Once I read a quote. It was a commanding officer, maybe a General advising a younger man, perhaps a Lieutenant or Captain on what to do when he met his new command in the west. It went something like this; "When you meet your command you must impress your men with the fact that you are someone they want to lead them." The reason I remember it at all is because it flew in the face of what I imagined leadership to be in an era so soaked in autocracy. Having found at the time thirty years ago that the Marine Corps, where I'd spent four years favored a more democratic management style than the Parks and Recreation department I found myself working for, this struck a cord with me.

I'm so glad you mentioned catalogues! My friend Tom Franklin (he once had a guest appearance in an episode of Deadwood) taught me that you can buy facsimiles of the Sears & Roebuck catalogues; Franklin used the 1896 edition to write his novel Hell at the Breech, and he wound up with so much useful information that he used it again to write Smonk, his follow-up novel that he calls "a Southern," the Alabama equivalent of a Western!
Yep, thankfully someone hi-resolution scanned some of these antique catalogs and now we have those to peruse. I also have Strawbridge & Clothiers. Excellent resources.
So sorry for the loss of your friend Cactus Jack. I enjoy researching Wild West info. So many interesting things to learn about and look at in the old catalogs. Yet it is the actual history of the era that I love the most and the people that lived in those times. It never ceases to amaze me about how far people traveled back then before the railroads. Not just one way trips either.
If you haven't got one, get the Strawbridge & Clothiers catalog reprint. It's excellent.

I remember having to write a paper in 7th grade on Transportation in the Old West. My research was watching a bunch of old westerns, going into deep enough detail as to include the spting s in the seats of buck boards being made similar to barrel hoops. I got an A on that paper too...

I'm writing fiction of the Old West but want it to heavily grounded in facts. These videos have been very useful for my research and also learning more about the Old West, which my understanding of it was limited to Hollywood films that relied on a romanticize version rather than the real deal.

Years ago I did a lot of research on the mountain man era, the civil war, the cowboy era and WW2. At different times of course and mostly in my much younger years. I also researched some when I worked as a substitute teacher. I am impressed with the wealth of information you have come up with through the years. I hope you are keeping a good record of all you’ve found. Hopefully there will be younger folks that’ll take an interest in discovering how we became the country we are. Keep up the good work. I know how tough it can be to find information on things.

It is interesting how much has survived from the Period. A lot of people seemed to realize that they were living in a special time and kept diaries. This was from at least 1607 to about 1920. Then again 1942- 1945
They are frequently fascinating.

I’ve researched the Federal Naval Forces on the lower Mississippi below Vicksburg especially the USS Essex. Found a sailors personal journal that filled in many gaps in the historical record and refuted local stories about that time frame of 1861-1864 activities

Thank you and your patient wife for all your efforts to continually sift through stuff to give us the nuggets of info. The searvhing does have its dark side. A retired wealthy doctor living in Patagonia Az eas also a fanatic collector old western documents, photos, writings, and books. Unfortunately, he was also a mean spirited drunk (pun intended). He'd only allow others to use his vast collection for researching if they could keep up with his drinking. The sessions never ended well I was told and whatever was discovered by the researcher was lost the next morning.

Ya doo a great job fer a rapscallion. Love the fact you encourage primary resources and read read read both on the internet and actual books. As always be open to new information that might be discovered. The idea is to be as correct as possible by genuinely doing the research. Sometimes there is only one source. Sometimes there are multiple sources. If these sources conflict with each other you do a good job at presenting both. I find sometimes Wikipedia is a good start, but it is not always right or has complete information. Glad you encouraged folks to be sure to check the actual references they use. While unfortunately they are closed for renovations until early next year the Arizona State Museum in Tucson has an extensive collection of resources. While in Grad School one of my jobs was to research topics for Arizona and the West magazine. I spent numerous hours in their newspaper collection. They have microfiche and digital copies of a large number of newspapers from the Southwest dating back to the mid 1800's. Curiously some are printed in both English and Spanish but my research showed that these were not merely translations but entirely different items. They are well worth a visit and will reward you with many stories. The University of Arizona Library also has an enormous collection of resources in the form of books, diaries, and maps.

