Mathis had an interesting strategy here. Mike was not very good when real close up, shoulder to shoulder, and he was pretty passive when clinched - these were the two biggest holes in his game his entire career. Mike was a mid-range demon (and non-existent at long range because he was a heavyweight with the height and reach of a middleweight). So, instead of trying to fight from long range, Mathis aimed to fight the entire fight shoulder to shoulder. When he got caught and knocked out was when Mike made a bit of space. Interesting idea though. Somewhat like what Holyfield did, but Holyfield used a lot more clinching (and also traded plenty at mid range, because he had the iron chin needed to do that).
I photographed the fight and it was ugly but Mathis used a helpful strategy to stay in Tyson's grill and keep the bout going longer than most.

It was a fast count but he was going to get Destroyed any ways Mike Tyson was on another level in these years
Tyson was too good of a finisher during this era. If he got you hurt, it was over. Ref just saved Mathis from getting knocked down again.
