I bought a crash damaged 2019 BMW M5 Competition from a mechanic that decided not to carry on with the repair after he found some pretty serious chassis damage. But if i can repair and restore the BMW M5 for around £10,000 then im on to a winner!

  • as a bbody tech i can tell you for a fact that the tower has moved as well as the whole front has probably shifted to the right, i love the fact that you are rebuilding it but take it to a shop so they can measure it and so they can fix the structural damage, the car is not bad at all i have repaired way worse but it takes years of practice to know how to do it properly and for all others that are watching this content please do not attempt to fix structural damage unless you are qualified to do so and also you have the right tools

    • Fully agree, worked in an insurance approved body shop and we did jobs like this all the time, anything structural you need to get it on a jig and get all the location pegs spot on. Got to think of future owners, if something happens and this video is on KZhead you have just proved to be guilty and will get locked up.

  • For reference mat boats used to be riveted together and planes still are, it gives the ability to flex while still being strong, top tip for doing the strut, take photos or a video of the whole removal process taking notice of the points where the bonding glue is used because you'll probably find it's not one continuous seam. Hope you find that useful. Good luck.

  • Hey Mat, as a current F90 M5 comp owner ( which also happens to be Donnington Grey) this rebuild will be of a specific interest to me. The M5 is an incredible car, and in standard spec will destroy most cars on the road and embarrass some super car owners all in the comfort of a 5 seater saloon with golf clubs in the boot. I have been a subscriber to your channel for some time now and know how you like to add your own little mod touches to your builds so I will be interested to see what mods you have planned for this, some upgraded LCI headlights & tail lights is a good starting point with maybe a stage 1 or 2 tune, but these cars already put out masses of power. I am more than happy to provide my car as a reference for any checks or measurements you would like to do. Keep up the incredible work with the channel, the content is right on the money, this is the only channel i sunscribe too and don't know where you find the time to be honest. Merry Christmas to you and your team and looking forward to the next instalment in the M5 rebuild

  • Having 30 years exp. as a panel beater and over 12 years as a Senior ATA panel repair technician, measuring and pulling is the easy bit ( on a jig of course ). The problem is not having the correct Thatcham researched repair methods, correct structural adhesive, self piercing rivets and blind rivets to attach the strut top to; not to mention the specialised tooling required. Oh yeah you will find there is no welding involved as repair methods used are cold repair techniques for this kind of work, Including all the front flitch and headlamp panel area. Very familiar with this repair method, do yourself a favour and source this out to someone who has the correct resources, for a successful, structurally sound repair. ... great content, keep up the good work👍🏼

  • An incredible job so far. The sheer complexity and compactness of the engine bay (I hope photos of how it's all put together were made along the way). That being said, BMW have some experience of this, having just looked up close at the BMW Focke Wolf 190A radial engine at the Science Museum (London) from 1942, they've had some experience of producing tons of power from a complex compact engine.

  • Love what you’re doing, just my opinion, may be an idea to get a shop to see if they could repair the strut cutting and welding it. That casting will be bonded to give good shear performance then self pierce riveted (SPR) to give better CT and peel performance known as hybrid bonding. If you managed to separate them you would struggle to join a new one the same way, an optimal bond thickness (probably 0.3mm) for the adhesive should be met and then you’d have to guess the rivet and die combination and input settings for the SPR, doubt BMW would provide them, on top of that, the handheld setting tools for repair work have a very small C frame that will never reach inside that casting, in production they use large tools on robot arms with large C frames. Could always use an alternative to SPR like nuts and bolts, I’m sure you’ll come up with a good solution, keep it up 👍

    • I agree with Lewis. There is so little damage to the tower, and not really at a critical place. I would buy a used tower, cut out the section you need and have a qualified aluminum welder graft it in place. All of the areas with seam sealer seem to be intact, those are the most critical, so why take a chance of doing more damage than good? Also, I agree, this need to be put on a frame rack and check the chassis before you start to assemble.

  • Thank you fort he upload Mat! Very entertaining! Lots of upgrades that you can do e.g. new fuel lines: air intakes; turbos, choice is yours but as you will enjoy this ride & then sell it you might as well take it to the next level. I expect an additional 100HP to be added from a stage one upgrade. Peace & Love!!!

  • Your optimism levels are just not normal. Which is a good thing! That BM is crazy complicated but you will definitely fix it. Happy Christmas, looking forward to another year of your adventures in, under, and around broken boy toys. 👍

  • I'd say you've done an amazing job so far and most of it you'll defo be able to take your time and work out yourself but the strut turret, I'd defo get that done by a professional with the right experience and gear. A car like that needs to be spot on

  • Who else agrees that this bmw should be totally blacked out ghosted style! Darkest tint possible, black gloss alloys, carbon wing, splitter and diffuser, sick halo headlights, just a mean ghosted bmw with a mad exhaust 🤙🤙

  • When i take my projects apart in any greater depth, where i have literally hundreds of, nuts and bolts and fasteners and clips to deal with, i usually use a cataloguing system, essentially, each part that comes off, gets a piece of tape on it, marking a number of the part on it and a easygrip-bag labelled with the same number and all the related nuts and bolts go into that baggy. All those bags go into a adequate size cardboard box in the order they came out and i have a magic marker whiteboard where i log the order of the main parts coming out. For very complex stuff, i also take a photo with my phone camera (to know how some plugs and pipes and fittings puzzle together) so that when it's time to re-assemble, i can just work backwards in the order of how i took stuff apart. It's extra work and time spent, but, i have always had an easy job of it, because it takes a lot of guesswork out of the process later on.

  • Seeing the front end like it was when you bought it, makes me so anxious. It looks like it would be easier to bring world peace. But i'll be following and will be checking out previous projects.

  • As a mecanic,This car is not safe for driving again you can't change the tower to exact fabric specification, this tower is laser bonding by a robot in factory, this is structural bonding don't play with that ✌️
