Woodturning Kindling - I suppose it was always going to be 💩

I recently had a log delivery, along with a couple of bags of kindling, I also had some resin that needed using up, so I'm afraid I couldn't resist whacking them together to make the most beautiful hollow form I've ever made 🤣 or is it 💩 I cant make my mind up...

  • I think this project turned out quite well! I’d love to see you dye the kindling pieces & then do this again. Rainbow pot!

  • It has a kind of crude charm. I like it. Maybe do it again with black/clear resin to really crank up the contrast, and/or with many offset layers in high contrast colours to get an 'agate' vibe.

  • I love your imagination as much as your talent. That came out beautifully! It's so different yet familiar. That probably doesn't make any sense to anyone who isn't me, but at least you know I'm bloody impressed yet again! I've shown the old man a few of your videos (I swear he watches you in secret because I told him he should watch you every week! He wouldn't openly do what I told him to 😂😂.) He's taken up woodwork again (disability has taken over his ability to renovate cars anymore, but over all the decades I've known him, he's been very comfortable with woodworking. I think he did a CSE in it. Not a GCSE. I said it was decades 🤣). With a bit of help he built himself another shed at the foot of the garden and disappears down there most weekends. He actually refurbished a beautiful jewellery box for me for Xmas 😊 You're a good role model! He's pretty much addicted to auctions, and over the last couple of years he's got himself a few lathes of different types and sizes (he has a smaller wooden one as a decoration on the front windowsill in the living room!) and he's having a ton of fun. It keeps him off the streets lol. He was even able to buy a huge lot of veneers of many woods (he's actually a qualified tree surgeon and consultant, so he knows a fair bit about identifying wood) for something stupid like £15-20. He used some flame mahogany to refurbish a Victorian writing slope which he keeps his other project stuff in (watches. I don't know why, but he's into old watches. 🤷🏻‍♀️) For others who are inspired by Andy, particularly if you're starting out, local auctions are fantastic sources of wood, either as restoration projects or like above, veneers. It goes from the sublime to the ridiculous (if you're an auction newbie, go scope one out before deciding to join in on one, and don't forget the mark up!) Many auction houses clear out the homes of the deceased or those who have to go into nursing homes. Their hobby equipment can often be sold at a fraction of its real value (I find that a bit heartbreaking, but you may as well buy it because someone else will otherwise), and it can save you _hundreds_ while collecting tools and materials. Watch out for "how to" books if there's an obvious job lot of hobby stuff. They're usually there in their own lot! Don't turn them down just because they're old!

  • It doesn't work for me. The pattern from the cut ends is fun, but the sides just look a bit off. Part of it I think is that there is too much tonal contrast between the wood and the resin especially when you're not getting the nice grain patterns of the cross-section. But it ws worth a try. And it was hardly a waste of materials in the circumstances. Next time I'd like to see what it would be like with the firewood cut into rough cubes.
