    • Surely a better idea would be a plate pushing the log onto a split wedge.?

    • I respectfully beg to differ. The helically wound inclined plane (screw) method requires a LOT less expensive hardware and no hydraulics. This is a great application of the concept. And don't call me Shirley!

  • Approximately 70+ years ago my grandfather in Switzerland designed this splitter, and after we moved to the states my dad built one in the mid 70’s using a Briggs and Stratton gas engine to get a patent and sell to a large company. John Deere, Briggs and Stratton and several others were very interested in it, but as some of you have stated they couldn’t come up with safety features, keeping someone from sucking their hand or worse through it. It’s still the best splitter I think, glad to see some of you building off my grandpa’s idea

  • This is a valuable addition to my woodwork collection kzhead.infoUgkxkNYRBJuiJ6EwD-tQSAlxg0eFKsnR2cgz I still will rate this woodwork plan as the best in my reference library. It always seems to stand out from the rest whenever you go through the library. This is a masterpiece.

  • As someone mentioned before, some emergency stop is a must for this kind of machines, because like it or not, accidents happen, and machines don't forgive. this is a great project though :)

    • Your computer needs an emergency stop switch, timed for 5 minutes, so you get off your ass and actually do something instead of being the internet safety police.

    • This is false , it use 2x more when stoped, compared when runing. www.wired.com/2011/11/power-and-electric-motors/ And even if that is case, your safety it thing u can not buy

    • Shut-off switches are a darned good idea to include with any tool or machinery that could be dangerous that way, lockouts are imperative while working on the stuff... There was a technician working on an elevator on board a cruise ship (A Carnival Ship, if I'm not mistaken.) And the worker either forgot to put a lockout on the circuit, or someone tampered with the lockout, and he was literally sliced in two And a passenger got video of the scene with he waterfall of blood... The cruise line tried to buy it off the passenger before they uploaded it, but they wouldn't sell it. They cruise under the laws of Panama, and they haven't got the worker safety laws we have in the US. Most of the copies were taken down, it was awful.

  • I can see how a screw type log splitter would be more dangerous, but as long as you don't wear loose clothing and be careful im sure you'll be fine. and when i saw this i thought I've never really seen these commercially available, but to me the screw type seems faster to reset the next log, no pulling a lever or pushing a button, just push on the next log and boom, there ya go. plus I've seen some of the smaller "hydraulic cylinder wedge" type splitters struggle on not even very big logs... but because the screw type is always spinning and is sharp, it cuts through as it splits and never slows down. I really like the screw type, especially if there is a gas version for my acreage where splitting literally tons of logs by hand with an axe gets quite tiring, I do find it fun, but when you just need wood quick for a fire, the convenience of a splitter would sure be nice.
