It’s time for two of the best RWD cars you can buy to go head-to-head on track! That’s right, Mat’s brought his BMW M3 along to go up against an entry-level Porsche 911 Carrera to see which is the true track king!
So how do they compare? Starting with the BMW, it’s powered by a 3-litre straight-six twin-turbo that can put down 510hp & 650Nm of torque. It’s the heaviest car here, though, tipping the scales at 1730kg.
Then we have the entry-level 911. Under the bonnet, you’ll find a 3-litre flat-six twin-turbo that can put down 385hp & 450Nm. So it’s way down on power compared to the BMW, but it’s got one big advantage - it’s 225kg lighter!
So what do you think - will the more powerful M3 snatch it? Or will it be a walkover for the 911? You’ll have to keep watching to find out!

- The track is too short, they should have one with at least 2-3 minutes to accurately compare the performance of the cars. That's part of the reason why Nürburgring lap times are regarded so highly, because on a 6-7 minutes lap you can really see what car is better, as the human error counts less then on a shorter circuit.

- @@nomad6-1 not really, nurburging favours cars with high speed stability and a lot of power, theres barely any emphasis on braking ability and low speed agility.

On paper the 911 doesn't look so impressive... but damn the engineering and precision that thing has on track. Unbeatable

- But it is a light weight sports car so while its performance from a spec sheet might not seem as impressive in reality it would be far better in the hands of a driver.

- I love Porsche don't get me wrong but they got crazy overrated, this m3 is more practical, more spacious, and its A SEDAN, its faster around the Nurburgring with professional drivers, M3 slays base model 911 on a straight line as well, The "Track" part of this video was unfortunately terribly done due to those statistics, but when I open up the comment section I still see ppl praise Porshe, makes me wanna barf unfortunately.........

- Same! I've heard it for years from every Porche owner: "once you go Porsche, you never go anywhere else again..." - Make me wonder what tuning potential is left in a base 911, if you had maybe a $5k budget, if there's any more juice that can be squeezed outta that setup.

- @@MD-uu5nt GTR is a track weapon, even if ancient... Some fast coupes and muscle cars like the M4 or the GT500 are not much more lighter and I doubt they're significantly faster or at all. And both suspension and brakes are fine, solid. Its no drama to change some bushes and pads 10% sooner.

So both definitely comparable. But on our UK roads 0-60 is more relevant AND then if you consider depreciation - 911 is the one to go for!

- What? 0-60 isn't relevant at all in the UK. We're not traffic light racers, we race around B-roads mostly. Handling has always been paramount here and always will be. Don't bother arguing back either as the manufacturers know this hence why even still some models have better suspension fitted. We have a bunch of one offs built only for the UK market and some cars were sent to prodrive etc to be modified to handle even better from factory. We do bends pal.

Under four seconds in the bog standard car. The standard 911 looks so elegant too. No fripperies. No posturing. Just beautiful lines, mechanical grip and that incredible straight six. Pound for pound and £ for £ it's the best sports coupe in the world. Pure class.

I had the exact same M3 follow me yesterday in my M140i and looking back in my rear view mirror and seeing that M3 made me feel intimidated!! The thing looks mean af!!! The M3 looks so much better in person and looks way more aggressive too

I have a 991.2 Carrera S and on the road I have never thought, "I wish it was quicker" The ONLY thing I do wish it had is a bit more exhaust sound, which is lost a bit with the turbos. Otherwise I love just going to run errands on it, not to mention the occasional track day.

- I currently have a 981 S (after selling a 718) and it is more than quick enough at any range. Makes me realise that I don't need to aspire to a 911 Targa GTS, just a base 911 Targa (992).

- @@perfer_et_obdura Then you’ll lose the sound. 981 w/ PSE is arguably the best sounding non GT model Porsche ever made. I too was shopping for a 991.2/992 GTS cabriolet last year but the turbo vacuum cleaner sound made me vomit.

