In this wood turning video I turn a natural edge bowl from a large Yew log. With the size of the piece and the cool looking natural edge I knew it would be out of balance and even with my makeshift lathe support I had to start turning around 250 rpm and I think the maximum speed I got to was around 550 rpm so it was definitely a challenging piece to turn, I finished it with Danish oil...

Love the optical illusions where it looks like your chisel isn't even touching but there's still all the chips flying off. It came out gorgeous
That piece has so much character, it's beautiful.
I could stare at the grain and the chatoyance of this piece for hours at a time - you've really brought a beautiful Yew log to life.
Me looking up chatoyance…
@@yoda_8206 😂😂😂 I know.. I had to look up how to spell it, after hearing it multiple times on the Sprague Woodturning channel and eventually understanding what it meant. 😂😂
Your full of chatoyance…stare at me in my chatoyance aka cats eye. 🤪
Isn’t that one of Michael's sisters…Chatoyance Jackson.
@@jeremycoleman318 😂😂😂😂
You've got the patience of a saint and an attention to detail that is all too rare in the age of mass-produced garbage. It's nice to see how some of the techniques you've developed while making these videos have become second nature at this point. Please keep on turning, I never miss a project.
Thankyou
It’s just …beautiful.
Your hands and arms must be really strong because cutting into those wavy edges looked brutal. It turned out gorgeous.
Thankyou 💪😁
The grain is mesmerizing...........beautiful
I just came back from a horrible day at the university where I collapsed out of exhaustion and pain. The first thing I did coming back home was grab a popsicle and put on this video. Please understand, you bring me so much peace. Thank you for your beautiful work. It’s meditative and mesmerizing, it helps me forget about my burning throat from vomiting and the pain of my illness. ❤
Thanks .. I'm glad you find the videos helpful
Had my doubts when you first spun the piece but you pulled it off, lots of skill involved with this one, well done sir.
Thankyou Phil
That is the coolest piece of yew ive ever seen! A Masterpiece!!!! I love the fluted yew trunks they have so much personality and beauty. 🔥 🔥 🔥
Thank you very much! It was a cool piece of Yew
Jeez! I had no idea. I thought you were making an art piece for the wall but this bowl is gorgeous. Bravo Master Woodman 😊
That gave a bit of anxiety at first... What a special piece. Absolutely beautiful.
I must say I got really upset when I saw you with that chainsaw ha king off those, what I call tentacles, I was telling myself he can't do that to such a beautiful piece of wood. Then I wiped my tears and said give him a minute and see what he does with it, I shouldn't have doubted you to know how to bring out more beauty that's already there... Wow that was a tense one... Great job.. ❤️❤️❤️
The result is almost spiritual. Depth of beauty, with a bright spirit.
Interesting. very 60s. Reminds me of stuff I used to see on suburban coffee tables when I was a kid.
This piece of wood is beautiful to begin with. WoW! ;-), the out come of this, just amazing.
Thank you!
I like this one. It reminds me of the clocks we all had growing up in the 80s and 90s lol. Beautiful work
A Herculean effort! 👏👏 Congratulations King Charles!
Your videos now have me spotting wood laying around and going, "OMG, I would love to turn that.". The only problem, I don't even have a lathe.
😂
Steven attaway- maybe join a woodworking club and try someone else's lathe. You're already addicted, so this is the next step for you 😆
Amazing. Love the variegated color. And it’s 100% natural. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Thank you!
Oh, my, Andy. That piece is sooooo incredibly beautiful! Were it mine, I'd hang it on a wall for maximum visual effect. 👍
Andy that was a MASSIVE piece of timber. I didn't know you could turn a chunk that big, yet alone slide the lathe all the way to the end. Fantastic piece of artwork man!!! Love your work.
Thankyou
And again yew made made another beautiful piece 👏👏👏
Oh WOW! Another stunner! 💙💢💙💢💙💢💙💢💙
Oh my goodness.... that's the most beautiful bowl that I've ever seen...it just speaks to me.. thanks for sharing.
Thanks Shawna 👍
I absolutely love watching this! I find it so fascinating that when you really speed it up, it looks like slow mo. Your hand looks like it is moving normal and it doesn't even look like you are touching the wood.
What an absolutly STUNNING charcuterie board! The colours of the wood, the rings and the live edge! Its perfect!
