2020 Porsche 911 Carrera S MANUAL vs 2010 Porsche 911 Carrera S // The $100K Divide
This is the new 2020 911 Carrera S, and today it meets its elder, the 2010 997 911 Carrera S which costs less and offers naturally aspirated thrills. Both have a flat-six engine, a manual gearbox, and take the shape of an icon. Equipped with turbos, the new one does 0-60 in 4.2 seconds with the manual, and 3.7 seconds with the PDK. So can the old one stack up? Is the new one worth the massive premium? James and Thomas jump behind the wheel of both to experience them and discuss them inside and out. Watch and enjoy!
Thanks to the legendary Muneesh for allowing us to use his 997 AND his wonderful 993.
And thanks to Porsche True North for putting us in touch!

1980s: Automatic gearboxes are a luxury 2020s: Manual gearboxes are a luxury
😤
Not in europe lmao, everything is a manual here. Trust me id take an automatic everyday, and you feel free to take a 1.2 3 cylinder 70 hp manual petrol for daily driving..
Americans: 90% of cars sold on our market for the past 50 years were automatics and almost nobody can drive a manual here. Also americans: wHy dOnT wE gEt moRe MaNuALs??!? No, manual gearboxes aren't a luxury in 2020. They're standard in pretty much all cars pretty much everywhere in the world outside of NA.
@Frank cassidy you can make a lot more money trading on forex and crypto or investing on the stock market and probably owning the Carrera
I actually invest both on stock and crypto but lately crypto is far better than stock
Reviewing high end cars and comparing them to their more financially accessible counterparts is a good way to go. You give us the best of both worlds, the cutting edge of today and the hidden treasures on the secondary market. Everyone of those cars was amazing, and you showed appreciation for them all. Well done.
J S it’s fascinating to see how far cars have come but also highlight some of the reasons why enthusiasts like older cars, e.g. for their hydraulic steering or mechanical simplicity
@@neelparmar6690 I went on a rant the other day about older cars. Not so much that they are better than the technological wonders of today, because they aren't, but because they made us better drivers. There's more to driving than just getting from A to B on the highway fast. These days, lane keep assist is ubiquitous, adaptive cruise has made is to you don't even need to touch the pedals, and you can parallel park by touching a button. I know people who have never been behind the wheel of anything older than a 2005 Ford F-150. They don't know how to drive with no power steering. They don't know about life without being able to hook up their phones to the stereo. It's funny, how so many drivers cry over the looming loss of manual transmissions, when they never really drive on their own anyway. Those old cars made us part of the drive. The immediacy of driving them was not unlike riding a motorcycle. We were part of the road and the world around us in a way we can't be in modern cars. The connection to the road was direct, and there was less safety gear to separate us from the experience. This is why it's great to see the side by side between the modern and the old. It shows how far we have come and what we used to consider state of the art. And Thomas and James did a wonderful job of describing the sensations of old compared to the sleek new experience. Thanks for taking the time to contribute on the way things were.
J S wonderfully put
@@JS-hw8ve I agree with you. My first manual "sporty" car was a 1985 VW GTI which I purchased new. It was featured in Motor Trend's , "Car of the Year", that year and 2 years later I traded in for a 1987 16V GTI which was the 3rd car in my life up until then that I modified. That thing did not have power steering and didn't need it. It was standard and handled amazingly well and was fast even by today's standards....for a hot hatch. I loved driving it and I lived in Toronto where the roads were amazing compared to Montreal where I moved back to in 1987.
@@xorbitman Good on you, bud. I didn't know what a "hot hatch" was until much later. Where I am from, the sports car guys and muscle car guys had less friendly names for that type of car. My own opinion on a person's car is a lot more welcoming, and comes from understanding where they come from, and what the use of them would be. Asia and Europe are tighter, more compact, with narrower roads, so handling and maneuverability were important. North America has lots of space and vast distances to cross, so power was at a premium, as well as comfort for long, long rides. Then there's taxes and other issues to contend with. As long as your car does what you need it to do, safely, then you have a damn fine car. And I do so love me a good Golf. The platform is far more comfortable than the last Jetta I was in. Was looking at buying one of the 2020 Golf Rs back in Nov.

Daily drive a 997.1 and it never fails to put a smile on my face. I recommend every driving enthusiast try a 911 at least once.
My 997.1 sleeps during the winter, and I don't take it to work. Both other than that I drive it as much as I can. 16 years and the car still feels fantastic. I was given a Cayenne loaner when I took it into for service. The interior is light years ahead of my car. But when I'm driving it, I really don't feel I'm missing too much. And yes, every driving enthusiast should try a 911 at some point. Even if it is the dreaded 996. One that has been taken care of is still a fantastic car to drive.
Bought a 997.1 2 years ago to, I also leave it in the garage for winter but 8 months a year it puts a smile on my face everytime I drive the thing! One thing I changed on mine wich is an absolute must is I changed the steering wheel into a 991.2 generation one, I recommend it I really do

The 997 was so sleek ! Especially the early ones, and without ginormous wheels introduced with 991. Love it.
Alain best looking post 993 911 in my opinion
By far the best (looking) modern 911. Still fast by today's standards, and all variations could be sold with a manual transmission. What's not to like?
@Collidiscope you can buy a NA 991.1 manual
Unpopular opinion: I feel like the 991.1/.2 chassis doesn't get enough love... To me, that gen also feels pretty lively and engaging, while balancing both digital and analogue, which the analogue part does take over for the MOST part of the car, not entirely. Yeah, it misses the Hydraulic steering, but still has a very confident EPAS rack. Though, it would be wonderful to see Porsche returning to Hydraulic power assist racks.

@@iluvcakes19 brilliant cars! I've had two now for about two years with each. The only thing that sucks about them is the fear (mostly overblown) surrounding the IMS bearing and cylinder bore scoring. Generally speaking, if the car is regularly driven, it's probably fine.
@@coreykononchuk dope! Great summation. I saw a really inexpensive 2005 recently that got me thinking. I really don't need the car but basically it's cheaper than buying a new or used 86/FR-S, so I could essentially use it as a fun beater. Only thing is consumables and maintenance don't make sense in that capacity. Again, I really don't need the car but damn I low-key want it (also, rather, in comparison, I'm putting the 911 against a 2001 RT/10 which would be a completely different and rad experience).
This has become my favorite car channel. Cheers from Argentina

I was picking up my car from a body shop one time and they had an old 70's 911 there that the owner had turned into a rally car. I was obsessed with opening the door and closing it, lol. The popping sound the handle made and the satisfying clicking sound of the door closing. I can totally relate, haha. Great video.

"1996 wasn't that long ago" Thanks for making feel better about my age, James! :)
The fact that well maintained, low mileage 997’s are now keeping pace price-wise with the newer 991s should tell you what enthusiasts think is the better car. 😉
it tells which one is still in production and not much else. to reach the conclusion you did, you have to come back to the newer ones in 12 years.
991s aren't/weren't in production at the time of OP's writing. They're comparing the 997 to 992.

Just to add, the Porsche 997.2 Carrera S does 0-62mph in 4.5 seconds (so 0-60mph in 4.3 seconds) and not a “hair over 5 seconds” as stated in the video. 😎 Love the video; great to see a MANUAL 992! The throw of the gait when changing looks so tight and precise!

The poor gauge visibility is a one of the charms of my 993 and the many air cooled cars that came before it. With the 992 they've gone back to the old layout and allowed that quirk to make it to production, which I think is familiar & fantastic.
Fantastic video guys! Thank you. After watching that, what I'd love to know is how you feel about the 991 relative to the 992 and 997.2.
