The mechanic who bought this BMW M5 Competiton before me decided not to fix it after finding structural damage to the strut tower. I then bought it from him and attempted to fix it myself. In the previous video i replaced the strut tower despite BMW not being able to give us any help or advise on how to do it. But now that its replace theres even more damage to repair & there's one issue which arrises with the 2019 M5 which wasn't there when i bought it.

I was wondering if you let left the lever underneath engaged to put it in neutral on the bell housing. You probably checked, but just a thought. Looking forward to the rest of the video.
I was thinking the same
Yeah, good call
Nope it’s stuck in park 🥲 the lever underneath was to pull it in neutral and I’ve pulled th zip ties off
Hi Aaron (zollotech ) I am following your channel to , didn’t know u like cars to. It is so satisfying to watch Mat. U guys keep up whit a great work. See u guys around. 😎😎😎
Hi @zollotech I’m a fan!
The only downside about mats videos. They are just not long enough could watch this guy all day 🔥🔥🔥
100%!!! 🤜🤛
I'll second that. Was a balsey move to start that car. £622 for an intake manifold is insane, just shows you why us mere mortals shouldn't run an M5 😁
@@neildodsworth48 exactly mate, I struggle to run my 330D most days
Agreed, I'm watching this one again.
He should start making 1 hour videos😂
Hey Mat, I have some experience working on BMWs and would like to help you diagnose, here are some ideas to start: - The amount of points you bled the brake system from; how many? Though I'm unsure of F90s specifically, from what I've seen on an F10 M5, you need to bleed each corner from two seperate holes: one to bleed the inside pistons, one for the outside pistons. - Try compressing each piston fully while bleeding it, this should help get trapped air out. - Some specs of the newer BMWs lock out the gear lever if the driver door is open, sometimes even if just the seatbelt is off. Due to the airbag system and the restraint system being tightly connected, I suspect there's a slim chance airbag errors could lock you out if it's one of the cars that check if the seatbelt is off. It's unlikely but certainly a possibility i guess - Pump the brake pedal during ABS bleeding - I can hook you up with a very recent & clean version of ISTA if you want to try the ABS bleeding procedure with that. cheers
❤
Same with my f80, me and my mate couldn’t figure it out 😅
This guy has a positive attitude... although things are going as hell.. he is still happy and not giving up. this guy will go far in his career.
I’ve had the same problem changing brake fluid on a couple of BMW’s, it was air trapped behind the calliper pistons. I had to push the calliper pistons back with the bleed valves open to remove the air, also try pumping the pedal at the same time as the diagnostic tool is working the abs pump, this worked for me

I think you should give this one to your dad when your finished. He deserves it for all his hard work.
And an M5 is such a dad -type of car 😂
Are you mats dad
@@ToukoK well, i am a dad, and i would love to have it 😁
@@lewisrichardson8556 I am your dad , buy me a m5
@@ToukoK my dad used to own an e34 m5 when they were new, so yeah, these are perfect dad cars!
This M5 series is golden, Congrats on 1 million. Looking forward to the next episode already!!
I’m with you dude 😎
We do this bleeding procedure in work with vans, you have to connect a pressure bleeder to the brake fluid reservoir with atleast 1.5 bar of pressure, and bleed each corner with the computer while someone pumps the pedal, you need someone to pump it to help physically push the fluid out of the abs pump as it activates the solenoid valves internally, hope this helps matt 👌
seeing matt's face lighten up when he first started it up, shows how much hard work he really put into this build, such a huge accomplishment, so proud of you man!
I was thinking the same as you 😂😂😂 i loved how honest his face with his work ❤❤
You have become one of my favorite youtubers so quickly. I have binged all your series and it has inspired me so much.
Good on you Mat
omg same

