THIS VIDEO WAS NOT STAGED. THE BABY BUFFALO WAS LOST FROM THE HERD, WHICH IS NOT UNCOMMON.
This video from the Masai Mara was shot on our trip in May of 2009. It's tough to watch if you're an animal lover, but it shows nature as it is intended to be. Predators and Prey. THIS VIDEO WAS NOT STAGED. THE BABY BUFFALO WAS LOST FROM THE HERD, WHICH IS NOT UNCOMMON. The herd is actually less than half a mile away, but the baby is too young to catch up. Our guide explained that often times male lions will run into herds of buffalo specifically with the idea of creating confusion so the babies will get lost. What you can't see in this video is that under the tree where the lion comes from is another dead baby buffalo that he killed. This lion seemed to know what he was doing. And for those who feel we should have saved the buffalo, I understand the instinct to save the animal, but on safari you don't do that. The lion has just as much right to live as that buffalo, and lions live by killing animals. If that isn't something you can understand, don't watch this video. Thank you to everyone who likes the video.

  • I saw the whole piece on Nat Geo Wild. This was definitely not staged. The male lion was what's known as a rogue lion, meaning he didn't belong to a pride and was actively looking to take one over. In the meantime he obviously needed to eat. He had learned how to scare parts of the buffalo herd, which can number in the hundreds, and make them scatter, mostly the mothers with young calves. The big bulls would put themselves between the lion and the mothers, to which then the lion would sneak around back and panic them again. He repeated this until a calf got separated from its mother, at which time he wouldthen overtly run at the herd and drive it away. The calf's instincts are to stay put next to any cover, in this case a tree, until its mother comes to collect it. The lion is the top predator in this particular ecosystem, and their role is to keep prey animals to numbers which the available grass and water can sustain. Without predators, the numbers of buffalo and antelope and zebra would swell to numbers which would quickly exhaust all available resources and they'd all die. Keep that in mind before you curse the next predator you see make a kill.

    @RafaelSantiagoBuenoArdila@RafaelSantiagoBuenoArdila6 ай бұрын
    • Glad you liked the video! I'd agree my wording is a little funny, but "can" works because it's phrased with "If that isn't..." I could have written, "If you can't understand that..." then you'd be correct, and honestly, it would have been a better way to phrase it probably. :)

      @Tonetare@Tonetare9 жыл бұрын
    • First of all thats not true and second why shouldnt they do this ? Why should they go to hunt a adult buffalo which will probably hurt or kill them while a young one would be much easier because guys like you wont think they are scared or not brave enough !? With this attitude you wont survive in nature . Really man bevor you are writing bullshit first think about it 😧!

      @andonisioakim9544@andonisioakim95449 жыл бұрын
    • Andonis Ioakim Um "Bevor [sic] writing bullshit first think about it?" Sounds like you're the one who needs to think before writing more so than I do. And I said something it's own size? Last I checked an adult buffalo is not the lion's size. There are plenty of prey animals in Africa that are the lion's own size from Zebra, wildebeest to different species of antelope and the list goes on. Adult buffalo are not the only selection in Africa. .Again, lion's the so-called kings of the beast go after animals in big packs or much smaller than them even as you just acknowledged.

  • I once read that if you’re ever in a situation where you’re in front of a lion (hope no one is) that if you look at him directly he will be a bit intimidated as face to face is a sign of competitiveness amongst animals in general. It does not mean he won’t attack you but there might be some hesitation on his part as he will see you as a challenge and that, for what its worth, can give you a very small chance of survival.

    @itslikethesamebutdifferent8020@itslikethesamebutdifferent8020 Жыл бұрын
    • I don't know about looking at them in the eyes, but you definitely do not want to turn your back to them or run. Most times a lion will simply mock charge you as a warning to give them space. If you back off slowly but surely and never turn around, there is a very likely chance they won't attack. Lions don't generally see humans as food. If you show clearly that you're not a threat and that you are leaving their space, you have the best chance of survival. That's all based on the my many conversations I've had with guides while on safari plus years of watching nature programming on TV. I'm not what I would call and expert. So if you do get eaten by a lion, please don't blame me. ;)

    • Yea don’t do that lol. If you read about it, staring a lion in the eye causes them to take it as a sign of a challenge. It’s similar to someone random just staring at you. Depending on the individual, most will either confront the issue or feel uncomfortable. It is said to keep an eye on them so they know that you see them and they aren’t sneaking up but do not stare them in the eye.