Good stuff, researching history gets fascinating and can lead you down paths you never expected. Not an old west thing but I got curious about why Martin Luther King Jr. had the same first two names as the 16th century reformer Martin Luther. That led me on a fascinating trail that, among other places, passed through the World Baptist Conference in 1934 Berlin. And good point about Wikipedia, which some people forget. Wiki is an encyclopedia, but is not a primary source. However, it's a very good tool for giving an overview of a subject and linking to some real primary sources. Thanks again for all you do, and I look forward to getting to old Tucson in June!

Just a thought. This channel does an excellent research effort and even better visuals to grab attention. Wandering around Southern AZ I have come across amazing snippets from our past. Early Patagonia couldn't afford a jail so offenders were chained up to an old tree stump and fed by the owner of the Chinese eatery contracted to do so. For those locals seeing the sites there are a wagon loads of yarns waiting to be told yo your friends.

I do enjoy your videos as I have long had an interest in history and like so many here grew up watching westerns. I also only use Wikipedia to find sources of information as it is not noted as trustworthy as far as accuracy is concerned. Speaking of westerns and Wikipedia I once did contact them because the bio for Dale Robertson said he fought at the Battle of El Alamein. Now Dale did serve in the US Army but in Europe, where he won the Bronze and Silver Stars, but not in North Africa. They did remove that reference to El Alamein. America did contribute to El Alamein in the form of some nice big new M-4 Sherman tanks which came in quite handy.

I greatly appreciate your research and detail of your productions. I have several things I'd like to donate to your efforts including excepts from a patient ledger of a physician from 1881-1888, that includes what type of things were occurring and being treated as well as his charges that in some cases were bartered for crops, feed, meats, fruits, vegetables and pasturing. Another is a book of personal recollections, collected between 1930's and 50's, often printed as a few paragraphs of nostalgia in a local newspaper, by a woman, that she got from people who'd lived roughly from 1840's to around 1900 and related details of things to their times, such as organizing schools, townships, churches, cemetaries as well as auctions, land grants, etc. This is not as boring as it may sound, as participants often colorful in their recollections. You like to take a multidemensional approach to your era of interest and this may be of interest. Is their a mailing site (P.O.Box, etc.) I could send this to you. You've provided us with so much interesting in site I would be glad to send this to you.

Thanks. Getting them made in a large quantity would mean I'd have to invest in a large number (to keep costs down) and send them out. That just can't happen with my job and KZhead.
I've been set straight about Wikipedia. For years, I thought it was like Encyclopedia Britannica and I could trust it as a source of any information. Come to think of it, when I was in grade school around 60 years ago, my teachers insisted we don't fully rely on the Encyclopedia, but get to the library for further reading.
Some stuff is spot on, other stuff is not. That's why you have to poke around and look for the source of the info.
ive added that i/we have some connections to the old west an stories. family friend, Richard Erdoes, got leads from mom to Lakota Oral stories from the old women she recorded for college text books we have. of books i see you have one of his. Saloons of the old west.

Police found a large number of dead crows on the A251 just outside Ashford yesterday morning, and there was concern that they may have died from Bird Flu... A pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and it's been confirmed the problem was not Bird Flu. The cause of death appeared to be from vehicular impacts. However, during analysis, it was noted that varying colors of paints appeared on the bird's beaks and claws. By analysing this paint residue, it was found that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with lorries, while only 2% were killed by cars. Ornithological Behaviorists wondered if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentages of lorry kills versus car kills. They quickly concluded that when crows eat road kill, they always have a look-out crow to warn of danger. They discovered that while all the look-out crows could shout "Cah", not a single one could shout "Lorry".