What wobble! Such a beautiful endgrain piece! Again blown away by your patience and the reward it produces!
Thanks 👍
You make the scariest things look easy! Bravery at its finest. Skills beyond mere mortals. Exquisite work.
Thank you!
Hi Andy, incredible artistry. You are very unique in your approach to very unusual pieces of mother nature. I am sitting here with a torn, Achilles tendon, on my sofa, watching video after video of yours, and it gives me great happiness, and somehow eases my pain buddy. God bless you!
Many thanks
i’m sitting in my recliner watching as well with my right torn Achilles. Almost at the end of my 3rd week and boring. I had my left done a couple of years ago…..so I know the routine. Speedy recovery my friend
Very nicely done piece of Yew, outstanding once again.
One of the most beautiful pieces of wood before you even started! So many patterns and colours. It sort of reminded me of some of the huge fungi that grow out of trees given its natural shape. That's not meant in any way as an insult! You brought out both shape and colours beautifully ❤
So raw, so natural!!! I love it!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Now I could be wrong, but I think this is the first time you've had to use an extension on the lathe? The piece was beautiful, these are always the highlight of my evening.❤
Thanks Adham .. I think this is only the second time I've videod using it 👍
I would want to put this on a glass table to be able to see both the top and bottom.
Gorgeous piece of yew ,stunning ❤
I REALLY LOVE 💕 THIS PIECE! Such a beautiful talent to be given from god.
Oh what a beauty! I'm so glad you could preserve most of that edge.
Absolutely gorgeous - thank you for sharing another brilliant piece! Cheers and happy weekend!
Thanks Adam 👍
Now that was something else. Top job son as always Scotland sends its regards
I'd have it as a centerpiece on either a dining room table or coffee table in a great room.
Wow Andy! You turned this incredible piece of wood into a magnificent work of art! Bravo Maestro Bravo!!
Now that’s what I call a brilliant result!
It was a good idea to make a shallow bowl. It looks like a splash! I loved!
Wow that was surreal to watch. It looked like the wood was spinning but not spinning almost frozen at moments, then reversing while spinning all at the same time! Very unique piece, amazing job 👏 (And no...i haven't been drinking ha ha )
That grain is amazing, nature is wonderful
It's like a water splash of grains and colors!
I feel some wood doesn't need to be made into anything it just needs it's inner beauty to be exposed! Insane in the membrane! Awesome work my friend!
The final finishing coat transformed this beautiful piece into a 3 dimensional work of art!
I was fortunate to purchase this piece from Andy Phillip. The pictures don’t do it justice. The shape, colors and finish of this Yew wood are exceptional. Thank you so much!
Thanks so much.. glad you like it 👍
Now that is just beautiful. Simply beautiful.
It's a beautiful piece of wood, Andy, so I can totally see why you fancied tackling it, but my word that looked tough! Great end piece though, spectacular.
Thanks... it was a tough one
wow, just wow. i have to say you have been quite the inspiration for me this past year. long story short, i had to close my business of remodeling homes due to surgeries. 16 now. i finally got a lathe for the small shop i built in the yard. was told i couldn't work at all anymore. bah, i can, do and will continue. just watching what you do, has opened new horizons. thanks.
Thanks.. glad the videos have been a help .. I actually got back into turning after having spinal surgery and was unable to work for a year ... stay positive 👍
Stunning.
What a truly stunning piece - from the overall shape to the beautiful showing off of the grains throughout. The spinning force of this piece must have been incredible! Thanks for sharing your work - its so fun to watch.
Always interesting, thanks Andy look forward to your content every week!!!
That is absolutely gorgeous, Andy!
Another inspiring turning. You are the Buster Keaton of wood turners. Here is PNW we have Pacific Yew trees. They are not easy to come by for several reasons. As a forest worker I have compiled a good number of yew chunks, will turn as I get more competent. Have come across a yew wood tree years ago on ridge with an approximate 36-40" DBH. Was very pyramidal as it was only about 60' tall with healthy top.
Absolutely breathtaking. The spirit of the tree is grateful for your skill and artistry.
Stunning piece of wood - that must have been an ancient yew. Not just the size, weight and shape but the hardness of yew as well. You can always see the potential in a piece of wood and tailor the approach to fit. Nothing remotely like any of the gatepost series because there is nothing like this convoluted piece. I hope it was as much fun to produce as it was to watch.
