For Robots, so many aspects are thematically relevant: - the robots are introduced in the later segment of the storyline. They are programmed to destroy the remaining non-robots mercenaries (the playable characters in tf2), making that part a 60s Spy vs 70s Sci-fi clash (that's resonating with the initial RED (warm colors, wooden structures) vs BLU (cold colors, metal structures) clash between the two teams) - the atonal's instability reflects the game lore: both of their respectives Bosses were assassinated, so RED and BLU are unsure about what's going to happen next, not receiving any orders from above - the theremin-like sound is associated in the game with the robots, while the brass is associated with the regular (flesh) mercenaries (see: tf2 original theme), so they start taking turns like boxers swing at each others - then the bell ringing midway represents that western mexican-standoff between the two parties - that Blues Brother bass line coming back represents the robots relentless march towards the flesh mercenaries, as the offensive is resumed - the theremin-synth and brass then start synchronizing, playing the same melody, like how both flesh and steel mercenaries are indistinguishable when they're brawling in the melee - the track ends with the brass having the last word, representing the flesh mercenaries ultimately winning the battle TF2 is filled with details like that in all the designs - from the sound design, character design, level design, to evidently, music design. It's all love letters to everything the creators hold dear to their hearts.

Medics relationship with his team mates is more of a symbiotic one, more out of Medics selfish and sadistic nature, but what do you expect out of a band of psychopathic mercenaries. He gets protection and guinea pigs to experiment on, his team mates are kept alive. A far cry more interesting than the angelic healer that's been tired over the years, the Medic is one of a kind.

As a random fact, the "70s spy theme" is the intended theme of the game as a whole, according to developer commentary. This can be seen in a lot of the earlier maps, which feature "70s spy-tech" hidden around the place. 2Fort leans heavily into this, being composed of two front-facades hiding basements filled with high-tech computers. Several maps also contain hidden missile silos, another spy-movie staple.

The reason why that 40 second song, Rocket Jump Waltz, is so catching to the fans is primarily due to the fact that it's now associated with the voice actor of the Mercenary known as Soldier. The voice actor had passed away due to Covid-19, so multiple edits ended up using Soldier's signature theme to honor Rick May.
It's also a vibe. I remember there was a remix of it that was also pretty popular.
"You were good, son, real good. Maybe even the best." R.I.P. Rick May.
It was ALWAYS a vibe.
No. It's because it's the song that the soldier got. And "Rocket Jumping" is a mechanic where you fling yourself in the air by shooting a rocket at your feet, thus the lightweight feel of the song, and the dance in the title.
Well, Rick May ultimately passed away due to complication from Covid-19 in April 2020 when there hadn't been a vaccination available yet, but he had already been suffering from cancer and according to john Patrick Lowrie (the VA of the TF2 Sniper) had had a heart attack and a stroke some weeks prior to contracting Covid, which Lowrie only found out later from Rick May's family.

This is definitely getting a 2nd and 3rd Part. BTW, thr reason why the Rocket Jump Waltz has a 4/4 metric is due to the fact that a Rocket Jump is an explosion augmented jump, that has four moments: Climb, Peak, Descent and Landing.
Rocket Jump Waltz is named like that mostly because it's the theme of one of the mercenaries the Soldier, and one of his main weapons is a rocket launcher which is possible to do rocket jumps.

The context for the title of "Rocket Jump Waltz" is in one of the original gameplay trailers for Team Fortress 2 they would show off several of the classes. Rocket Jumping is a technique that was used very often in FPS games at the time so Valve decided to make it a core part of the Soldier himself. In his part of the trailer it was a montage of Soldier rocket jumping and that song plays during that segment.
In the developer commentary for tf2, they mention that the primary weapons look like instruments, and the soldier's rocket launcher looks like a clarinet, the main instrument in rocket jump waltz.
dang didn't know that
Love the contrast in "Robot" between the "robotic" synthesized instruments and the very human sounding instruments! "Robot" being the theme of Mann vs Machine after all!
Saw this one comment a while back that pointed out the fact that mvm starts off more with a robotic sound then gradually becomes more organic as the mercs make their way through eaves of robots.
@SunnyyDayzz the beats drops as the mercs finish the first wave and then the synth comes back in as wave 2 begins
This also applies to Half life, when the combine are still in control the music sounds more synthetic and mechanical. But when the rebels start winning later on the soundtrack uses human instruments
If there's a part 2, i would recommend "The Calm". One of my favorites songs of TF2.
Well said. It has a spaghetti western vibe, quite diverse from the rest of the songs.
I would recomend drunken pipes bombs
The Calm is probably my favorite track from the entire OST. You can hear the Ennio Morricone / Sergio Leone inspiration clear as day. You could put most of the track right into Once Upon A Time In The West and it wouldn’t even feel out of place. I love when you can see Valve go above and beyond in doing their research.
My brother loves Art of War. Maybe becuase he’s in a drum line.
I love the western aesthetic and music, and especially the first half (western half) is one of my favorite tracks ever
I love the round start music for Mann VS Machine (ROBOTS! is the "theme" for the mode), as with each completed wave, the music starts to have less synthesizers and bells, with more and more brass and other instruments being re-introduced, making it sound more human, like the mercs are taking back ground from the Machine army, its absolutely amazing to listen to.
I absolutely love that he picks up on the 1960’s aesthetic for the music. It fits perfectly since the story of the game take a place in the 1960:
The trumpet player for this ensemble is incredibly talented, so much time playing those high notes.
Valve Studio Orchestra rarely ever miss.

