I was 18 when I watched this match live. People often comments about how great Messi and Cristiano are but they should see this man before the injuries struck. He did not get enough protection from referees. Not only in this game but in the previous round of that world cup against Denmark he suffered some ugly tackle.One from Brian Laudrup I still remember. After 98 WC till 02 WC he played only 52 club games because of the injury yet came back and had his redemption.If the injuries did not affected him he would be named the greatest off all without any doubt. For me he is still though is the one and only. Football is never same after he retired.

well said. messi is great but r9...what a bull. messi 90% of the time receives the ball around 1/4 into opponents half and dribbles. ronaldo picked it up from half way line and just ran directly towards goal. it was madness and the scary thing was the dribbles were so successful. he changed in the later part of his career to be more striker focused but so crazy to see him in this way.

This was the last game I saw Ronaldo that fast. It was unbelievable. He was playing at a different speed. No way to stop, you had to have a second line of defense and football was way more physical. There would have been 2 red cards in today’s game and defense was much tighter back then. No way Messi or C Ronaldo score that many goals in this era. This was 80 and 90s football. One of the most legendary and underrated performances in WC history. He was torching the likes of Jaap Stam, Frank De Boer, Philip Cocu and Edgar Davids all by himself sometimes. And Brazil was not a great side in 1998. They begged Dunga to come back and he was 35 partnered with Cesar Sampaio, both of whom were playing in the Japanese League, let that sink in. The only other great attacking talent they had was Rivaldo. And Brazil heaped all that pressure on a 21 year old Ronaldo and he almost delivered all by himself. And he did it in an era where football was defensive and the stars did not get much protection. Glad that he got his redemption in 2002. They should have taken Romario just to ease some of the burden from Ronaldo. But Ronaldo's lasting legacy is that he was the mega superstar of the globalisation football age and how he changed the way that the striker position will be played forever. El Phenomenon indeed.

Olha o posicionamento dele. Gostava de receber a bola nas pontas enquanto deixava o Bebeto mais centralizado. Não era um centroavante, mas um atacante. Assim jogava na Itália também. Já na copa de 2002 e 2006, ele ficava mais plantado. O Ronaldo de 2002 e de 2006 é completamente diferente do Ronaldo de 98.

His style of football is more of a one two pass and fast attacking game.. he is able to beat any player by his samba skills.. he is just agile,quick, great balance, aggressive and strong. He does not relatiate rough tackles which is very impressive. He scores goals and also sometimes create them. He can give slip throughs and also feint like a Samba King.

Ronaldo had his legs taken out and was fortunate to escape serious injury, just like he was at 2:28, which was arguably even more cynical from the Dutch. Both are reckless and dangerous challenges, even by 1998 standards. FIFA published a rule amendment just before the '98 World Cup aimed precisely at cracking down on "tackles from behind which endanger the safety of an opponent". Messi and CR7 have *nothing* on this guy. He was phenomenal. And he won the World Cup. Twice (was part of the 94 squad, though I don't think he played). The mistake people make about France 98 is the assumption that Zidane was a star. He was a virtual unknown before the World Cup and only became a star *after* winning the tournament, scoring twice in the final. Ronaldo, on the other hand, was already a well known superstar *BEFORE* said tournament thanks to his exploits at Inter Milan. And proof of his superstardom, Nike did an advert for that year's tournament featuring the Brazillian team playing footie in an airport.

If he didn't get serious knee injuries and become overweight (free from training) , he would improve to be the strongest one and could play far better than what he did that we have seen. From 2002 he did't improve or develop his talents anymore and became slower and slower and couldn't perform vigorously because afraid of his chronic injuries relapse. He is the real king of striker 😍

He Man actually I’m still confused to this day, like de Boer tackle, he got the ball first and his foot later clipped Ronaldo’s foot. By the definition it’s a clean tackle. But I believe I’ve seen many similar incident where defender gets the ball but their follow up leg hit the opponents leg, and referee book the defender. Nonetheless it was superb run by Ronaldo and also superb defending by de Boer. What an intense match.

I was 18 when I watched this match live. People often comments about how great Messi and Cristiano are but they should see this man before the injuries struck. He did not get enough protection from referees. Not only in this game but in the previous round of that world cup against Denmark he suffered some ugly tackle.One from Brian Laudrup I still remember. After 98 WC till 02 WC he played only 52 club games because of the injury yet came back and had his redemption.If the injuries did not affected him he would be named the greatest off all without any doubt. And Brazil was not a great side in 1998. They begged Dunga to come back and he was 35 partnered with Cesar Sampaio, both of whom were playing in the Japanese League, let that sink in. The only other great attacking talent they had was Rivaldo. And Brazil heaped all that pressure on a 21 year old Ronaldo and he almost delivered all by himself. And he did it in an era where football was defensive and the stars did not get much protection. Glad that he got his redemption in 2002. They should have taken Romario just to ease some of the burden from Ronaldo. But Ronaldo's lasting legacy is that he was the mega superstar of the globalisation football age and how he changed the way that the striker position will be played forever. El Phenomenon indeed.

Messi and CR7 have *nothing* on this guy. He was phenomenal. And he won the World Cup. Twice (was part of the 94 squad, though I don't think he played). The mistake people make about France 98 is the assumption that Zidane was a star. He was a virtual unknown before the World Cup and only became a star *after* winning the tournament, scoring twice in the final. Ronaldo, on the other hand, was already a well known superstar *BEFORE* said tournament thanks to his exploits at Inter Milan. And proof of his superstardom, Nike did an advert for that year's tournament featuring the Brazillian team playing footie in an airport.

He Man actually I’m still confused to this day, like de Boer tackle, he got the ball first and his foot later clipped Ronaldo’s foot. By the definition it’s a clean tackle. But I believe I’ve seen many similar incident where defender gets the ball but their follow up leg hit the opponents leg, and referee book the defender. Nonetheless it was superb run by Ronaldo and also superb defending by de Boer. What an intense match.