You’ve come an unbelievably long way, I remember your early videos. You should be really proud of yourself and what you’ve achieved. 1 million subs is no joke!!
Smacking the maltesers away, getting your mrs to check the headlights are working, smiling and staying positive through every issue - absolutely love your channel and videos. Cant wait to see this project finished.
Your dad is an absolute legend, I laughed it loud when he told you the brakes still didn't work. We need more of matts dad.
Congratulations for 1M Subscribers Mat! Still is hard to believe not even 3 years ago I was watching your videos and you had less than 80K Subscribers! What an absolute milestone! Carry on grind and making our days and we are always there for you!
Man I just stumbled upon this channel and I'm loving the series.. you've so much positive energy I even watched the sponsored part 😂 Stay blessed brother ❤
Man seeing your emotions at 14:20 is what it's all about. You're such an awesome dude that's always so down to earth and hard working. You deserve all the success you have and more man! Really really enjoy watching your content and they're all amazing and congratulations on your 1M subs!!
There are 2 reasons I'm so HAPPY right now. 1. You hit 1 Million subscribers! Congrats Mat. Been on the ride since 250k! 2. I'm watching a 23min upload on the BMW. What a way to end the day.
I agree
we need more of your dad , droping a golden knowledge, btw Mat congrats on 1MIL.
Your dads smile while works with you is priceless. Way to go Mat hope good things come your way always!
Check to see if the master cylinder piston is not stuck inside the base of the master cylinder, I have experienced this if the brake pedal was pushed with calipers removed or no fluid, it may not have a return spring in the master to push it back, it's easy to tell if the pedal has little to no resistance at all. Worth a shot! Loving your videos bringing these beasts back to life!
Mat's face when he started the car was like a 6yr old seeing their presents at Christmas. Doing what you love, with your Dad, girlfriend and your mates and getting paid for it. Yes Mat, you did make the right choice, boy from Leicester done good. Congrats on the 1M subs and don't ever lose your enthusiasm, its so infectious!
Congratulations on reaching 1M of subscribers, you deserve it! Thanks for the inspiration and for demonstation that the Hard Work Beats Talent.
He should buy a BMW 1m to build and keep with a sick wrap just for that
When bleeding brakes that have been apart like this I found using a different colour fluid helped me track when new fluid was pushed through, ATE Super Blue was fab for this and you could alternate from yellow to blue each service. Also an Eezibleed kit is good for pressurising the system, I use about 25psi. You need decent pressure behind it. The computer is pulsing the ABS solenoids to try and push the fluid (and air) through so having pressure in from the top assists this.
Unbelieable how positive and full of energ thid guy is. Even watching sponsored part is hilarious😃
A treat to see you and your Dad working together and having a great time. Memories are made from this!
Usually you need to have a pressure bleeder regulated to 2 - 3 bar and use the diagnostic equipment to activate the ABS pump valves and someone sat in the car pressing the brake pedal all at the same time and you need to start at the furthest wheel away from the brake master cylinder. Love the vids Mat just wish they were uploaded every day lol
I’ve done this method a few times and it was the only way that worked
Like so that mat sees it
This is the official mercedes benz way on some of their cars, pressure bleeder set to 2-3 bar, bleed nipple open, keep pumping the pedal with the nipple open, all of a sudden you get extra air bubbles out
I am not a car guy, but this channel is surprisingly entertaining. Keep it up Mat!
Be careful as the OPFs are located in the link pipe of the exhaust system and not in downpipes on M5 F90. If you intend to replace the downpipe only, you will loose the pressure connection and keep the filters, which may cause some damage.
Mat I've had this issue before on my BMW X5. Had to use a pressure bleeder to provide pressure and fresh fluid, then using the computer activate the ABS pump. Repeated the same thing about 3 times and then brake pedal was back.
ABS modules are bastards
Gunsons ezi bleed. 20 quid. How can Mat not know this by now. Bloody Cowboy.
I was the same with my X5, turns out it's the same on all BMW's. There's lots of KZhead clips of this procedure. That's how I done mine, bought the software for my laptop to do the electric pump side of it.
Coming from a guy that grew up in a body shop, has rebuilt many cars and enjoyed them, I tip my hat to Mat for taking this passion that many of us share to the next level. WISH I WOULD HAVE DONE THIS!! :) Maybe double check the routing of that belt...
I totally enjoy watch Mat rebuild any vehicle. He's saw exciting and documented when it comes to the rebuilds process! Great Job all the time.
that didn't feel like 23mins at all. it felt like 2mins and i just can't get enough of your vids. great passion!!!
This boy is getting better and better 💪 Much respect from Finland 🇫🇮
2 things to think about for you mat. My bmw won't let you put it in gear when the door is open and I also read once that some cars are designed so the pedals collapse in a collision so you don't smash your feet/ankles 👍🏻
🤞👌💯
How annoyed would he be if it was just an open door that stopped the car going into gear 🙂
@@ViszlaBoss you can put these cars into gear with the door open. You have to keep a little brake pressure applied as you idle around. If you just come off the brake like your pulling away it’ll go back into gear thinking you fell out or some shit lol. Mine does it all the time when moving cars around.
doing all of that witouth proper instructions and knowledge is actually amazing.
On BMs if you empty the overflow reservoir and allow air into the abs sensor / master cylinder it has to be refilled by BMW using a specialist high pressure system. In the Haynes manual it warns you about this if you're doing the brake bleed. You've got to make sure the reservoir is always full. Welcome to working on BMs! Great video as usual Mat, your old man is a legend as well. Congrats on the million subs too. Well deserved. Love these videos.
I didn't even know I was interested in car rebuilds until I found this channel.
Mat, I just wanted to say thank you for your videos! I have been having probably the worst time in my life for the last 10-11 weeks and only came across your channel during this. Your energy and enthusiasm in your videos has cheered me up during some really 'dark' days. Thankyou.
Hope everything works out for you mate 🙏

