Does the grapple really contained birdstop?
The reason that the company "disappeared" is because they got out of the game before it became publicly known that they were selling people apples dipped in bird repellent. The chemical does in fact say "Keep out of reach of children" and "If swallowed contact poison control immediately"
You could argue that there's something in the evaporation process (or given plenty of time after) that makes the propblems of drinking the slop intert. So it would be "safe" to do so in a controlled setting. But you also have to count for the lowest common denominator, because suppose someone out there loves it too much and eats 24 per meal with a glass of water that might also reactivate the process. Unless, of course, they did something so shady the FDA shut them down and everyone was legally gagged in the ensuing lawsuit or something.
Then how the heck is it food safe💀💀💀

I by chance tried one of these apples back when they were available in 2011, a coworker offered me one since you could only buy them in packs of three. It was as you described, a mild grape flavor, but it faded the deeper you ate into the apple until it tasted like a regular fuji apple. The next time I was in the produce section at the grocery store, I looked for these things and about fell over when I saw the price, it was $6-7 for just three of these apples, and that was in 2011 dollars. You could buy a whole bag of like 10-12 fuji apples for that price. I never heard about any recalls for health effects of those apples, they just didn't sell well and faded from existence. I've seen several weird fruit hybrids or "designer" fruits pop up in the produce section over the decades, and they never stay around for long because they're either too expensive or aren't appealing for one fruit to taste like another.

According to some sleuths it might be another very similar product, called Bird Shield. But by all reason they might be equivalent. I think 26.4% might well be due to fundamental properties of this grape flavour chemical, such as its solubility in... Bird-X Bird Stop doesn't specify, Bird Shield specifies as "inert ingredients". Inert. So it's not alcohol. Water, should be water? It is water soluble. The MSDS of these two products disagree on the safety of the product. Bird Stop claims to be a Category 5 Acute Toxin, while Bird Shield says it's "generally recognised as safe" but irritating to skin and eyes. Table salt is Category 5 Acute Toxin, so make of that what you will, with estimated lethal toxicity several times higher. Just in case, i'm not convinced i would want to use Bird Stop, but i think they're likely doing the same exact thing as Bird Shield, they're just being overly cautious, or just uncertain of the purity of their raw ingredients. Maybe their water is an Acute Toxin. Hold your Wee for a Wii.

For whatever reason, the mystery of the missing Grapple really got to me. Turns out, Grapple Fruits' sole source for the Grapples was C&O Nursery in Wenatchee, WA. Likely, Grapple Fruits was a subsidiary brand of the business, but haven't been able to confirm. In September/August of 2023, the Nursery's owner shut the nursery down, and Grapple production ceased with the nursery closing. The Inventor listed in the patent, Gary A. Snyder, is part of the family that ran C&O. The CEO at the time of their closing was a Todd Snyder, and I found that the nursery management had passed through 4 generations of Snyder's. Gary was Secretary.
Interesting
The method described in the patent isn't exactly how they were made. When you looked closely at grapples, you could see tiny perforations in the skin with even spacing over the entire apple - there was clearly some additional injection or just perforation to better absorb the flavor compound. And yes, they tasted like grape-y apples. I liked them.

So the Bird Stop or some other form bird repellent solution is literally what was used to create the Grapple. The 26.4% was no coincidence, as it is the solution that was used to create the product. I had an Econ professor give an entire hour lecture on analyzing the cost-effectiveness of bird repellents, which ended with the conclusion that the most cost-effective bird repellent was “grape soda” aka “artificial grape flavor”.
I wonder if you could make grapples with grape soda instead of bird stop
@@bibasik7 the soda may have a lower concentration of it than diluted grape stop would. Potentially meaning that it doesn't have a high enough of a concentration to make a difference. As well as the fact that if that is the case then if it diffuses into the apple it will only have a part of the percentage of concentration as the soda hence possibly making zero difference. It may also be that such a low concentration would struggle to penetrate the skin causing this to either not work or take a much longer time to work than simply dipping it in diluted grapestop
While it might be great at repelling birds, I have a feeling that many bugs and insects would reeeeeally be quite fond of it.

