  • Those seven people hit the Jackpot, and probably don't realize it yet. So what if the craft can only take 2 people. They haven't researched to see if it can make multiple trips. Or if there is a communication system to try and contact anyone already in that Lunar sanctuary. Heck, they still haven't noticed the area with the sign saying QUARTERS on its wall, which means there could be access to food, water, and possibly even medical supplies or aid. The good news is they have someone in their group who can possibly hack or access any information they need.

  • Really excellent. In particular the weathering: Props, surrounding objects and people, all is simply outstanding. We have too often seen films where people looked too clean, too fresh, and objects around them just like out of the trash bin. Incredible work making them look...weathered . The end is great too. Let people think, put in their shoes, and decide how they would react.

  • Excellent. Solid acting, and writing, and directing: For example, the anxiolytic meltdown and the responses of people who understand his condition, was perfect. I am really impressed. Many of the DUST shows are not of this quality or suffer too much/too little dialogue/weak backstory inferences, etc. This....really well executed. I see comments asking for an extension to the story (another episode)...but, I don't agree. I see the story as complete. Its not about what happens next (i.e., who gets to go in the transport/who lives), its about the oxymoronic circumstance: Makes you think - were their lives better or worse before this happened? Anyway - great job to the makers!

    • @justinklenk - Thanks for the reply, but 'anxiolytic' in the context I stated is correct. An anxiolytic meltdown is an activation of the nerve cell connections between the amygdala and the prefrontal cortex...basically an inappropriate fight-or-flight response. Not to be a meany about it, but I have a graduate degree in this, so your definition only applies if I was speaking about an 'anxiolytic drug', not a neuro-cognitive behavioral exacerbation. Still, good work :)

  • I really liked it. Great acting across the board. The woman trying to think of some positive things to say really seemed like she'd been through a lot and really had to work at coming up with something. I'm guessing that there wasn't a huge budget, but that final scene with of the shiny white (hope) technology in contrast to everything else was great and top notch. More money wouldn't have improved it a bit. And the final question (for me) isn't who goes. It's whether or not there's anything at the other end. Or if you'l ever awake from that long sleep. Or even if the company was just a scam. Might be better off walking 1000 miles.

  • It would have made a lot more sense if Warren knew the code to his brother's bunker (maybe Sarah told him or he knows his brother uses the same passcode for everything), rather than random dude does some "computer stuff" by waving his hands about and magically cracks the code in 15 seconds.

    • Warren is not the person from the beginning. He most likely didn’t know the passcode. I think he didn’t even know there was escape pod in there. If he knew it, he would have slipped in the bunker when he was searching shelves. Alone. And the brother from the beginning is that one man who punched Warren in the face. From what they’ve said he was a prison guard, and when he called his brother in the beginning it looked like he was in the middle of riot or something. So… it seems that they have just found random person’s private bunker and escape pod.

That's the couple from the first scene. Also, in the cellar, there's a portrait painting from the owner of the house / the guy from the opening scene. It's all very subtle, but I prefer to place those hints in a not so obvious way.

  • Reading the synopsis, I have to say that is a simple but interesting premise for a short film. Some of the best movies and short films really do depend on how well you execute on simplicity rather than a plot being original. The sort of people that keep dragging on about content not having original plots probably have no eye for a masterclass in simplicity and execution. Top Gun Maverick comes to mind as it resembles the Death Star mission in SW but the execution was more brilliant than one could have imagined which is why it out trumped it’s unoriginality and predictability.

While they all want to go there's one of their group who's proven he's becoming unstable because he had never been at the bottom before. They should choose him if only to remain somewhat safe. When these Dust shorts are produced, those chosen for the parts always bring such realism to their characters. This is another Dust short that should be continued from the point where this short ended. Because what those people were shown is hard to believe given the surrounding area and weather.

And the filming part! - storyboarding, photography as a whole, shot choices, colorization (?), editing, sound design/production, all the work done in post ... while doing this on what has to be a shoestring budget. Then there are the actors. Casting choices, oh my, _everybody_ was on! Great job as a troupe on the vibe of having been together as a group for a long time. Wow. . DUST normally has very high quality short films. Mr Reichart, this one stands out from that. Eye Emm Dee bee says this is from 2014? I hope you get to do a longer project or a full-length film. Then it struck me - we are ALWAYS going to be fighting over scarce resources, and no matter how far away and impersonal we make it with globalization or whatnot, it's the same. In this case, they get to see the reality up close, and they get to decide whether they fight to live or don't. I loved the ending, since there isn't really any ending, whether you are on Wall Street or in the post-apocalyptic wastelands.

  • I watched this years ago, maybe 10 years. Either that or I'm on a different timeline. The version I saw was edited differently with the survivors talking about who would go in the end. Or at least that's what I remember.

  • Great Job! I was waiting for the end zinger...You didn't disappoint. The rest could hang out in the quarters seen at the back of the room, or maybe there's more than one craft? great possibilities there, left to your imagination.

  • Part II: The group draws straws then turns on itself, and after arguments, bloody fights and finally fatal blows, there are two survivors. They take the seats, and the pod leaves. After several silent moments, ANOTHER pristine gleaming white pod rises up amid the carnage of blood and corpses. The computer presenter then appears and obliviously begins her happy hopeful spiel all over again..

  • I love the cast, and even in the brief time we know the characters I really really like their dynamic. Survival group that genuinely seem to actually care about each other and don’t just jump down each others throats. Tho I’ll say with that ending: I would NOT want to be one of the people in that pod. How do you know the facility is going to work? I don’t trust like that.

  • after what they just came through i'd be happy to just be in that room, plus it said quarters in the back so the place had to be prepared for many people to sustain life, and since i like happy endings there was all the comforts of home back in there.

  • So far I’ve only watched half of the short movie at 10 minutes 16 seconds. The bleakness after a nuclear holocaust would most certainly break 98% of all people to despair and depression. Hope is the answer! For survival!