Your sponsors must love you! You are one of the few youtubers that actually not make me skip the sponsor part :)
Congratulations on the 1M mat!! You definitely deserve this feat.
but man mad respect for how you do this without ever having worked on a bmw, the amount of wires on top of the engine gave me anxiaty
You are sensational to watch, I love how excited you get when you figure something out and it works makes me exited as well feeling that I am part of the team, I find myself high fiving the screen. thank you for your awesome content and videos! Cheers mate from Boston!
You need a pressure bleeder and then do the test again because it needs to have pressure from the master cylinder😊
Wasn't there like a safety feature on some cars which when crashing the car loosens the brake pedal so your leg is not under pressure.
@@djkucuk good thinking... 🧐
@@djkucuk I had a mk4 golf that happened on
Possibly, my thoughts was not enough pressure going through the abs module as had the same problem with Corsa vxr, Matt has to check fault codes to make sure it doesn’t have a fault
@@djkucuk that’s what I thought mate

Great to hear your Dad's laugh. Priceless memories in the making.
It won't go in gear if the drivers door is open, for safety reasons. If its in drive and you open the door it will automatically go into parking . Great work again.
My dad before he passed away bought a new car, and the things he had to do to get it started. Door shut, seat belt on through him multiple times.

"Hannah, just see if the headlights work" - brilliant! Love this mix of education, suspense and humour in your vids, Mat x
Watching you and your following grow like it has is absolutely crazy! I'm proud of you Matt! I can't comprehend how happy you must be
Try a pressure bleeder and use around 28-30psi. I find you have to use higher than normal pressure on the bigger brakes to get a pedal but this should let you shift into gear. Absolutely love the videos 👍👍
Every follower is pulling for you man! Love your ambition and determination. This stuff will inspire a lot of people watching to commit to whatever they're into.
I love your hard work and pure optimism on every build. Keep going Mat

Great to see it all moving forward... would like to see a little more how you go... when replacing the broken electrical contacts. Thanks for this lovely video
Completely inspired me to start my first project a 2006 Mercedes Benz S500 so excited to start the rebuild of it!
I really did not want you to start it, but holy moly when it started up that was the most exciting moment so far on this repair! I'm having a great time watching your videos mate.
ISTA or IMPA is required - I work on BMW's and thet ABS module once it got air in is a beeatch ....start with the wheel FURTHEST from ABS unit and then work closer to the ABS unit. The diag software will indicate to press and hold the brake peddle etc.
Enjoy the video? Oh yes I did! Fact is,I have been on the lookout for this one eager to learn what happened since you removed the engine. Can't seem to get enough of the exuberance, camaraderie and sheer motivation, expertise shown by the crew, including your wife and dad.Awaiting next video, car fan,Kenya.
Was a pleasure to see how happy you were on that M5 first start haha and Congrats on 1 million!! Love following your journey :)
Hey Mat, you’ve got to replace the airbags first and recode the sensors, then the brakes will work @matarmstrong
Seriously? (serious question, I do not know so I say that not in a ashole manner just to clarify)
Ah the good old "you've been in an accident so we're taking away your braking privileges"
No
No this is not true. Braking is mechanical worth hydraulic assist. To put it differently if you remove the battery from your car, you won't be able to press the brake to the floor like Matt did.
nope, he just have to put is autel go in brake menu and purge properly from there but he think it's a 90' car so...... and anyway.. this have nothing to do with the brake switch the gearbox is getting its signal from so xD
Congrats on 1M subscribers Mat......major milestone and reward for all your effort. Well done.
Congratulations Mat on achieving 1 million subscribers! You truly deserve it! I'm seeing a 950hp M5 in the distance future. Fit LCI taillights as well. It was well worth seeing you progressing on from chilling at Indoor BMX park to rebuilding monstrous cars. Keep it up ;)

