You are confusing the man for the comedian. There are many interviews in which he shows genuine care for working people and their rights. Also he's was left wing. That didn't make him tribal. Being tribalistic would mean that he was a Democrat, which he was not. He did not believe in electoralism, which is also a tenet of Leninism and a few other left ideologies. Even though greats like John Mulaney can easily be enjoyed via just listening to him, his physical demeanor matches his deadpan delivery and it really does add a certain something to his act. Some acts are weakened by physical comedy and pre-cooked joked imo, for instance Bo Burnham. I love his work and his damn near clinical timing and dedication to memorizing his material is phenomenal, but sometimes it comes across as if he's doing everything he can not to improvise. It limits him a bit.

Watch most British standup and you'll notice they don't laugh at their own jokes, they're focused on wordplay, etc. Of course we have a lot that aren't but even in this for instance he's mimicking talking points that anti-pc people have and dragging them out to ridiculous extremes (wives, wives, wives).