Yeah, I thought they smelled of grape but still tasted of apple. Was sorta disappointed.
I was wondering how they were gonna get the flavor INTO it. that was the main technical obstacle I was interested in and im very disappointed to hear its not solved.
Yeah they were not very good at all
Bird Stop's product page on their website claims it has _"No harmful chemicals"_ and is _"Safe for use around children, plants, and food crops"_ and that it works because _"methylanthranilate (bitter, smelly derivative of concord grapes) has a taste and smell that birds avoid - irritates their trigeminal systems"_ What this tells me is that *drinking Bird Stop* is going to be a painful, but probably non-lethal experience. However *methyl anthranilate* is safe to consume. Not only did Nile use it to make his grape soda previously, it's used in grape Kool-Aid, sodas, and candy.
Yeah this is what I thought too, just make a sort of flavor agent birds don't like and they'll learn not to come around real fast, same goes for most animals honestly, some are just harder to find the right flavor for.
But again, the problem is we have no idea what else is in there to dilute the active ingredient. Safe for use around children still does not mean good to eat in larger quantities.
"It is a violation of federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling" - makes a video useing it as flavoiring on the heath side, it says its fine to spray it on fruits after dilution, and handle them after drying, but sais 1% dilution and "5-8 days or when no odor" to eat... so the recipe was 1 minute in 10% to make it an overkill, so if you eat it 1-2weeks later its still grapy... he just ate it fresh...

So as another comment replied pointed out. At 1:30 pause and see on the left side clearly says to use BIRD X also know as bird stop or fruit shield. So in case you wondering, Nile knew, Nile did, and Nile ate. Case solved. Thanks for the great upload.
I am in total agreement except for the fact that it doesn't actually say that. It instead says: "For the below listed examples, the preferred admixture included an "off-the-shelf" 26.4% solution of methyl anthranilate as manufactured by Bird-X, Inc. of Chicago, Ill., U.S.A., and marketed under the names of 'Bird Shield™Bird Repellent' and 'Fruit Shield Repellent.'" It may not actually say "bird stop" anywhere, but yeah. Probably close enough for him to guess. (This wasn't written to argue against your point so much as to save someone from having to pause and find it for themselves.)
Thanks for the grape upload.
And at 1:42 it says only to dip the apple for 1 second, but he does it for 1 minute. This may have been a different part than the section where he was reading from because it does seem like his process was slightly different so this may have been a typo in the summarized section.
7:52 That "hm" from the cameraman was such a "That doesn't sound right but I don't know enough about apples to dispute it"
lol true
Essentially
this feel like the type of stuff i would do when bored
This honestly seemed like the first time i have seen him complete his project in one go
I work in packaging of pharmaceuticals. The safety seal on that Bird Stop was all kinds of burnt. 1 of 2 things happened during packaging. 1. The cap didn't get applied tight befor induction sealing or 2. the bottle got stuck under the induction sealer. Not sure if the integrity of the product would be compromised or not, but I wouldn't have wanted to be the one to test it.
tastes like grape tho! mmmm... but burns a bit lol
@@joshd79 Methyl anthranilate with a teeny bit of hydrofluoric acid for that extra kick
The creators of Grapple actually used this EXACT METHOD. You can see it on their web archive. The only difference is they added a grapple logo above the bird stop, but other than that almost everything is exact XD 😂
hello pigeon :)
Scary

