Keep in mind that everyones body is different, but I wore a continuous glucose monitor(CGM) for over 30 days and tracked what I ate with the Levels app. Here is what happened with my blood sugar after i ate meals that were low carb, high carb, and complex carb.
I was diagnosed with diabetes 2 weeks ago. I am 29 years old. I was hospitalized in the ICU for 12 days with Diabetic Ketoacidosis and acute kidney injury. I couldn't walk or keep any food down. I was even vomiting up water. My glucose levels were in the 500, with a A1C of 14. Two weeks later, my glucose is 75 - 100 and feeling great now. I just avoid most carbs, but thank you making content like this.
How'd that happen? Scary...
What was your average diet before? Like daily soda or desserts?
Would you mind if I ask can you eat plant based pastas made with lentils, cauliflower, etc without major spikes?
@@Broken4forever A1C of 6 is considered pre-diabetic, some doctors says that less than 5.7% is considered "normal". An A1C of 14 is beyond the moon.

100% insulin resistant type 1 diabetic here - I absolutely agree with all of this! Make sure your carbs have fiber and major spikes don’t happen. People don’t realize that even if you’re NOT diabetic you should be mindful of glucose spikes. Thanks for a great video Bobby!

@@patriciashuskie824 I am a type 1 diabetic - no matter how much I exercise my body will NOT produce insulin. I need to take correct dosages accordingly, same is true for a type 2… the meds prescribed to all diabetics are meant to mimic a healthy persons insulin secretion, so in theory if you’re taking correct doses than results shouldn’t vary too far from Bobby’s

I'm diabetic and have been since the age of 13, I have been treating my diabetes by my eating habits, some foods don't bother my blood sugar and other foods does raise my blood sugar, so I just flat out refuse to eat the foods that raise my blood sugar, I don't eat for entertainment, I eat for survival and my good health
Excuse me for asking but I've heard that type 2 diabetes is reversible/curable is that true?
Yes it can be reversed, but you have to be very careful what you eat, because you can still push blood sugar back into being out of wack, when you push your blood sugar out of wack it can take twice as much time to get it back under control

Yeah, same here, type 1 diabetes sucks and it is NOT fun to wear a glucose monitor and test your blood sugar constantly just to stay alive. I find this video insulting, the dude CLEARLY knows nothing about diabetes, especially type 1. It isn't just the carbs in foods, but mainly the glycemic index and load which he never mentions, so why is he doing a video on diabetes????? I mean wearing a glucose monitor for a MONTH does NOT make him some sort of expert. Plus it isn't just food that makes your blood sugar spike, diabetics that wear a monitor find that out REALLY quickly. You can literally eat nothing and watch it spike really high. What he should have titled this video, is what foods helped his blood sugar not spike as someone that has a healthy metabolic function.

i just stay away from carbs pretty much all day long. I don't have breakfast, I have a brunch/lunch of eggs/bacon or left over steak. Dinner is pretty much just a piece of meat (steak, chicken, pork, fish or a salmon patty). I may have a garden vegtable, I don't have salads very often as even the carbs from salad (with olive oil/vinegar dressing) spike blood sugars. I have been a type 2 for years now, was pregnant with last child and got gestational diabetes. ALways had hunger issue's as a growing child/teenager/young mother. Diabetes runs in cousins, fatness runs in all my relatives, they are as round around the middle as they are tall. Almost all of em die from some type of heart issue's. But most of them DRANK/SMOKED like barfly's. I do not, never did. Anyways, food is a nightmare for me, and I miss chocolate ice cream runs to the dairy queen with hubby, I miss getting a cheese cake for bday dinner celebrations. I miss chips, pretzels, choc chip cookies, french fries, mashed potato's and macaroni salads. Life is a bitch.
For my occasional treat as a type 2 diabetic, I find the keto Rebel ice cream pints won't spike my glucose nor will the common cheese cake keto recipes with strawberries/raspberries. As a chip substitute, I found a great recipe for super thin zucchini slices which get dehydrated or oven-toasted after being coated in olive oil, rolled in tomato paste powder, sprinkled with Italian seasoning, and then covered in cheese (parmesan/mozzarella). They come out tasting like a pizza chip!