Magnificent !!!!!!!!!!! Looks like a big Fall Leaf
The finished product is even more badass!! Great work man!! Iv got some logs I would love to have u finish for me…came from the trees from our mountain house❤❤❤
Andy, just saw this and I am always amazed by your work. What else can I say other than, "Yew rock!"
Thanks 👍
Show-off! 😀 That turned out beautifully. The colours and shapes of those growth rings look amazing.
That's some fantastic grain pattern and a great finished piece! I may need a slab of that for a top layer of a bass guitar...
Beautiful work, a gorgeous piece.
Thanks 👍
That wood is absolutely beautiful. I’m glad you kept it as a simple shallow bowl letting the beauty of that wood just shine .
🏆Years ago I had a 20' container as a workshop and once had to ratchet strap my lathe (Nova 3000) to the floor and wall! It worked👍🏻
I've already used the word "exquisite" today so we will keep it simple with fantabuloso! Man, that was a challenge and I could feel every thump, thump, thump with you, Andy. Great job! 😃 Phil
Thanks Phil... 😂 thump thump thump is all I can here .. 250rpm to start !! I really need a concrete floor 😫
That's absolutely stunning! Gorgeous! 😍❤️
Balancing a piece of wood like that must be like trying to balance a ceiling fan-frustrating and near impossible. I'm impressed that you managed to work the piece! Now I'll go watch it and comment on the finished work after 😁
That is absolutely beautiful.
Respect. Never seen you turn wood on the edge of your turning table also without that second pin support too. Made my hands sweaty by just looking at it so I can't imagine you being a bit anxious during the process.
Thanks .. It was a bit sketchy at times
Andy, that turned out fantastic what a beautiful bowl the grain is smashing well done
It's amazing your lathe has any bearings left :D The way you work in sympathy with the wood is beautiful to watch, and the final piece is a work of art. I could look at that grain for hours.
Absolutely gorgeous!!! Outstanding work!!!
WONDER-FULL!!!! Hardest? Well Andy, you made it look easy.
Thankyou 😁
Wow; a smashing piece of turning. Excellent
Thankyou 👍
Love your work. Always amazed by your creativity.
Thank you! 👍
I do not have the words to express the beauty of this piece. Magnificent!
Absolutely beautiful Andy, I thought this would be a beautiful clock
That was unique and beautiful! You definitely did that Yew log justice. Well done! 👏❤
Fascinating and absolutely gorgeous!
I’m so happy yew (ha- I’ll see myself out) kept the gorgeous organic edge. The grain is beautiful and this piece turned out incredible! Plus, the didgeridoo-esque noise at 9:37 is probably a bit funnier to me than it should be lmao
This is a wonder piece with the natural edge, Well done 👏👏
THAT is a beautiful piece of wood. And wonderful turning.
Thankyou 👍
Those colors are amazing, wow great job, I could just see my flabby bits gettin in the way
Just wanted to let you know, we appreciate you risking your life for our entertainment. 😁
😁 Thankyou
that is a awesome piece ... beautiful
Absolutely gorgeous Andy.
Thanks Jack
This is beautiful! I love the curve and all the colors in the wood
Thanks Jonas 👍
That's another level of beauty.
Just incredible the colors and shape all of it! It kinda of makes me think of the colors and shapes of a oil rainbow on water
This was more than interesting. This was a work of art being sculptured by a master craftsman. One of a kind piece of beauty. You always amaze with everything you touch, and as if by magic something awesome is born. Top quality as always. 🖖👍
Thanks 👍
Gosh, what an absolute stunner!
That's an insane piece. The shallow dish was the perfect selection for this project and it came out GREAT! !! !!! Thanks Andy
Wow.....just wow!!! That piece made you work hard but what a beautiful result!!
That has to be the best piece i have ever seen on youtube
Thankyou 👍
Amazing project; beautiful!
Thank you!
Beautiful as always sir Phillip.
As usual, a beautiful piece of art. Thank you for sharing your skill with us. 💖
Thanks 👍. Yew had a bit of a challenge with this one but turned out great. Thanks again for your time in making this video. It isn’t easy. Cheers
Thanks Colin
