Capitalism and justice are ugly partners.
"Lunar" by Tyson W. Johnston
More About "Lunar":
A life sentence regardless of the crime. A destitute Earth stricken with hunger and crime. A planet where the smallest of infractions can result in the gravest of consequences. Tyson Johnston’s LUNAR makes the last frontier a one-way ticket to a hellish nightmare for Earth’s convicts they can no longer support. Taken from their homes to the Lunar penitentiary, these men with a penchant for breaking the law find themselves on a moon that thrives of the absence of justice. The new wild west, where there is no law and their fate is determined at the hands of a government where there’s no one to account for their actions. But one man may have found a way for their voices to be heard. A way to escape and tell the people of his home planet of the atrocities they’ve been subject to. A way to seek justice for the harrowing sentence he’s been dealt and if justice can’t be found, revenge.

  • A novel appeared in 1966 by Robert A. Heinlein, called "The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress". It was about a lunar penal colony where, after time, both convicts AND guards could no longer return to Earth fue to the Moons lower gravity weakening proples bones. It was slright to have a short visit, but snything longer, than say a month, would cause irreparable damage to their bones.

  • Storytelling tip : you have to give us, the audience, something earlier in the story which lets us believe what happens later in the story. Top question: why should we believe that a low-level thief who cannot even steal a loaf of bread can overcome the entire crew of a lunar transport run by a powerful, advanced, authoritarian government? Close second: why should we believe that this same thief, returning to the same city and area of that city where he was caught before isn't going to just be caught again? Other questions abound: How is he able to pilot the shuttle? Does this same powerful, advanced, authoritarian government have zero defenses between the Moon and the Earth? Where would he take the info he learned to broadcast it? Why would he be believed? (Again, in a world dominated by a powerful, advanced, authoritarian government.) etc., etc., etc. Yes, there is such a thing as willing suspension of disbelief, but as the storyteller, you have to give the audience something that makes us willing.

    • Connecting the dots would strongly suggest the back story you seek. This could be the teaser for more to come. In which case, the unrevealed explanations would pique interest and be manifest as the story unfolds. For example to the questions "Does this same powerful, advanced, authoritarian government have zero defenses between the Moon and the Earth? Where would he take the info he learned to broadcast it?", the revelations might include that he has allies on the inside. This would also explain one of the dots, which is his absolute confidence that he would be returning to Earth. Enough is revealed to inspire thoughtful speculation and pique curiosity.. Storytelling tip: Not all stories have a chronologically linear progression.

    • @@melissareiter2962I'm old, and what you say isn't new; it's been going on for as long as I can remember. What I see here are depictions of traditional roles in order to tell a story, not social commentary on how women are put in places they never belonged. Would the story be different if the roles were reversed? Maybe, but not much. Like the other commenter said, you're seeing what you want to see, and I would add that it's not the story. If you want to be critical, there are other comments to make about this short that are more relevant.
