Bonjour à tous, its been a while since we seen the family go out for an antique shopping trip, and with having Rob & Abe over its a great option to visit one of Terrys favourite places.
With a chandelier in the car and a huge mirror its time to head back but on the way back the trio stop off at a beautiful abandoned house, waiting for the right person to save it.

About us,
We are a family from the North-East of England following our dream to restore a beautiful abandoned french Château. We discovered the heart stopping Château De Lalacelle in summer of 2020, this beautiful architectural monument Is set in the countryside of North-West France.
The moment we visited the Château we all fell in love, from the beautiful sweeping landscape and forests, to its stunning untouched interiors and magnificent spiral staircase in the turret.
Unfortunately Château De Lalacelle has been abandoned for a number of decades so will need a lot of restoration and DIY.

Yes, I’d keep it wood colour but add gilding wax to highlight the mouldings. It would work well then with the brass wall lights. You could also add gilding wax highlights to the other wooden furniture to tie it all in.
That abandon house is truly amazing and Rob you must investigate more. Would love to see brought back to life by someone who would treasure it. Thank you Terry for taking us through the brocante, such a treat.

The trunk is a wedding trunk, used by a newly married lady to keep her new linens and clothes. They are lovely at the foot of a bed to keep extra blankets and such.
I Love how happy Chandeliers make Terry 😊 and I bet Terry looked just like Johnathan when he was a little boy 😊

I think the mirror would look better in a natural wood stain. It's so cool how all the chateau owners know each other and help each other out when they're looking for certain pieces!
Whatever you do will be nice, but I always prefer the natural wood whether light or dark to paint. Also, thanks for posting the go fund me. I’m a retired teacher, so Jonathan’s school needs are very dear to me. It looks like the fundraiser will exceed the goal which is awesome.

Oh Terry, the mirror is a little work of art. The wood is so beautiful, personally I think painting it would hide some of its beauty and incredible age. You paint a old piece of pine, this mirror is no piece of pine. Give it a good polish and wax and it will forever thank you. xxxalex

Oh good! I feel the same, polish it up, and enjoy that beautiful wood grain. I also like the idea of gilding the light fixtures, love how gracious and dignified the the carved wood scones are. Terry will bring it to life!

I loved the mirror the first time you saw it, so I’m so happy you were able to purchase it. I think in my mind I spent more than $20,000 at the brocante! Those chandeliers (Carole would love them) are stunning, and the furniture is so beautiful. I think that house is perfect for Rob and those gates are spectacular. I wonder what the price is. Terry, I think the mirror will look lovely in the dark wood, I'm so glad you were able to get it and at a great price. The Brocante you guys were at has soo many gorgeous items, the linen trunk was amazing, I also seen a table that I would love to have, unfortunately I'm much too far away😮💨 The abandoned property looks in great shape from the shown views and the gate is beautifully elaborate, nice spot for Rob!😉 It's beyond wonderful what 'all are doing for the school!💓
Keep the mirror in its natural state.. It will better hold its antique value . just wipe some lemon oil on it , wait 2 days & wipe again with a clean dry cloth. Redo once annually. ❤😊

That was a fantastic video. I loved the brocate it was so exciting. I would paint the mirror the light blue because you have lots of natural wood in the Chateau that this would add a new dimension to the room. The linen box would look great at the end of a bed, it could hold extra quilts for cool evenings and also be used as a seat.

So many beautiful antiques. I would have a hard time not overextending my budget. The mirror is beautiful. I would do the wood in a darker color. It will look amazing.

My vote is for the darker wood wax. Paint would look fine too, but it’s pretty a permanent decision without a lot of work to restore. Because of the distressed mirror and old painting, the dark wood seems more compatible than a shockingly fresh paint job.

I had no idea Rob was looking to relocate. How fab it would be to have such a good friend so nearby. I hope that house really does suit him. As for the mirror it is fantastic. Please, PLEASE, don’t paint it. Bring it back to its natural wood or stain it to match the other dark wood furniture in the room. Painting it would be sacrilege! As a matter of fact what can be done about the foxing on the mirror itself? To replace it with new mirror clearly is inappropriate but is it possible to get the worst of the foxing removed and have it providing a good reflection? It’s all getting so exciting now, all the fun is starting after all the hard graft of providing all the good foundations to the rooms. Things are going to progress quickly from now on. Best wishes to all the intrepid shoppers, you have no idea how envious I am of your brocantes, antiques here in Australia are few and far between and when you do find what you want it’s hideously expensive. A piece like that should remain as it is in the natural wood with a good cleaning and waxing to bring out it's natural beauty. Painting it would only cover up what it was meant look like originally. What a lovely day spent in some lovely places with some lovely people. 😃Love all of your finds! I'm for darkening the mirror rather than painting it, but I'm one of those people who struggle to paint any carved wood, unless it's really damaged. Also, I'm for repairing (if possible) and keeping the original sconces.

Love the trumeau mirror. I would suggest you leave the original sconces on it and simply gild them instead of replacing them. Alternatively, you can use a gilding wax for a softer look. Carole can offer some direction too, with all her experience.

Absolutely! Some artisan long ago carved them so beautifully and their style matches the piece as a whole. I wouldn't stain it much darker at all. The cherry stain is lovely. Perhaps look for furniture to match the trumeau mirror?

You can NEVER have enough Chandaliers.
You should go see Stephane Bruneau in Laval, that's where Billy Petherick buys all his good pieces. Stephane is a friend and has sold me most of my treasures, no room for more. He recently gave me two antique washbasins on legs from an old bank along with 20 metres of gorgeous wool 'oriental' carpet runner. Last year he found me a small Chinoiserie desk for a guest room, his prices are great and he is a lovely person.
The Gentleman in the oval picture exudes intelligence and wisdom - as though he wouldn't even consider going on that hair brain race across the Atlantic, and as for a capsule manufactured from bits and pieces ... non, non, non ! What a lovely peaceful painting for the sitting room. As for the Trumeau, sometimes the artiste chose the wood they did because it's right. I think it's just right as it is, with your gold touches.

I'd bet that you can bring that picture in the mirror back to life with just a bit of distilled water and some cotton swabs. However that might be, though, it's unbelievable to see the 400 suite coming together!

You should protect your paintings from further damage with Winsor and newton artists aerosols gloss varnish. It will prevent further discoloration, moisture, dirt, and damage from UV rays. It was suggested to me for an old painting by anyone famous but is till old and stunning.
That mirror at 3:50 would be nice in the bathroom to hang bathrobes on, you could attach a shelf for jewelry. Or a butler chair for the same reasons.
The mirror would be lovely with a darker stain Would also love to see the pretty painted scene restored Maybe investigate how to remove the dirt without damaging the paint?

I’ve been to this same brocante and I shared a video of it as well. They have beautiful pieces of furniture, decor, and chandeliers. I love the French trumeau mirror that you purchased! It’s perfect above the fireplace mantle.⚜️

I think the purpleish color on the crystal is from a bit of magnesium in the glass. It is seen in some of the old canning jars also.

I say just wax the natural timber of the mirror and after if you’re not happy you can always stain it darker. Cos other way around it’s more complicated 😉
