I like to plug a junk cable into the connector so I can tension it while flowing. Works much better than tweezers since the weight of the cable will pull down, hands-free.

You good,sir are the yoda of solder. Your tips have left my hairline intact. Thank you for the great advice. These type of removals used to take 30 minutes for a 20 pin inline header. I used to hate them, now it’s just like anything else. Keep the videos and GREAT advice coming.

Great video. I generally use a solder sucker but can see the benefits of using the braid to wick the solder instead. Also, using a tinned wire to remove components with several leads is a much easier method to ensure no damage when removing them. Thanks for the tips and pointers. It helps when refreshing oneself.

Thanks Mister!! 😁I was shown a technique years ago doing what you are doing but without the wire. Your method is MUCH better!! Also, you can't go around corners with just solder and even in a straight line, it was messy and inconsistent. I never liked or used that method. I will use yours all the time!!

That's the problem with hot air, it can often burn the plastics, even with kapton tape it can be tricky. Can't wait to try this method! Looks so easy! Mr SolderFix may I ask what temperature you generally use for desoldering components? I use 380°C to 400°C
Hi , thank you for your comment. The temperatures I would use for desoldering are roughly 340 degrees centigrade for leaded solder and about 30 degrees hotter for unleaded. I may vary these slightly for certain parts but generally these are the ones that work for me . In the making of all my videos I've never used the added benefit of a hot plate to warm the underneath of the board up just in case people were wondering . Hope that helps , take care 👍

If have a tipp for you too. If you only have thinner soldering wire and want some bigger one you can simply fold it over and drill it together. Anyways, tried this method now and it works like a breeze. Thxalot for sharing!

Excellent... I would have struggled to remove those. Heat gun wick and maybe try low melt with lots of struggles
Hi , thank you for your comment. I've realized most people who watch my channel probably don't have a hot air station available to use so these methods hopefully can help all those people out . I've posted other videos where I've soldered similar types of connectors ( How to solder SMD correctly part 2 , also part 5 ) , it is hard but now I find it pretty easy . You just have to be quick with your soldering iron otherwise the heat travels into the plastic body . But it can be done with practice. Maybe these videos will be of use to you . As for the flux I haven't decided on a suitable replacement yet ( does anyone out there know of a similar one to SMFL200D ? ) , If so post it in the comments somewhere and hopefully it can help us all out , will be much appreciated. Always best to add solder and heat. Sucking solder only works great on single sided boards
Could you tell me what is the wire you use for removing.
Hi , the wire I used in this video for the FFC connector , ethernet connector and the box header removal was just plain tin copper wire roughly 24 - 26swg. And the wire where I removed the 8 way straight header was simply one copper wire from the centre of some earth wire , nothing special. Any tin copper wire for example will do these methods as long as it's a decent size for the task being undertaken. Hope that helps 👍

I've always used for many years a flux called SMFL200D but unfortunately it's recently been discontinued so I'm looking for a new type at this present time . Hi , I now use Loctite 6381-35 liquid flux which is a great non corrosive flux , so if left on the board will do no damage. Trouble is I can only find it in 1 litre or bigger bottles . If you can find it in smaller quantitys it would be good to know . Many places sell this , but the price varies massively . Thanks for your question , take care 👍

Hi , thank you for your comment. For many years now I have used SMFL200D flux but unfortunately it has recently been discontinued in the form I used . It's still available in a flux pen but I'm not a fan of them . If you don't mind these pens then Farnell , RS Components and others stock this .I'm looking for a new type of flux at this point in time. I still have a small supply to keep me going but when I do find a decent alternative I will post it on KZhead. Sorry I couldn't help anymore . Thanks again , take care 👍

Hi , thank you for your comment. I've actually removed very similar length devices also with 16 pins . Exactly the same way as methods I've shown in some of my videos . I place a wire along the whole length of the device , solder all the pins to this wire then I've used 2 soldering irons and just done 8 pins with each iron so this way the heat is spread along really easy. Works a treat and is very quick. Hope that helps , thanks again 👍
Personally, I think the most difficult part to remove completely is the Nec/Tokin Capacitors of PS3. Most people are directly violently turned away. But if you want to measure the capacitance after taking it off, you need not destroy the Capacitors.
Hi , I must admit I've never tried to remove any of these . I've watched a couple of videos on them and they do look a strange type of component . Looks like a hot plate and hot air would be the way to go but without doing them I can't really guess. Thank you for your comments about these 👍
I completely destroyed a PS4 controller PCB using hot air to take off the joystick module. I realised that too much heat is being drawn into the metal casing from the signal ground pins, which meant that the rest of the board was getting toasted while the solder I was trying to melt was still solid. If I'd used this method I probably would have been able to rescue the controller.

Sometimes a heat gun seems the answer to your soldering issues but actually it can do more harm than good , that's when the soldering iron methods can come into play . It's just a case of knowing when to use either heat gun or iron , that's the trick . Experience normally gives you the answers. Thanks again for your support of my channel , take care 👍
