New AMG SL 55 v Porsche 911 GTS v BMW M850i v Jag F-Type R: DRAG RACE

We’ve finally got our hands on the new Mercedes-AMG SL 55, so of course, we had to take it for a drag race!
We’ve got Mat lining up in the AMG, and alongside him, we have Yianni in a Porsche 911 GTS. Oh, and there's also a BMW M850i and a Jaguar F-Type R lining up for good measure!
So let’s see how this set of convertibles compares. Starting with the AMG, it’s powered by a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 that’s good for 476hp and 700Nm. It’s equipped with four-wheel-drive, tips the scales at 1,950kg, and costs an eye-watering £147,000!
The Porsche is the lightest car in the line-up, weighing in at 1,615kg. It’s powered by a 3-litre twin-turbo flat-six that can deliver 480hp and 570Nm, but it may have a potentially significant disadvantage… It’s only equipped with RWD!
Next up we have the BMW, with a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 that can put down 530hp and 750Nm. It may have 4WD, but it’s also the heaviest car here, tipping the scales at 2,125kg! Then finally we have the Jag. With an awesome 5-litre Supercharged V8 under the bonnet, it can deliver 575hp and 700Nm. It’s also packing 4WD and weighs in at 1790kg.
So how will this play out? Can the all-new SL snatch a win? Or will the power of the Jag propel it to victory? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE!

The facelift F Type is so beautiful. It’s such a shame that Jaguar isn’t reliable :( Edit: So i guess the newer ones are more reliable and that's nice! If i could only buy one sportscar, i would definitely buy the F-Type.

In warm weather, AWD offers no acceleration advantage vs RWD in a 911. One of my favorite things about driving a 911.

Not surprising tho with such an an engine :) as a convertible it looks better too, bit like Aston. The SL55 is both for looks & performance not great but the older version was even slower.

This was a better promo video for the much older Jag than it was for any of the 2022-23 cars in the race. The F-Type remains at the top of the affordable dream car segment for me.

as an owner of a '21 f-pace svr I have to agree, previous cars I have owned including an X5M, Mercedes GLC AMG and an audio RSQ3, simply have nothing on its performance, sound and driving experience, however ironically, the jags reliability, has been top of the pack! Edit: i accidentally made a typo rsq5 instead of rsq3, which i was most very aware about XD

The f type r is the best looking best sounding and tied 2x and came 2nd 2x and won the brake test and if that ain’t impressive idk what is , I love jags ❤
What I appreciate most ab Carwow’s drag races is the fact that he does a 1/4 mile dig, 1/4 mile roll, 1/2 mile roll, and sometimes even a 1 mile roll. Really gets to see how each car truly performs.

I was given the keys to a m850 xdrive 2022 while my M4 is in BMW service and I have to say, it's an amazing driving car but you can really feel the weight. It doesn't know if it wants to be a sports car or just a GT car but still the twin turbo V8 is a insanely smooth.
About polish channel: that's awesome idea, most of polish people don't have any issues watching your vids, but I recommended polish version for my dad. He's 57 and he's loving it. Keep up good work carwow!

An 'affordable' used Jag F-Type R is now high on my list for a retirement toy. Did not know they were this quick!
I have an F Type R tuned by DMS to 650 bhp , it’s pretty quick, not just fast in a straight line sounds incredible to, just sold my 600 LT and this still doesn’t feel slow at all 👍.

@@reductio1000 I don't think anyone expects the cost of ownership to be like Toyota for any of these performance cars. My buddy has an a 2015 S63 Coupe AMG, bought it certified 2 years ago, purchased a warrantee extension as well. Good thing as it only has 35,000 miles but the dealer has spent about $3 grand on it fixing incidental stuff. So yea, if one does not recognize the premium COO that comes with the fun, so sorry.

Your vids are always hillarious. Figured the Mecedes would be last as they are getting crappier every year but was surprised at the Jag. The superchargers usually take a bit to kick up but it got off the line pretty well.

The jaag does not have 575hp but 550 as it is the pre-facelift. The SVR version, however, does have 575
XJ220 still better than F Type.

No the Germans invest in engine technology so they produce torque throughout the the rev range. That’s why they are quicker than a Jag with 100 peak bhp more.

Very impressed by the Jaguar's performance considering it's a 5+ year old model.
I drove a 2016 Lamborghini with 610hp and then drove the 5.0 L V8 Jag and it was the most fun car i have ever driven and felt so much quicker

911 lost 6mph on that drag race.
The 911 was a GTS; it produces more horsepower than the SL (480hp for the GTS vs 469hp for the SL 55) _and_ weighs less than the SL. Therefore, the result was to be expected!

