Known as one of the strangest battles in history: The Battle for Castle Itter, an abandoned Nazi Prison Castle. This was the ONLY time in World War 2 where Americans, Germans and French joined forces to fight against the Nazis.

  • This is one of those historical events which must have a movie about them. Imagine American and Germans troops along some French prisoners, of which one was a tennis player, fighting Hitler's Waffen SS troops.

    @MatijaCG@MatijaCG Жыл бұрын
    • most of the French prisoners were actually political prisoners. One was a former PM who was recorded as taking up a spare gun from the armory and helping in the defense, the German Army major Josef Gangl actually lost his life saving the PM from a SS sniper.

  • Fun Fact: As the tennis player was running to get reinforcements he stumbled upon two SS soldiers Manning a machine gun. At this point, he switched his appearance to match as an Austrian peasant. He proceeded to take a leak in front of the two soldiers and carry on his way. Leaving them completely dumbfounded.

  • I absolutely love this story, would love to see an actual movie made about it. Just to clarify a few things. It wasn't just Nazis coming back to take the castle and kill the prisoners, it was the bloody SS. And the tennis player (at least from the accounts I read) dodged gunfire and scaled a wall to get reinforcements. The battle had a major effect on French history, cause it was major head of the French government that were being held at the castle. If they were killed, French history may have been change drastically post WWII, hence why the SS wanted to kill them.

    @stephenparallox@stephenparallox Жыл бұрын
  • To add to the team up: there was actually a wounded SS soldier still on the castle that had previously befriended the prisoners and joined them in the defense of the Castle. Also there was another instance of cooperation, involving a Cossack unit, in Operation Cowboy

And I note that the Wehrmacht fought against the SS when the war was clearly over and the Americans were winning. Noble I guess but they would have laughed in the Americans face if the Axis were winning. It’s easy to do the right thing when it means joining the victors.

  • The battle of Castle Itter was fought on 5 May 1945, in the Austrian village of Itter in the North Tyrol region of the country, during the last days of the European Theater of World War II. Troops of the 23rd Tank Battalion of the 12th Armored Division of the US XXI Corps led by Captain John C. "Jack" Lee, Jr., a number of Wehrmacht soldiers led by Major Josef "Sepp" Gangl, SS-Hauptsturmführer Kurt-Siegfried Schrader, and recently freed French prisoners of war defended Castle Itter against an attacking force from the 17th SS Panzergrenadier Division until relief from the American 142nd Infantry Regiment of the 36th Division of XXI Corps arrived. The French prisoners included former prime ministers, generals, a tennis star, and Charles de Gaulle's sister. It is one of two known times during the war in which Americans and Germans fought side by side, the other being Operation Cowboy. • For anyone confusee, the German army at that time was divided into SS and Wehrmacht. SS was Hitler‘s army, which were formed basically by nazis, and their duties had to do with murdering jews and stuff like that. Wehrmacht, in the other hand, was just the normal National Army and had nothing to do with nazism. Wehrmacht soldiers did have the swastika in their uniforms because they were still commanded by Hitler. But being Nazi, as opposed to SS, was not a requirement for joining the Wehrmacht. Also, as a German speaker, I don’t want to translate the word Wehrmacht because it sounds stupid when translated. Let’s just use it in German :D

    • This is partially true. The Wehrmacht was officially non-political, but in reality was VERY involved in the holocaust. while the SS were the main perpetrators of German Wartime Atrocities the Wehrmacht had their fair share as well (Although to a substantially lesser degree). It's not a bad thing that you said this though, it allows people like me to debunk it. The idea that the Wehrmacht were not involved in the crimes comitted by the Nazi Regieme is a still common misconceptionc called the "Clean Wehrmacht Myth". The myth originates fro just after WW2 ended and Germany was under allied occupation. The Western Allies wanted to make sure that the soon to be formed Federal Republic of Germany (or west germany) could defend itself from possible Soviet attack which meant they needed a standing army of their own. The problem is, the commanders and soldiers of this new army would have to be the same ones who just lost WW2. So, the Clean Wehrmacht myth was created to stem any public outrage this would give.

  • its historically accurate. its called the battle of castle itter. The castle was used as a prison for some high profile french POW, a member of czech resistance, and a famous tennis player. As it clear that the germans lost the war at this point the garrison abandoned their post. The french prisoner then send someone to find nearby allied troops. They find an american infantry units. Along the way they encounter a wehrmact german troops who proceed to surrender to the americans. The nearby SS troops then decide to attack the itter castle. Its dubbed the strangest battle in WW2 fought side by side by a rag tag group of american, wehrmacht, french POW, and some czech resistance group against the SS german division.

  • The castle is called Castle Itter, it was after Hiltter killed himself and Germany Surrendered. A German Weirmacht company that just surrendered to an American Airborn company and an SS officer who was also an Austrian resistance. The occupants of the castle were VIP prisoners. They included politicians, athletes and otheres. At the surrender, the SS left with a notice that they wold return to kill them all. They sent an athlete with an Austrian dialect over the walls to get help, the Americans, Weirmacht and single SS officer held off an entire SS battalion for over a day until the American Sherman tank division could arrive. The castle has not been repaired, it still bears the wounds inflicted that day.
