  • If you are considering doing this yourself, take note that this guy has a full garage with every kind of tool in it, and a staff of guy's whose labor he is not including in his accounting of the cost of this repair. Labor at a regular mechanic starts at $100/hr at a really really cheap place. The diagnostic tools he is using can cost thousands of dollars, not to mention the lift, engine hoist, and all of the other tools. If you don't have all of those things at your disposal it seems like it would definitely be cheaper to just buy a car that wasn't crashed. I'm pretty sure the reason it was at auction in the first place is because the insurance appraiser had already determined that it was cheaper to just buy another car than it would be to repair this one and those people are not stupid. They are the best in the world at estimating repair cost. On top of that is the fact that this car has lost a ton of value already because of the status of its title. This car was totaled and therefore has a salvage title. It doesn't matter how perfect the repair is, or even that it's been upgraded. The car will never be as valuable as an identical car that wasn't salvaged. Just some things to keep in mind for guys who are getting inspired to get their own project cars. Be realistic, don't make an emotional purchase.

    • Cheap places starting mechanics out at $100 an hour?

      @fluffythenut4615@fluffythenut46154 ай бұрын
    • @@fluffythenut4615 No. Cheap mechanic shop that charge $100/hr minimum, for labor. It does not start its mechanics at $100/hr wage. It charges its customers minimum of $100/hr to do fix their cars but pays its mechanics around $25/hr to fix the customers cars.

I was a BMW stealership tech in the beginning half of my career, and once you over heated one of those pretty good... well... it was a mess. • Hey Matt, I’m 67 years old and I used to fix cars. My first was 54 Chevy and I’ve had seven or eight cars in my life but you are my hero. You and Chris the thing I do in the morning when I get up check KZhead to see if you’ve dropped any videos you and Chris, and a few others absolutely amaze me at your ability to fix these cars I’m so jealous and I wish I was younger so I could go to school and learn the things that you do. I know it’s DIY but you guys still amaze me I know you use the Internet a lot and they didn’t have that when I was a kid at 16 with a 54 Chevy, I have a 325 Mercedes all these problems and I’m disabled mentally they say I have dementia so I can’t fix my car and I can’t afford to fix it. I wish I could find one of you guys to help me. I know you can’t in England but maybe someone in America love you guys😅😅❤😅

I was a mechanic between 1987 to 1992 when cars were very different. Not only did I learn a lot about how my own car works and the price of parts but just how much technology has moved on. Its very unusual to find a mechanical video like this, that's so well filmed & produced. I already have the rear carbon diffuser, boot spoiler and front splitter but definitely need the side skirts and side attachments for the front splitter, just adds to the already awesome look of the car. All in all, 10 outta 10 for your efforts here on the quality of repair, video and patience when things never went your way. Well done lads!!

This was an awesome episode..the M5 is one of my Dream cars... But I know for sure after watching this that my next BMW will be an electric one... I have an F30 and I can only imagine the headaches all those sensors and coolant systems give... Awesome job!

  • Hi Matt, watched for a good while more or less since you started on KZhead! I’m truly amazed at your tenacity and belief that you have doing the cars that you do! Nothing fazes you when you get stuck you ask more than not you work through all the problems not only but you have a fantastic dad and a girlfriend you love who likes what you do without any moaning or arguing you’re one lucky lad!!! Along with your success you’ve been welcomed all over the World Mainly your adventures to the USA making good friends who you can rely on!!! Not that your friends here aren’t the same as those over the pond! If you lived closer I would certainly make a call on your premises as long as I got an invite I wouldn’t have it any other way! Needless to say it’s not going to happen! I watch the lads on YCR doing tour other BMW what a wreck! Steve and Ryan are spot on like you they have my admiration for the fine work they do! I will now carry on watching you Finnish the v8 BM another fine job you’re doing if I may say so? Keep doing what you are doing Mat it’s entertainment from start to finish! ❤

  • one friendly piece of advice when youre rivet bonding, the glue is also the corrosion protection so it is good practice to brush a layer on both surfaces covering all the bare metal that will be covered up by the new panel. then you can run a light bead and install. cheers!

      @johnknudsen9660@johnknudsen9660Ай бұрын
    • @@johnknudsen9660 aluminium still corrodes. Not as quick since the corrosion sticks to the metal and doesn't swell like rust, but metal seams are good at collecting moisture and dirt that accelerates corrosion. Since I'm posting, I might as well say that it's astonishing that Matt saw this and thought "yeah. I can fix that up." I saw it in the opening scene and I thought it was good for nothing more than scrap. I guess that's why I'm not a car repairer!

I personally don't think it was 'worth' it in the end but the knowledge that you gained and seeing you learn was definately worth it. You fixed the car cosmetically as well and thats a bonus. I think if it was just for the car probably not but if you take in everything that youve learned and done it was well worth it. I love how you are so brilliantly positive over everything. Anyway, keep it up.

    • I agree - the video was really entertaining and hopefully provides income for the poster but definitely not worth it. The comparisons with other M5 prices are misleading. There is a Cat-S 2019 M5 Competion on Autorader at the moment. Low mileage, repaired, etc. Price £43K - so apart from the entertainment value, you could have saved all the time and effort on the repairs and gone straight to the end just by buying one.

I imagine the insurance companies add a top up on premiums, on what is already pretty pricy to insure, but with the way it turned out in the end, I’m sure its worth it. Lucky winner. I may be just a smudge jealous. Apart from the car, the video looks as professional as anything on mainstream tv. Nice genuine personality and good presenter. Liked and subscribed.