If you get these spikes as a healthy man that should tell us all what foods to avoid especially if diabetec. These simple carbs are non nutritious and we should all take note.

Thanks for the great video Bobby and for taking the time to experiment with your CGM! As a pre-diabetic I've been wearing a CGM for almost 3 years now...so helpful! I'm no longer pre-diabetic, but must be mindful to keep it that way.👍 No shock on that first breakfast causing a spike! Corn, rice and flours are best for me to avoid for my blood sugar. Fiber, protein and fats will keep the sugar level. Glucose Goddess is good to follow on Instagram for others who are pre diabetic, diabetic or who have metabolic syndrome. For potatoes I do fine if I grate them, do cold bath, rinse and drain them, then saute them as hash browns...less good if baked for the blood sugar. Keep these videos coming...LOVE what you do. Appreciate your plant-based options. 💗

Here in England we have some health food shops, Costco and supermarkets like Asda (Walmart) where I live but they don’t stock the massive variety of health foods you have, I wish we did…ps…I love the way you say ‘tummy’ it’s a English word we use and it was funny to hear it in a American accent 😂

I am 71 and was diagnosed with diabetes about two months ago. I ended up in the hospital with a 500+ blood sugar reading and was there for two and a half days. I'm feeling great now and am on fast acting insulin three times a day and long lasting insulin at night. My glucose readings are down pretty much in the 90s to 120 throughout the day. I stick to pretty much the same foods and have exactly the same breakfast every day - organic steel cut oats, Organic Valley full fat cottage cheese, and either organic strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or blackberries, with brown sugar Swerve (no carb) sweetener. Mix this all up and it's a great porridge! What's funny is that after about four hours my glucose can read one day at 98 and another day at 115 or 120 - and that's with the same berries! I read up and was told at the hospital that many things besides food effect glucose readings, and I've found that out. I go by the Zone Diet Plan which is great for diabetics and I've lost 15 pounds already and have my energy back! The only high density carbs I have are the steel cut oats - 2/3 cup and that has fiber and protein. Or a piece of Ezekiel bread. The rest of my meals are protein and low density carbs. This usually keeps my glucose in check but I do have to make sure to follow a quite strict schedule because otherwise it will dip too low and that is not good either. I got very bad symptoms from the hypoglycemia a few times, so I am cautious about staying on schedule! I'm learning as I go along and my husband and I took a week's vacation a while ago and that was a learning experience of traveling with diabetes!
I was diagnosed 3 yrs ago at 58 I have read some books , Think like a Pancreas and Dr Bernstein Diabetic Solution. Podcast Juice box is the main one lots more are available. You Tube for education and recipes. I substitute lots of things for carbs. I am on the Tandem insulin pump and Dexcom..The pump is perfect for me. Diabetes will change with the years. There's a big Diabetes type one community out there. Your not alone.
I was diagnosed in July (little more than two months). I am 31. I have not heard of the zone diet. I will look that up. Good luck on your adventure with type 1!

stay away from oats and fruit until you heal your insulin resistance. Oats turn into sugar in your body and will drastically spike your glucose. If I were you Id go full carnivore for the next 30 days and see how you feel. Check out out Dr. Berry's channel for everything Diabetes.
Bobby's intro includes a disclaimer that is his response to the foods and that he is aware he is quite metabolically healthy. It's for illustrative purposes and education. My takeaway is that if certain foods can elicit big spikes in someone like him, imagine what they can do to a diabetic or prediabetic.

I was going to say , diabetics react 100 percent differently than someone who is metabolically healthy. Great he put the disclaimer in his post.
And no matter whether you are diabetic or not, your blood sugar does spike after eating. That is natural and happens to everyone. The part that is a problem for us diabetics is that it does not come down rapidly like his does and is consistently higher. We've become insulin resistant.
That’s what I was going to mention… a person with Type 2 diabetes would spike much higher than Bobby AND would take hours to come back down. If someone is trying to reverse Type 2 diabetes (like my skinny husband is doing and can’t afford to lose weight) they need to avoid all processed carbs until they become insulin sensitive again. Which takes longer the longer a person has had diabetes, even years. But it’s worth it.
@@juanramos.jr.7948 Also, if you are diabetic and taking a shot of insulin before you eat, how can you accurately measure a spike? There may be no spike if the fast acting insulin is covering it, or a small spike if it's not covering it well - it's so non-specific, hard to accurately measure a so-called "spike". Does one have to NOT take their pre-meal insulin in order to get an accurate spike measurement???

