34-year-old Field Guide, Cliff Butlin, managed to provide his guests with a stupefying front-row-seat sighting at Mjejane Game Reserve, 21 March 2017.
Cliff recalls: “The lions had already attacked the calf before I arrived. The buffalo cow and other members of the herd had pushed the lions away, so when I arrived at the sighting the lions were watching the buffalo from a safe distance plotting their attack again.
After an hour of waiting, the buffalo started moving off with the lions not too far behind them. I went down a road and waited for the buffalo to arrive when another OSV radioed in to say that the lions were starting to give chase. This was when all hell broke loose and the calf was left behind. The lions had initially run past the calf as they did not see it on the other side of the bush, but when the calf called for its mother, the lions turned and locked eyes on the helpless victim and I knew they were going take it down.
The mother of the calf did not come back as she was possibly injured as well during the first attack and the other buffalo could smell the lion's scent on the calf.
I’ve been guiding now for just over 12 years, mainly doing Kruger park drives and tours but in the last 3 years, I’ve been on Mjejane Reserve which is a private reserve incorporated into the Kruger. I’ve seen a lot over the years but this was a special moment! When you predict the moment and it unfolds in exactly that way, it is so rewarding.
Advice to others in the same sighting situation would be to remain still and not to panic. My main theory is not to put human emotions on the wild animals in situations like this
That evening the lions were in the same area drinking next to the road. The next day we found the buffalo herd that was chased and noticed a bull buffalo with its tail missing so I suspect these lions had another go at them during the night with no luck”.

It’s just life bro.
Poor little calf. It clearly didn't understand the situation. It seemed confused. It seemed to look and call for the others. It could barely walk. It was just a baby. And when it realized it's gonna die it screamed for its mama. I feel sorry for it, because it had to die kind of painfully at such a young age. The scream of panic before it gets killed isn't easy to hear. For anyone calling that calf dumb: it was just a baby. And it died. Be lucky that you're not the calf.
The calf is dumb but even dumber are those huge dozen buffalos that ran away. What difference does it make that it's a baby buffalo? It's basic everyday predator prey interactions that have been happening for millions of years. I don't know why people keep projecting their emotions onto it.
I mean, yeah it was sad. And yeah it was dumb, but all babies are dumb. Let's be real, human babies are the dumbest and most helpless of all animals, by a large margin. Nature doesn't play nice, and babies are easier meals (albeit insufficient food for a pride of lions).

Yea dumb calf. Didn't follow the heard, made noise when it was alone before the lions saw it. Literally went in circles instead of trying to run away. Should have either kept quiet and tried to slip away inconspicuously, or just made a bolt for it in an all out sprint. Not give away its locations with noise and literally turn in circles
I used google translator to decipher the calf's BAAAAHHHHH. It said.. "HEY LIONS, I'M OVER HERE HIDING BY THIS BUSH."

The lioness stops the distress call from the calf immediately to avoid the buffalo herd coming back. A very experienced buffalo hunter.
Nope, it heard the calf and came to kill it.
Gonecrumb Deviousplot actually I believe it's both.
I know it tried to silence it, but I'm saything that was not the orginal reason why it came over.
Gonecrumb Deviousplot They never said that’s why it came over.
The herd is not going to come back, and lions don't think like this anyhow. She attacked it anywhere above the neck because that's what they normally do for the killing blow, no ulterior "silence the calf" motive

The calf forgot a very important lesson. When your herd runs away, follow them.

this calf could barely walk let alone outrun a lion.

Did you happen to hear the Buffalo Calf's skull cracking twice after the lion got a hold of it? That is a strong bite. Didn't want the Calf crying out anymore to attract reinforcements. Very entertaining.
The sound of a skull being crushed
Pinhead - Hellraiser. What was that crunching noise then?
Thanks for the explanation. I definitely heard camera clicking.. But the sound is different from the sound the lion is making when its biting repeatedly. I think those are two different noises. The camera clicking is coming from the right, but the biting sound is coming from the left. Or maybe my hearing is just awful :)
I believe you. Maybe its not crunching, but the teeth scraping across the skull? Like its trying to get a grip as opposed to intentionally trying to crush its skull. I can see the other lions come in to do the choking like you mentioned. Thanks for the info!
The sound is the skin crunching as its punctured.
Maybe not crushed but teeth meeting bone for sure.

if you are referring to why he didnt run away with the herd? I think baby buffalos this small only follow their mothers regardless of where the herd is. No wonder he panicked and started calling for his mom.
he seemed injured, and was slightly limping as he was turning about. it's weird though. under normal circumstances, cows don't leave their calves behind, even if the herd moves on. could have been an inexperienced (or possibly dead) mother and/or a calf too weak to follow them
Michael Wilkinson It was there from the beginning. The herd ran past him. It was weird. It's like he was injured, weak or just a bit "special". Bc usually they run with the herd.
Very young - look at him when he turns around. You can still see a wet spot on him, which is amniotic fluid still drying. He had literally been born most likely within the past 60 minutes.
