I've always liked the taste of energy drinks and for years now, I have wanted there to be caffeine-free versions (specifically Red Bull). However, it doesn't seem like that is going to happen any time soon, so I decided to try and do it myself.

  • I find that the main flavour contributor to energy drinks is Guarana, the fruit from Paullinia cupana. (Source: I've had Guarana juice) The fruit does contain caffeine, though. So maybe the right way to go about this might be to try to extract the flavour from the fruit and make a soda with it?

  • For anyone confused how you can talk about the pKa of something without any losable hydrogens, it’s talking about the pKa of the protonated caffeine, the “conjugate acid” (so you just imagine a hydrogen ion on the imide (the double-bonded) nitrogen. The pKa is how much you have to drop the pH (increase H+ concentration) to get it protonated again.

    • @@TehUltimateSnake Alright, imagine you have a special toy that can stick to other toys when you touch it. But to make it stick, you need to give it a tiny, invisible piece called a "proton." The pKa is like a secret code that tells you how many pieces you need to give to the toy to make it sticky. If the pKa is low, you need to give it fewer pieces to make it sticky. If it's high, you need to give it more pieces. So, when we talk about the pKa of something without any "losable hydrogens," we're just talking about how sticky that special toy can get when it's all charged up.

It's clearly not an acidic molecule and his confusion about the pKa value is mainly due to a lack of basic chemical knowledge. • I am sure that the flavour had been affected due to the evaporation of the volatile components. As for the lighter (less full) taste, you miss the bitterness of caffeine which was reduced by at least 25% by mass. As soon as perceived bitterness has non-linear function, 25% may completely change taste profile.

If the salt concentration is higher on one side of the "barrier" than the other, water will diffuse across the barrier from the lower concentration side to the higher concentration side in an attempt to balance the concentrations. In an IV, your cells would burst if there wasn't salt added (water would diffuse into the cells to try decrease intracellular solute concentration), and in this case, water diffuses from the DCM into the brine solution.

  • Couple of suggestions from a pureplay practical standpoint: First off, I'm pretty sure you can just buy Red Bull syrup. That would remove the 10 hour desiccation step, or at least shorten it severely. Second, if the DCM works best with surface area, then I see no reason why you couldn't place a relatively small amount of Red Bull syrup on top of a large pool of DCM in a much wider container. Leave it there for a long time-presumably somewhere cool, dark, and with a lid to prevent the DCM from evaporating-then to separate it, you can just slowly add it all into a separatory funnel. Might not be a perfect solution, but I think you'd pull out more caffeine that way. Once the caffeine is out of it, it seems like reintroducing what was taken away will be a simpler process.

Bonus is no toxic chemicals are used or weird tasting ones, downside is it's hard to do. You'd basicaly have to build a seperatory funnel that is also a pressure vessel. I wonder if any other compounds in redbull get extracted that way, but if you think you can do it, I'd give it a shot🤗 would make for an interesting video nontheless😂

I used to buy Asian Red Bull from the Asian store near my house about 20 years ago and it came in a little glass bottle that was uncarbonated and in my opinion way better than the stuff we get in the US but I don't know what that was in it!