Since i do clean keto plus i do OMAD fasting for the past 5 weeks,and my blood sugar came way down from 420 down to 89. I stop taking all the diabetic meds. I feel much better,and i will never want to go back to those toxins meds ever

Hi Lisa. I just wanted to let you know that Walmart has the Ezekiel bread. I'm not sure about their English muffins but I do get Ezekiel sprouted bread in the freezer section. ( It's in there because it has no preservatives). You can also get coconut sugar and monkfruit there. These are reportedly much better for diabetics. I think I've seen the cauliflower thins but don't quote me on that one! A lot of Bobby stuff is in the "alternative food" section which is just sad because most of what people buy is pure death food and I think we have to educate people better, as well as make these foods mainstream and affordable. This was an excellent video distinguishing the three types of meals and how they did or did not spike your blood sugar. As a type II diabetic, this was extremely helpful. I appreciate the time spent producing these in-depth reviews, etc. thank you so much for categorizing the meals and how they affected your blood sugar. It allowed me to know that I want to eat complex carbohydrates mostly but keto products such as rice. Thank you again and keep up the great work.
do not eat like him...youre diabetic which means you dont metabolize carbs like him...you could do damage if you eat based off how he reacted.

Try looking into the Zone Diet Plan. It's recommended for diabetics and is easy to follow and utilize. It explains very clearly what and how much of certain foods you can eat. It's low carb and concentrates on a lot of low carb vegetables, and fruits. Also includes various low saturated fat meats. The listings are categorized under "best choices", "fair choices" and "poor choices" of high and low car vegetables and fruits. So it's up to you to make a good choice! LOL The web site also has books that are helpful regarding eating out and how to choose wisely at different ethnic restaurants. I'm able to keep my diabetes in check and I've lot 15 pounds following this eating plan. I highly recommend it if you are looking for diabetic friendly foods to eat! Stay well!
Getting off all bread and starches, including pasta, rice and potatoes helped me tremendously. Lost 33 pounds over 9 months. If I eat bread, I make mine with almond flour. Still remaining on keto and it has paid off. On no meds

Eating sweets is not my favorite, but if i take a large portion of them, my blood sugar level rises high. I think it's the high concentration of the glucose flowing into the bloodstream all at once. This is a lesson worth taking note of. This is a great material to learn from.

No matter whether you have diabetes or not your blood responds to carbs with spikes. It's how our bodies work. The thing with us diabetics is that our spikes are higher and last a long time. Whereas a nondiabetic's spikes go down fairly rapidly and stay low unless they ingest carbs.
I would love for you to do an episode for all types of sugars especially monk fruit, plus I'm a avid watcher of videos great content!!!!!!!!!

I'm hearing more and more people getting the Dexcom or Freestyle meters. I have used both as a T2 diabetic. Please take note that you still need a fingerstick glucose monitor to calibrate the ongoing meter. Sometimes you get a sensor that can be 70 points off! You constantly recalibrate. Then you might get one that's pretty close. Also note the Dexcom and Freestyle are about 15 minutes behind. The fingerstick is accurate. It's also very expensive and a lot of insurance is a pain about it even for diabetics.
T2D here, have to eat ketovore to maintain a 5.6 A1C. If I eat ANY carbs, I can get a blood glucose spike that lasts 8 HOURS or more!

Being Type 2 Diabetic, I'm not sure how accurate this information will be coming from someone who isn't Diabetic at all. I feel the results will be far different on someone like myself, but I still appreciate the info.

Ezekiel bread, peanut butter and banana. 1 large cup of coffee black nothing added but a filtered ice cube.
I just recently learned that bananas are high in carbs and now I'm looking at them sideways... but I love them.

