Weighing in at about 9,000 pounds, my Sister, Bubbles, at a young 37 years old, is the most interactive African elephant in North America.
My father Doc Antle rescued her in the early 1980s, when her wild herd was killed for their ivory. Bubbles was one of the lucky few that survived. Between 1970 and 1989, African elephant populations were halved as legal “regulated” trade in ivory enabled laundering of illegal ivory from poached elephants.
Even after the ban in 1989, more than 33,000 wild elephants are still killed each year.

I had MY OWN blessed pachie experience, many years ago, at the now-defunct Marine World/Africa U.S.A. in Vallejo, California. I got to ride an African Cow, and she was so gentle and sweet, that I thanked her after the ride. I hugged her the best that I could, talking softly all the time to her. She rested that heavy trunk on my shoulder for a spell, until her handler shooed me away; I think he was JEALOUS(Laughs!!)!! I even tried there, to get close to a big Flying Fox bat, that was part of a presentation, but that handler shooed me away, too. Foxies have such sweet faces, too. This bat was huge, a body very much the size of a very small housecat.