Great to see the the Jag doing well. After owning an F-Type R, I can say it’s a great head turner, but be prepared for it spend more time in the repairs garage, than out on the road….

Holy mother of God! The Jag is conceptionally anywhere from 6 to 10 years older than the other cars here and still always comes in at least second if not first. And it's probably the cheapest option, too. It certainly is the prettiest option. Looks like the German manufacturers have blown this.

That last drag launch from the Porsche was really impressive. shows that you dont really need AWD if your engine is in the back. Though it would be really interesting ti see a comparison between a Carrera S and a Carrera 4S, if the AWD actually makes up for the added weight in a 1/4 mile.

the 4wd Porsche would destroy the rest, i remember when Mat tried the 991 Carrera 4S and did a 0-60 in 3.00 sec and the GTS have 30-40hp over the regular Carrera. Hell even a Carrera 4 with PDK is a sub 3.5sec car today.

They're total sleepers to all the people who've never run into one. I got my hands on a low-mile '16 AWD R about a year ago. I love taking it for rips on the back-roads and highways. It only really turns heads once you get on it and people realize it's no joke in both acceleration and one of the baddest stock exhaust notes on the planet.

I've heard the S can be problematic, but the R is bulletproof. No problems with mine in a year of ownership

Cabriolets are generally that Fabric top, convertibles are generally removable/retractable hard tops
I picked up a 2017 F-Type R l, which is the last year before they neutered the exhaust before it hits 3500rpm. it’s fast as hell and at least here in america, it’s rare and get a decent amount of attention. great cars for a great value
They didn’t neuter it much, I had a 2014 V8 S (rowdy in the best way) and then upgraded to 2017 AWD R (same as the 2014) now I have a 2019 R, because I wanted the LED headlights but not the facelift car, and while it does have less pops the exhaust sounds exactly the same …..and to be honest, I’ve come to like the more subtle 1-2 pops on overrun instead of the full on machine gun firing squad of the old one, which was fun at first ….then became a little obnoxious and artificial over time.
@@jameswillard1 I’m looking to get one of those myself. Do you know until which year the exhaust was still exciting? My understanding was that 2017-2019 is the best choice, since 2020 exhaust shouldn’t be fun anymore
@@marnoi8754 not sure about 2020? But the 2019 sounds absolutely as aggressive as my 14/17 sounded minus the never ending pops. Don’t get me wrong it still crackles and pops but not for 2 minutes every time you lift off the gas like a BMW with a burble tune. Now that I’ve lived with it I don’t think I could deal with the earlier cars artificial sound effects

Are you serious? This is the full blown type R. Top of the line for jaguar, while the others are with lesser models. It has 100 more hp than all the rest. And it still got destroyed pretty much. How is that impressive? It's literally anti-impressive - it's humiliating! They tried to bias the race in favor of the BRIISH, but still failed miserably.
Unfortunately you can't really go anywhere in it because it's got no storage space whatsoever. The already tiny boot is mostly taken up with the roof mechanism. Guess you can put a small backpack in it.
As soon as I hit the jackpot, that test will be useful to me. Meanwhile,it’s good to dream

@David Ensinger The SL63 is better matched to these cars in terms of performance, that's the trim level they should've used. Car & Driver posted these #'s: 60 mph: 3.0 sec (3.1 sec by MotorTrend) 1/4-Mile: 11.2 sec @ 125 mph (11.3 @ 124mph by MotorTrend) As you can see SL63 better suited for this match-up. Porsches are known for being notoriously quick so definitely would've been a gr8 deciding factor between the two. Probably would come down to which driver gets a better start off the line
@@justtonee270 if the sl63 was in this, then m8 comp would be the comparison plus a 911 turbo or turbo s. Both of those would destroy the sl63. Plus the m8comp costs 50k less than a comparable sl63
@george081982 haha yeah they would blow it away. Complete facts! They both also have over 600hp, BMW w/what 617hp and 640hp from the Turbo S. That's why I mentioned hp wise the SL63 fits better with these models compared in this video w/o going to the top tier big dogs. Mercedes-AMG currently doesn't have anything to compete in that category unless maybe you consider the Mercedes-AMG GT63 or GT63 E-Performance but those are 4 door fastbacks not a cabriolet. Maybe we have to wait until the new generation AMG GT 2 Dr and see what engine they stick that with 🤷🏾♂️

I can't beat any of those but my full size 4w drive 2021 Roush F150 with a stage 2 whipple making 800hp runs a 12 in the 1/4...crazy to think I'd be right on their asses and from a roll, good chance I'd be right in the mix.