Your “can do attitude” blows my mind. I’d have given up a long time ago, not to talk about the anxiety that would have developed after unsuccessfully trying to fix it first time round. Keep up the fantastic work. You’re a shining light to us all budding amateur drive way mechanics. 😆🙏
Fantastic build series Mat. Your skills never cease to amaze me with these builds. Such an overly engineered car these Bmw's. Enjoying the series. 😀
Massive congratulations on hitting the milestone, been watching from day one. Keep up the good work 👏
Love the channel, love watching you and you dad build some memories on the cars. ❤
Hi Mat, when the abs starts to work (strange noise like a small kompressor) bleeding you need to push (pump) the brake pedal - thats the way to get all the air out of the abs system.
Matt, your Dad is a legend. He deserves all the praise he is getting.
I really love this series. Smashing it mate. 🙌
Matt, you can get a non return valve (aka one man brake bleed kit) to put over each bleed nipple. Start with the rear wheels first, then move to the front. Because air has become trapped in the ABS module I think you’ll need a pressure bleeder to force the brake fluid through the ABS module under pressure. Have someone topping up the level in the reservoir as required. Someone else pumping the brake peddle and a 3rd person checking the tube connected to the non return valve. Make sure you put fresh fluid back in not the old stuff. But before trying to drive it, replace all the airbags and anything else that got damaged. Clear all the codes and it should be good to go. BMW’s are fussy with their interlinked systems. If it detects safety issues it won’t let you drive Good luck dude🤞
Start the vehicle with the park brake on and crack each individual caliper bleeder in the appropriate sequence. These cars use and electric shoe brake in the rear when the engine is shut down, however with the engine running, using the abs pump it applies hydraulic pressure to all 4 disc calipers. Used this technique to flush fluid on my 2012 X5 5.0iX
Amazing what you can do with a positive attitude, and taking things 'bite sized' chunks at a time! Love your man, keep it up!! 🙏👌💪
such a bold project, I am sure you'll figure it out. great job, great progress. especially like the 3 finger wheel alignment check on a 600 bhp car 😀
It's a long shot but much like your theory of the bonnet being open, my beemer doesn't let me put it into gear when the door is open or my seat belt isn't on if I remember correctly. Great progress so far, I can't believe how far you've got in so little time!
yeah roll protection.
Mine the same
Same i have a 2022 2 gran coupe and it does not go in gear with the door open
Than it usually shows that in the instrument cluster.

Congrats on the 1m subs. I found you by accident when you had the Q5 and have watched you since. I’ve given up with some other KZheadrs as they get quite samey but your vids are always great to watch and honest. Plus yours are inspirational whilst being down to earth still. Keep up the good work Mat!
Hahahaha the smack away of the malteasers was way funnier than it should have been

P.N.L M-A-GANG 🙋💯🤞🤝
Bench bleed the master cyl (off car in a vise). Then bleed system 👌 Hope it helps
The only negative in watching Mats videos, is the attention to cleanliness. He has the engine out and exposed and could be cleaned at most difficult areas, cleaning it will be satisfying .
This man needs a Netflix show, not long finished your C63 project, enjoying this one too. Keep up the good content 👍🏻
whenever mat does a BMW rebuild I get goosebumps well done Mat another epic video 👏👏👏 that look when the car started priceless you should definitely have more videos with ur dad posted
20:34 My 2001 Renault Clio, with ABS, needs to do this procedure. It is pretty normal whenever ABS is present, and there was a deep intervention in the system - like a disruption in the brake fluid line.
@MattArmstrong I worked in a garage for a few years and we had this issue come up on an M5 where the brake pedal was recessing down to the floor. We found it was the master cylinder that was faulting. A replacement was put in and 4 new brake pads were added but before they were added, they were put onto another M5 and were bedded. Air in the lines should give you a 'softer braking' feel, a worn or bust MC will give you a sinking feeling which Is what you're experiencing by the looks of it. I'd eliminate the ABS pump from being the issue as it's correctly bleeding the lines. May be worth taking a close look at your master cylinder and seeing if there's anything visible. You can pick them up second hand for anywhere between £60 - £400
Congrats on 1m subs Mat, you're doing great. Keep up the awesome video's!
Just a thought Mat, have you checked to see if the master cylinder piston is actually being pushed by the brake pedal. The connecting pin could have failed in the crash. I had a similar issue years ago, and the clevis pin was actually missing in the end.
But it was pumping fluid out on first bleed.
I've stood for 20 minutes before staring at a plug tryna work out where it goes after swapping an engine, it happens to me all the time man 😂 but like you said they only go one way and all just kinda fall back in the right place best thing is not to worry or stress 👍 hearing that last plug click is almost as satisfying as hearing the car fire back up again 💯
I changed the clutch box on my mustang once, and the clutch was supposed to be self priming. I pumped and pumped and nothing. Drove it home from work with no clutch hahaha. Went on youtube and found that the technique was to hold the pedal down completely and slide off the side so that it springs back on it's own and creates a bit of a vacuum. Did that a bunch and it primed itself in no time. I doubt this has any application to brakes... but anytime you're pumping something, instead of using your foot to let it come back, try that method and it will work quicker and create that suction.
Very clever indeed , probably better than a qualified mechanic , natural well done .