Being diabetic type 2, spikes take longer to come down then someone that not is diabetic. spikes are higher and longer since, the sugar has no place to store in your cells.

This is amazing! So many times I feel overwhelmed just thinking of what I can eat that’s not chicken and veg.
I would suggest to anyone who is type 2 diabetic (and pre-diabetic), to also check out Dr. Ken D. Berry's videos to get educated on what to eat/not to eat. He talks about the "proper human diet".
Just looking at him and how he has declined over the last 10 years should open your eyes that he is not healthy.

I'm Type2 diabetic who must inject insulin R a half hour and before eating anything. This video is very helpful so I will try some of the products you tested and see what it does to my Blood sugar spikes. I wear a Freestyle Libre 2 and it works OK . Thanks for your effort in doing this research.

Yesssss! Isn’t kitehill cream cheese the best?! Thanks for being open to vegan alternatives, small changes make a difference! And you being a role model to so many, your recommendations and approved products have a huge impact! It would be interesting to see your glycemic response on a fully plant based meal! Vegan/plant based tends to be higher carb but also depending on you choices can be high protein and definitely high fiber.
1:31 My child is diabetic and wears a Dexcom G6. Thanks for doing this! We would never give him jam with sugar or Orange juice unless he had taken too much insulin and was going low. It's so hard to guess what foods will do, but these are obviously rough to dose for. Sola makes keto bagels but I've never tried them with him. I'm sometimes pleasantly surprised by a food not reacting as bad as I would think, and other times I'm shocked that something low carb causes a huge spike. Meat will actually cause a spike. Weirdly, vegetarian chili does better than meat chili because the meat causes him to stay high a long time. That's why a lot of keto Type 1 ppl use Regular insulin, not fast acting. Meat causes slow rises.

Hey thanks for posting this man this is useful.
Hi Bobby, maybe also look into the effect of changing the order in which you eat things or how different foods interact with each other. For instance: combining carbs with fat can also decrease the insulin spikes. So maybe try rice with coconut fat or ghee.
There is also the idea of always eating your protein item first, then fats and carbs last. Also, some research shows drinking 1T of vinegar [ACV usually mentioned] diluted in a cup of water with or without lemon or lime also affects the rate at which glucose is absorbed and/or insulin is released. I love that Bobby is doing this research and posting. Exercise [i.e. walking] immediately or soon after eating is, as he mentioned, also a way to level the spike. Would be interested in seeing more tests with and without ACV, ordered eating and how much exercise would be beneficial after eating. Also, interested to know if exercising and depleting glycogen stores beforehand affects the spike.

Dont drink sodas....not even artificial sweetners. limit or avoid fruit juices....loaded with sugars.......learn to drink coffee/tea w/o sugar......stevia is OK Limit breads of ANY form as they have High fructose corn syrups READ LABLES...if you see HFCS listed put it back. Alternative sugars ARE NO BETTER than cane sugar.....keep away. Yes watch carb levels....stay under 40 a day less is best. It seems to limit foods but it's meant to eliminate processed foods as much as possible in favor for whole foods,those not man-made. Please learn now and not suffer in thefuture as I and others have. At 60 I gave up soda and started a slow change in foods to relearn my eating habits. Now at 66 I am at half the amount of insulin and down 18 lbs also I am a quadriplegic so cant do regular excercise. Good Luck

I was diagnosed as a type 2 diabetic a year ago and my latest a1c was 5.7. These ideas work, people! Eat well, exercise, take your meds! And then you have less meds to take!

My mother was type 2 diabetic and we found that high fiber and protein along with a good red wine kept her levels really even.
So you tested her with inexpendive red wine and it spiked her blood sugar?
Lol- alcohol (liquor, red wine) keep My Sugars low. Ifs not the healthiest way to manage blood sugar but much more fun 😂

I am a type 1 for 25 years. I wear a pump and I CGM. Completely different from someone playing around with a CGM. Actually, in my case no comparison. Everything turns to glucose. I take very good care of myself. Lots of trial and error.
I am diabetic and I can say I do not eat any grains anymore . It did work for a couple years but I am keto / carnivore now. I just slowly got worse. Now I am lots better and off all my insulin and meds.

