet background vocals and guitar playing complete it for me. It's the same song as my youth, but with the Home Free twist it's something different. A beautiful song where I, of course, as a Dutch person, know the history of Vincent van Gogh well. If I could, I would have given Don McLean and Home Free a bouquet of sunflowers in memory of Vincent. The sunflower one of his most famous paintings 🌻...... 💖 💖💖💖💖💖

I wondered how they could top American Pie, or at least match it, but this one is gorgeous! Yes! Don’s voice is still really good! I agree with what you said about someone who’s meant to sing can sing even when they’re older. Home Free really did their magic with the harmonies. Rob’s voice lent very well with that male angelic voice, and Austin’s lead and harmonies with Rob were perfection! I love a song that makes you feel something!

  • I was about to comment that this song was about Vincent van Gogh, but then saw that several people had already done that. ("Jackson" Pollock was correct, btw.) I was always very fond of this song and was really happy HomeFree did it. I think that while Tim has the widest range, Austin the highes pitch, and Adam Chance a voice that conveys a lot of emotion (of all the HomeFrees, I actually like his solo work best), Rob has actually the most beautiful voice of all of them. He wrote in the comments to the original video that this was one of his favourite songs of all time, and I loved that it gave him the chance to shine as bright as he deserves it, IMHO. My feeling is that he is often there, in the middle, keeping the arrangement together, together with Adam Chance, while the spotlight is more on Tim and/or Austin. Now I think part of that is that some folks are more extrovert than others, and of course the highest and the lowest notes get more attention. (And I don't have the feeling at all that he and Adam Chance as the voices in the middle range, are "second in line" in the band at all.) Anyway - I definitely have a soft spot for Rob's voice and hence, I was especially happy to hear more of him this time. 🙂

  • Good to see you back, checking out new Home Free. (They've released quite a few new tracks since you've been away.) Adore this and still brings the feels of the original which I enjoyed in the 70s although the addition of the guys adds a new texture. (Don sounds amazing!) Worth noting...we so rarely get to hear Adam sing. He's carrying the tenor, along with Rob (who's perfection here) and Austin, and backs them when they perform their individual sections. Speaking of Austin...were you aware that he is leaving HF this fall, after their current tour? He got married last year, wants to be home, start a family.

One of the (many) things I love about Home Free is how they spotlight other artist(s) and are always respectful of the artists vision of their music. I love the ending with all of them literally absorbed in the painting (& I'd love to have a copy of that picture!).

He is also good at capturing the sadness of his subjects, especially in his self portraits. His works were not considered important when he was alive, but after his su!c!de (and it took him a few days to pass on), of course everyone acknowledged the genius that he really was. 😢