Petition to make this a real product again
Literally the label: "If swallowed, call a poison control center or doctor immediately for treatment advice." NileBlue: "If it's good for a bird, it's probably good for us, too, right?"
I remember having graples once, I was so impressed that they actually tasted like grapes til I read the package and learned they weren't some new awesome apple breed they were basically just injected with grape essence or something.
If you check the left page of the patent at around 1:30, you can see they actually used exactly the shown repellent.
@@luziferius3687 damn ur right
take a shot whenever nile says “i’m sure it’s fine”
i dont want to die of alcohol poisoning
Nah, I'm sure you'll be fine.
The reason that the company "disappeared" is because they got out of the game before it became publicly known that they were selling people apples dipped in Bird Stop. The chemical does in fact say "Keep out of reach of children" and "If swallowed contact poison control immediately".
I remember these, they tasted really good
i have never been more scared for his safety than i was when he tasted the diluted bird stop
"Kinda burns your tongue."
Hey man, we really need a third channel - *_Cooking with Nigel._* Because the number of actual times the goal of a video has been to make a real food item is fairly high now (cotton candy, cherry soda, grape soda, processed cheese, chocolate, that recent cinnamon candy installment, hot sauce, and now the legendary Grāpple) . These previous experiments are a great starting point for a food channel. Might I suggest following Dr. Kikunae Ikeda's process of isolating glutamic acid, before attempting the first industrial process he developed to produce MSG. And then, use the MSG to make a Montréal classic - General Tao's Chicken (seriously, what else could you make but this? It's just too perfect).
Nigel's Kitchen, like a lab science version of Nigella
@@deyesed NIGEL'S KITCHEN
I am completely on board with this. Might I suggest the channel name, "NileBread?" Edit: Ooooh, or mabe "NileFed"
It should follow the naming scheme he currently has, and be called NileYellow! Since the colour yellow is often associated with food
nile green
I thought this whole premise was pretty weird for a NileRed video, but then i saw the NileBlue tag on the t shirt xd
I remember when my mom used to buy those. Loved them for some reason
As a major plant nerd I desperately want Nigel to do some more chemistry with plants and/or phytochemicals. There's so much absurd stuff you could try, it would be quite the adventure.
please elaborate
He should go full thought emporium mode
@@kingatrzeciak8442 The topic is quite frankly too broad to elaborate. It could involve everything from the toxins in stinging plants to manufacturing various plant hormones (which can be applied to create all sorts of freaky results, gibberellic acid is a common one and even used commercially) to extracting various flavor compounds from fruit (juicy fruit gum has a compound found in jackfruit, though its made artificially) to just straight up using phytochemicals in various reactions. I just suggested plant chemistry in general cause it could be a whole new world of chemistry worth exploring on KZhead!
The animation at 6:35 really helped me gain understanding of the process.
Clearly, Lucas Film was involved. I only wish Hans Zimmer did the sound effects. 😂
😂😂😂😂
I can’t believe this is how I found out that I think bird repellent is delicious. I remember those damn apples and being so marveled that someone finally made a “grape” up to my standards of crunchy.
i love how all the food related videos are the most silly
NileBlue: The % is the same, so who cares about the other ingredients!
its probably the exact thing they used in the patent, the percentage is just to much of a coincidence and the fact the patent doesnt list what the other ingredients are is most likely because it doesnt say on the bird stop, also the fact that its bird stop makes me think this is an accidental discovery rather then on purpose, it would also explain why the original grapple's arent around anymore because people somewhere learned of it or the farmers figured out "huh, maybe this would be REALLY BAD if it became public"
Some things are just too perfect to resist...
@PoorWorldwithoutgod good lord stop posting that on every comment that has more than a hundred likes
@@vhaelen326 "probably the same" is kind of a gamble when the MSDS says the other stuff in it is acutely toxic and to wear viton gloves as it can penetrate the skin
@@unfunnycesiumyoure argueing with a bot...
I might know why 26.4 % : 26.4 % of 1 US Gallon is 1 liter and Methyl anthranilate turns solid at 24°C ( slightly above room temperature ) . So maybe the pure compound comes from a company that uses the metric system and then the manufacturers adapt the formula to the gallon format, mixing it with stuff to keep it liquid or at least not solid.
underrated comment (unless this is just made up)
@@MadContendery honestly it does make sense
@@MadContendery 1 Liter = 0.264 gallon that's for sure, problem is my reasoning only makes sense for the Bird Stop. Those apples were made in US that's a start, maybe the production units also used the gallon system for the bath procedure and it was something like " mix 1 dose of creamy flavor with X amount of water ".
Good point
@@secrettaco5027could be the grapple was accidentally discovered by a farmer using bird stop to keep birds off their trees. Then they thought it could be marketable and said 26.4% works, let’s run with it.
tbh if i saw a food labeled as "do not eat or you will die" in Nigel's fridge i would absolutely never touch it
This is the exact moment that Nile blue became snow white