As a mom of a Type 1 Diabetic, I hate when people just say, “Diabetics” as if they are all the same. Type 1 and Type 2 are completely different. And most times, people saying “Diabetics” are specifically discussing Type 2s.
It’s more important to learn the nutritional facts to help your kid instead of caring about what people think of your labels

Not to mention the many other types of diabetics that exist -- that ppl don't know about or understand, that are actually pretty prevalent. Also, ppl need to understand what type1 and type 2 actually are..& that NO 2 diabetics (no matter if they have the same type of diabetes) do not react the same to foods, insulin & other things. I am a t1, since 1980 (I was age 4), I have a t1 child (who is now 26 dx'ed at age 11) we are both insulin resistant-- have been since day 1 of our diagnosis.. for me personally-- I have worked really hard over the last several years.. to both understand how diabetes/ food & the body all work together.. & help ppl understand what is actually "normal" for the human body & what isnt.. you'd be surprised how "off" most stuff is these days regarding diabetes..
@@kimberlybargas5920 thats interesting that you are insulin resistant. How does that affect you? I would think it makes it difficult to keep your blood sugar levels consistent? I wish my son was more interested in doing research on his condition. He has always maintained himself on the “high” side while eating lots of carbs. He is young and athletic and has never needed hospitalization or glucagon shots. but I fear he’ll have trouble as he gets older. And more carbs, more insulin taken, more expense

Have you ever tested a meal with one higher carb item, such as rice, when combined with protein, lots of veggies for fiber, and a healthy fat? Just wondering if the healthier add ons would reduce the spike from the rice?
not by much as a typical serving of rice would be too much starch for any measly g of fiber to ward off all that mass of sugar it will convert into.
Good question. I know it works for me as long as it is one carb but i am not diabetic. At one time pre diabetic.
I am a type 1. I have not been able to eat white rice with or without other food and not have a huge spike. Then it seems for a couple of days after my baseline (when I am not eating) is higher as well. I had a personal trainer tell me my carb meals could be brown or white rice. So I have been finishing off my bag of white rice. So I am not sure how I would do with brown rice.
@@brittany7573 id stay away from rice as a diabetic, its just not beneficial even if you dose for it...
@@ando1135 yep, I have caught on to that. I was only diagnosed a little over 2 months ago. I have not had rice for a couple of weeks. I still cook it tho, because of my family. I have a hard time throwing food away. I was just trying to do what my diabetes team wanted me to do. Which by the way, I'm really getting tired of my diabetes team. I walk away without any new information. It has all been a waste of my time. Luckily I have experience with injections (im a dental hygienist), because they didn't even teach me how to do my insulin injections. It has been such a waste of time for me. It is causing more stress than the disease itself. All the bullshit they want me to do to get a pump is outrageous.
I’ve been eating low carb. I never took protein into account in checking if I can eat something. Wow, I will have to check out how I react. You Might be adding more foods into my diet! Thank you so much, Bobby!

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this but when you consume meals with carbohydrates it is completely normal to have an insulin spike after.
It’s still not healthy for anyone- diabetic or not -to have a glucose spike
@@patt2415 absolutely not true. It’s supposed to spike. Your body is doing exactly as it should. It spikes then goes back down.
@@patt2415 Glucose spikes are normal after consuming carbs. What isn't normal is for them to go up extremely high and last a long time.
If your body is spiking to the 130/140 range or higher after eating, you're damaging virtually all the cells in your body pretty much every minute you stay in that range. There's nothing "normal" about that. A non-diabetic going from 90 to 105 post-meal is fine. As a type 2 diabetic, I always shoot for spikes
@@juliestade7529 most people don't get this. glucose is very tightly controlled in a super healthy person. 65 to 100. an a1c of 4.5 to 5.00 is normal. both type 1 and type 2 can achieve these numbers.
All the people saying that this test was stupid or not helpful doesn’t actually understand what he is doing. He never said he is diabetic just testing Bobby approved foods on a healthy non diabetic person. Everyone not just diabetics should start monitoring blood sugars after they eat!
There’s absolutely NO point in monitoring if you’re not diabetic.
