I just rebuilt my wrecked Mclaren 720s but then ran into some more issues after fitting the alloys. The car started to smoke, then completely cut out. We couldnt solve the issue and had to take it to mclaren themselves to fix it. After that @BenCollinsDrives took the 720s for a run around the track but it all ended badly as we tried to push him a little too hard.

Had to do the same on a friend's Skoda Octavia VRS. That's how things are going to be forward... ECU's crap out, the amount of flash memory they incorporated in to every module is bound to get errors and fuck up.

Fair play to Mclaren for letting you into their workshops and allowing filming, not to mention the very professional tech - cost an arm and a leg mind but not being able to DIY on software is their key to retaining business 😮

@@Tjescoo I meant "not being able to" [DIY] 😉 It's [relatively] easy to get hold of diagnostic tools for reading/clearing codes etc but anything that needs a firmware update like the controllers will definitely not be in the public domain ime so invariably it means a usually expensive trip to the (st)ealers for those types of issues...and to be fair they didn't say "no" based on the fact that it is now effectively one car made from two - you can imagine the disdain from other OEMs (ahem!)

Apparently given all the peculiar idiosyncrasies, they look for the most unnecessarily complex way to do everything to decrease simplicity and increase unreliability to the extreme.
It's just as bad in my daily Volvo. I've retrofitted a dipstick, which was simple, cheap, and worth the money.

That's how pretty much all modern dry sump cars work though, my M5 does the same (though you don't have to hold the throttle) The car needs to work out the total oil capacity (so there will be oil in the masses of pipework, 2 pumps and the oil cooler as well, hence why it has to cycle it at a known temperature to calculate the exact quantity)

Audi does the same on RS Models ... no dip stick anymore. Everything is electric and the worst part is the car needs to be warm and needs to run for 3 Minutes when reading out the oil level. This was driving me crazy when doing a oil change. You either fill in what Audi Says and hope its enough/not too much, or you will be in the worst case driving with a low oil level until it can read it properly. Bad thing is they doing this since 2010 already and not since 4-5 years like on this mclaren.
McLarens are one of the worst first super cars, every time they have a fault you have to send them back to McLaren.

I am quite new to the channel but it’s refreshing to see such friendships, family and something positive. Great content. For the oil level, since nothing has a dipstick and no more ‘fill to spill’ I am not sure I would have relied on draining a bit out - even on dry sump. I think I would drain it all and then put back in a known measured quantity - but then again I would never have undertaken a rebuild like that! Would love to know how many person hours in total you spent on it as well as the cost of parts - not for cost but out of curiosity! Thanks for such an interesting an uplifting positive engaging channel.

If I spin out in a McLaren to the point it has rocks coming out from the door, I'm also saying I crashed a McLaren
720s has rocks coming out of the door from just driving around due to the intake design. Crash is when something is broken. Wrong track for the car and wrong tires, he really didn‘t have much grip.

Service cost at McLaren was better than expected. Amazing work with computers these days... with electronic systems. You had me on the edge of my seat with the stig 😂😂😂😂😂 cheeky bugger I thought I was gunna be totally screwed..... thankgoodness it wasn't. Thanks Mat for another awesome upload.

The 4WD on that Lambo is a cheat code. The track layout wasn't helping either, but I was pretty sure you'd take it in the 720, in the dry. It doesn't matter though, because the build is a great accomplishment, and the end result is stunning. Well done.

Love the videos Mat, you can defo handle a car if you’re getting close to The Stigs lap times. I’m not sure if you manage to read comments but I’ll pop this here. I’d love to see you make a video / videos on the part of car performance that seems to get overlooked. Weight reduction. Gordon Murray and Colin Chapman both huge advocates on the benefits. Infact I think Gordon Murray’s car collection doesn’t have any cars over a tonne. You’ll also love the feel of driving a pure lightweight RW drive car, no PS…. Maybe even no ABS 🫣 I’ve a MK1 MX5 with a Flyin Miata Turbo kit, it’s a bit of a dog TBH but I do love tracking and hill climbing it. Once you drive a car with so much feel in the steering it’s hard for me to go back.

I've done quite a few trackdays at Teeside in various track cars and your gonna need 4wd with cars running that much power to compete with the Lambo. Its a pretty slippy surface when it's cold or damp.

That was some headscratching to solve the "security" issue. Nicely done, and that McLaren tech sure was a cool dude! As for the track part, I think it's confusing that the GT3 wouldn't be faster than the McLaren, since it's more built for the track and in capable hands can do some crazy stuff. I would've loved to see you guys both do times on both of the cars, would give a better idea of your ability differences. Have you considered, when tracking cars, that you could wear helmets? I was very surprised a professional driver didn't bring one for safety.

Cool man I live just down the road from the track and have been karting on there a few times, was it the full International Circuit that you did, that corner that the Stig came off on can be tricky, but the sweeping banked corner you can take flat out in one of their karts at 70mph

On a short track like this 4wd is a big advantage, maybe you could have dropped the pressure on the tires a little bit to gain more grip but overall it won't do wonders, great content btw!

anxious after a few seconds of watching. one of the ways excess oil 'finds its own way out' is via an oil seal or multiple seals maybe (!)