Thats very similar to my 911: base c2 with sport chrono in guards red. my only mistake was waiting til my 50th birthday to get one. Absolutely no regrets, have put 9000 miles over past 7 months on it. Amazing road car. Would love a stick but PDK is wonderful. Hole shot pins your ears back. Highly recommended.

I've been in a base 2021 911. I believe the efficiency is two fold. They are light and they suffer minimal drivetrain HP loss. Of course as they are rear engined mounted they also put the HP to the ground.

- The gearbox is lightning fast and is a dual clutch. Also the engine weight is directly over the rear driven wheels which means that the power goes down really well

It’s crazy US pricing on both are wildly different. Loaded M3 is in the low $80ks, Base 911 - around $110k.

- @@healthiswealth6797 it’s higher power Competition model (we don’t have particulate filters here) and it’s just the market. 911 are just more in demand so prices have been high for some time, M3 has been a $60-80k car for a while now and that’s the market price. - @@Jacobk66 911's are not in high demand, is the business model of Porsche, which is to make a few cars only to protect the brand, since they just make a few cars it appears that demand is higher. If Porsche would make as many 911 as M3 than their price would be about about the same.

- That's Llandow circuit, near Cardiff. Just under a mile long, it's basically an oval with a bus stop by one corner and a chicane by the opposite one. Not really suitable for anything quicker than a small hatchback and very hard on brakes. Probably the cheapest circuit in the country to rent, though.

When I was growing up there was always such a (perceived??) gulf between M3s and 911s. Crazy to see how evenly matched they now are. Think I'd go for the M3 on balance, it does pretty much everything well and is more stealth than the 911 (though perhaps not in green?!).

- You know this was just a base 911, right? Step it up to the S version or beyond, and the M3 will look like a Toyota Yaris compared to the 911.

- @@gabrielmuller943 You are wrong 1/4 mile for M3 is 11.5 seconds for 911 S 11.3 seconds also evenly match, yes the lap times will be faster with the S but not by much. The m3 xdrive will be faster than the S and lap times will be evently timed.

As many times as I’ve seen a 911 beat a competitor, it still surprises me as to how efficient they are at precisely winning a given comparison. Also, in this case, as much as I love the 911, I think Matt’s M3 is a better looker in these trims. If it were a GT2 or GT3, it would be a different story from an attraction standpoint.

Both the BMW M3 and Porsche 911 are great cars. 911 is a Surprisingly an impressive machine even this base version is so quick from 0-100 kmph. I had to choose between these two the it's the 911. Thier is a 911 GTS version isn't it? Why don't compare the M3 with the 911 GTS? It will be intresting to see.

- Well the base m3 vs the 911 gts would be unfair. They have the same power output but the 911 is a 2 seater that weights 200/300 kg less and costs a lot more, of course it would have the edge in track times and acceleration. The m3 gts would be a fairer comparison, but it’s not out yet.

What most people don't except: 911 over generations a sportscar. The chassis, brakes and the whole technology is used in the supercars Turbo and GT2 and their variations. M, RS and AMG are sporty versions of saloon, estates and coupes. A R8 or Benz GT are the only sportscars. BMW hasn't one which is a shame. Engine of the M5 CS in a sportscar... 🌪️ But: I would take the M3. More fun to drive, cheaper and much more practical...

You drove that Porsche magnificently! The Porsche didn't even look like it was working hard and the suspension and it's ability to track straight without all the wobble the M3 had was impressive. Nice runs!

- Keep in mind: the base M3 isn't available in the UK and only comes with a manual transmission. The Competition has a torque converter auto.

I have a C2 992. They hit hard from the dig but lose out a bit on the top end. They perform like a dedicated platform sports car should.

I think if you had the money to buy one of these, you'd rather want a full spec car, which is the m3 or spent a couple of grand more to get the carrera s at least in mid spec lvl.

For UK prices the Carrera is absolutely the pick of the two. However, in the US: - M3 Competition rwd is $73,000, - base Carrera is $101,200.
