I bought a crash damaged 2019 BMW M5 Competition from a mechanic who decided not to fix it after finding some structural damage along with the rest of the damage. After some thought i decided to try and fix this myself. But can this car be rebuilt and restored by a DIYer like myself?

I always strived to gain my Fathers approval but sadly I felt that I didn't ever get it although in his last few years I think we bonded a little by giving him updates on his beloved football team but he never understood my love for cars and detailing and driving. • Next time you do the sealing of the gaps, mask off the areas as best as you can with tape, apply the sealant, and then using an old bank card or something similar, moving the card in an up and then down forward motion thin the sealant layer. It will also give a similar and more uniform pattern. Then remove the tape and wait to dry. Should then be a more uniform result

Paint job was 11/10 he should be feeling proud on that. Now if I were you I would take this opportunity to clean, polish and seal coat entire engine bay so it never reveals a fresh paint unless someone points out and match the seals to feel where the repairs had been carried. • The thing I really like and appreciate with matt and the crew is that you are so confident and just with the small amount of repairs I've done on my Merc's I found that I was just more confident and got stuck in I would do a lot more instead of paying others. For example I had all the instructions from Mercedes to replace oil cooler seals. A common fault with ML's and GL's of a certain age but I just got intimidated by what had to come off once I looked at it all. I started then put back what I had taken off and it wasn't much admittedly but I let my nerves get the better of me. This was after I had worked on the transfer case chain with removal of the drive shaft and 3 different types of hex bolts and allen key fixings. Just a matter of overcoming nerves and confidence. Keep going Matt. I know you will

  • I’ve repaired lots of cars. Everything you’ve done was bang on, so congrats to you. I was really pleased to see you used all the panel bond before the nozzle went hard! Seam sealer.. I always use masking tape on both sides of where I want it, and after applying it I use a paint brush to get that look. Then peel back the masking to get the straight lines. Congrats again, and keep going!

  • Considering the extent of the damage, you made it look really easy. Don't be hard on yourself about the sealant, a robot did the original, no human can match that accuracy. Great job, keep up the good work! Can't wait to see you clean up the lump and plop it back in! My favourite car content on YT!

  • Just a slightly useful tip, not advisable to all applications, but often you can bush down panel bond with a small paint brush. This will provide a cleaner looking finish, while ensuring the panel bond goes on evenly. You can also use a paint stick going side to side to replicate the oem panel bond look. You can also do this with seam sealer, but I don't always recommend the paint brush for that. The stick usually works though.

  • I think we need to appreciate the scale of the task being done here by someone who hasn't done this before, its quite amazing, sealing stuff is a bit of a knack and art form anyway don't be so hard on yourself, amazing work and effort.

  • What a fantastic work !!! Congrats ! About the sealing on the left side, to get the same as OEM, you put some WD-40 on the right sealing, you mask it around with an adhesive, and then, you put hot wax on it. You let it cold, and once you remove it, you get a mold that you can apply on fresh sealing (put your sealing, wait a few minutes, put WD-40 on it, and place your mold on it, let it dry. Once you remove your wax, you get exactly the same texture... Only for visible parts. 😉).