His rendition of rocketjump waltz gave me goose bumps. Absolutely beautiful addition of the violin 🥲
If you liked "ROBOTS!", you'll definitely enjoy "The Calm" These OST pieces are rarely played in game, and they're actually much more associated with the promotional short films released alongside them, which I highly recommend you watch since it contextualizes the music so much more. I instantly recommend "Meet the Medic" and "Mann vs. Machine". Also, "Rocket Jump Waltz" was most likely recommended because that's closely tied to the character class Soldier, who uses rockets to jump. His actor, Rick May, had recently passed away, so people use this song to honor him.
"Drunken Pipe Bombs", "Rocket Jump Waltz", and "MEDIC!" are just prime examples of good game music that I think gets lost by a lot of modern AAA games. Would highly recommend doing a viewing of each of the "Meet the [merc name]" videos. They're genuinely fun to watch and would probably be good channel content.
And if you do, don't fall into the same trap that every KZheadr falls in. Record your own audio as a separate track so you don't end up with literally zero audio for the Pyro video that contains a copyrighted song
19:44 Adding on to that thought is that in the context of the gamemode the merc are fighting a bunch of robots both tunes are in harmonious *opposition* the alien tune represents the bots and the brass for the mercs. Each melody is desperatly trying to one up the other going higher and higher until the climax where it explodes with trumpets. This is an excellent bit of musical storytelling and i love it.
The music while reading this comment made my heart race as I imagined every word
This has to be one if not the best reaction videos I've ever seen. The insights, improv sessions and enthusiasm really sets it apart from most.
I'm glad the TF 2 soundtrack is finally getting the recognition it deserves!
honestly Medic! is even cooler in context: in Meet the Medic, one of the many short films Valve made with Source Film Maker, it plays as Medic takes his newest inventions for a spin. he's perfected the Medigun, and testing the Ubercharge. and he is IN THE ZONE as he is healing his team, before going for the hail mary. 5:11 "Doctor, are you sure this will work?" "I HAVE NO IDEA" is such an iconic exchange, and the buildup to it actually working in the music is just. *chefs kiss* perfection.

Oh if you'd watch the "Meet the Medic" introduction video by Valve you would immediately see how incredibly WELL the music matches the visual and the symbolisms in it etc! Maybe that could be the next bonus TF2 reaction - Meet the Medic and Meet the Spy are absolute masterclass of combining music into a video!

Meet the spy has always been my favorite especially for its amazing tone and theme
The reason why I like Robots! is because the music transitions from synth to traditional instruments. They both clash but at the end, traditional instruments win. It's kinda symbolic, humans win at the end.
I have always adored the song, because I saw it as symbolic of the first to last fight between Mann Co. and Grey Mann's machines. And how towards the end, the synthetic and theremin melodies are rivaled by the traditional instruments representing the humans beating back against the robots in a final push. Literally gives me chills, although that's probably just me.

The entire premise of TF2 is that it takes place in the 1960's of a rather alien alternate universe from ours. The lore is laden with satire and tongue-in-cheek jokes, and the music absolutely helps that tone shine. It is gritty, bloody, barbaric, and... funny. Never taking itself too seriously, but also not relying on its humor to serve as a substitute for great gameplay. There are still many more songs from the game out there to listen to. This game and its soundtrack are so nostalgic and important to me, it's actually kind of insane
For reference, rocket jump waltz is very personal to the soldier class, as rocket jumping is his main way of getting around maps, its a short tid bit of soldiers own theme song, the reason its gained traction is due to it having more been associated with respecting rick may, the voice actor for the soldier who died in april 2022, due to the theme giving off somewhat tragic-war-like vibes when hearing it

