Woodturning - My Biggest and Definitely my Highest Turning !!

This was not my usual kind of turning, but I thought it was an interesting project to take on.
I was contacted by a firm who were doing restoration work to an old textile mill, Bridgehouse mill in Howarth, West Yorkshire. It is a listed building and dates back to the 18th century and at the highest point it had a turned finial that needed replacing. Since medieval times, pointed finials have been fitted to the apex of roofs, as they were thought to prevent the devil from sitting there!
It was made from Red Grandis Hardwood which is a high performing timber, with exceptional durability and perfect for external use. So lets hope the new finial lasts as long as the original!!
I needed to cut a large mortice to join the two pieces together and was kindly sent a couple of large forstner bits from Planet Plus Ltd, who stock a wide range of woodworking and woodturning tools, well worth checking them out...

  • Oh Andy, that was the most beautiful turning you've ever done. The anticipation for the final marriage was palpable. That was incredible, and to have your work sitting atop that mill must be very rewarding to help restore a listed building. Well Done.

  • That's definitely _up there_ with your best work! I'll get me coat... 😉 Seriously, it's amazing how you can turn a block of heavy wood (it looks heavy to me!) into such a precise shape, or rather a number of them. It also gives me even more respect for the guy who made the original. He didn't have an electric lathe, just a manual one and, maybe (if money and type of lathe allowed for it) an apprentice to help out where possible.

  • Hi 👋, Andy , that was a great project, well worth the effort, great layout procedure, about 10/12 years ago, I made something very similar, five in total, that was fitted to a property called latter house in Norfolk, UK, I had to replace the facias and barge boards soffits, and replace some ends of our wall plate on either end of the building in Oak, the bargeboards were scallops, They were joined into the bottom part of the turning final which was square, They took me approximately five and a bit months to make, this included the time making new bargeboards under soffit, and repairing parts of the ring beam going round the roof structure, The Bargeboards , 15” , the total length of the final was around 6 foot, as approximately 20 odd inches was square for the bargeboard to fit into, Keep up the great work , stay safe, look forward to seeing your next territorial, now retired, living in France, , Phil from the moulin, France .

  • I used to turn wood before losing my left arm sometime during the Battle of the Bulge while I was on shore leave in Viet Nam and not long after the Korean War. I know from experience that there's no VD like what you can get in Asia. Anyway, this is another great job. I can only imagine the difficulty in duplicating something vs. creating it from scratch. You are obviously a master at both.

  • There were some very odd sounds during this turning compared to your usual projects. From 9:54 to 10:02 is something out of a scifi movie. It's got to be type of wood since this is not what you normally use. In the end, you have a perfect replacement that you can point to and say, "I made that." Good job!

  • Andy, I have watched many of your videos and lusted after many of your turnings. This video is a gem because it demonstrates so clearly how you planned the work to match the original. While I will NEVER have the "Andy Eye" to make the beads and coves so beautifully symmetrical, watching an artist of your caliber exercise so much patience before ever mounting the wood on the lathe.......well, it's a wonderful lesson for all your viewers. To match a particular profile, it's all in the planning. Thank you for this great piece. I'm always amazed at how you manage to deliver so much content in so short a video.