9:50 was awesome holy crap. Love seeing awesome live renditions on good OSTs and TF2 is definitely one of my all time fav games. All these live musical commentaries are much appreciated!
I don't know music genres and stuff, but I think you perfectly put what I feel whenever I listen to TF2 soundtracks into words. I could not help but smile through the whole video watching you react, the soundtrack is amazing and it was being appreciated to the fullest! Loved your performances too, really adds a new, different vibe to the original music. Awesome video!!
Glad you enjoy it!
If you end up doing more TF2, Id suggest "A little heart to heart" and "the calm". These two songs are the intros for medic and robots respectively, and really add alot when listened to in succession. A little heart to heart is for a scene of medic with heavy on an operating table, having a discussion, while medic performs heart surgery, no anaesthetic. and medic is for when they reach the battlefield with Heavys newly ubercharged heart. The calm is for a section where both teams come together and walk towards an unknown threat, and robots plays after the reveal of the, uhh, have a guess.
Can I guess that is is…. Robots?
@@itacticlesnowman726 nahhh cant be gotta be something else
I have 2000 hours in TF2 and haven't played in many years but these tracks immediately take me back to those chaotic lobbies. I am reinstalling now!
Good to hear, TF2 is definitely a game worth your time :D
you're in luck, there's a major update that just got out recently.
@@luciusrex8604holiday sized update let's say
his reaction is the ideal reaction every tf2 player expected when they show their friends this soundtrack
Stumbled upon your channel recently. I am absolutely obsessed! Insanely underrated. I also ADORE your improv jazz sessions, they really set you apart from other reaction channels. Earned yourself a sub! Wish you the best
Welcome aboard!
So obvious this guy absolutely loves music, a joy to watch
"This music gives me a very spy vibe." Spy: "I am the spy."
My lord. What you added onto rocket jump waltz there was simply beautiful. I really enjoyed that!
Awesome video and incredible insight. Anybody can call themself a “producer” or “composer”, but I knew you understood what you were talking about as soon as you mentioned the soundtrack’s homage to 60s/70s films and music. That’s literally spot on, as the game precisely takes place during the 60s/70s.
We absolutely need a part 2 for the rest of the soundtrack. Every track has its own amazing merits.
YOU'RE KILLING IT THERE! 3:40 I was bopping!
It's been fun watching you have fun in experiencing this music and I appreciate the breakdowns (when referring to individual instruments or other composers/songs). I'd like to see you react to the music from Deep Rock Galactic (particularly the combat music), please!
It’s been 3 years and Rocket Jump Walz still makes me tear up to this day. Rest In Piece Rick May
I cried as well haha
The track "Medic!" goes SO HARD because a medic can and will win the game for the team if they're allowed to use their Übercharge
Quick, airblast!
it's the slatemate breaker of tf2, it deserves the track nothing beats the feeling you get when your team breaks the stalemate together, the game just suddenly feels different for that moment

Your musical analysis is SPOT ON! I had a FIELD DAY watching this video. Cheers!
Glad you enjoyed it!
please do a part 2!! I love tf2 and your insight in its music is really interesting and entertaining!! ❤️❤️
I already loved rocket jump waltz, but your improv on that song was beautiful. Keep it up man, that improv in particular was amazing.
I actually got to chat with Mike Morasky during uni last semester, really interesting guy to talk to! He mentioned that he has synesthesia, so when he's working on a song he sees like a complex statue kind of thing, and when it looks "right" to him, the song is done. Pretty cool stuff.
My favorite thing about ROBOTS! is how it slowly goes from a very fabricated theme to more human as they add things like trumpets and saxophones into the mix.
I remember you from a few of Michelle and Josiah’s streams/raids. And now I see you pop up in recommended reviewing one of my favorite soundtracks. Real dope stuff man.
I'm sure people have suggested A Hat in Time a lot. There's a load of legendary songs from that song, like Your Contract Has Expired or Rush Hour. My personal favorite that I'd love you to hear is Subcon Village Remix ft. Echorobot. It uses a lot of impressive ethereal tones in a lo-fi funk. You'd love it.
"Robots" has a very interesting play to it. One i just found out recently. In the game, you have an alternate mode where you fight against robot versions of the mercenaries. And the music has that vibe to it. It's the classical and real instrument fighting against the programed and robotic music. And towards the end, it builds up, and they both fight to get louder than one another, whoever can get on top!! So its essentially man vs machine!!
A Mann vs Machine
The addition you made to Rocket Jump Waltz gives a peaceful or sincere, or maybe even melodic feeling. With the passing of Rick May, the piece is emotional, and with your addition, it makes me even more emotional. Thank you for checking out the game's music. For video game music suggestions, for a more electronic-ish based ones, I'd recommend Payday 2! Just subbed, keep up the great work!
