CHECK OUT OUR MINI-SEQUEL, "The Day AFTER Pearl Harbour," HERE: • The Day AFTER Pearl Ha... !!
-------
America has been embargoing Japan’s spicy, expansionist dreams… What will Japan do about it? And how will America respond???
In the days and months and years before launching the infamous attack on Pearl Harbor, Japan was trying to expand-into China (Manchuria). But in light of the atrocities he committed (Nanjing Massacre, etc.) the League of Nations, and particularly the United States, tried to limit this expansion by refusing to trade key resources, and placing embargoes on trade with Japan.
To the Japanese, this represented meddling in their affairs, and made war with USA inevitable. The Japanese hoped that the attack on Pearl Harbor would cow the USA into staying out of Japan’s business and keep him out of the war, allowing Japan to expand throughout south-east Asia and acquire the resources (oil, etc.) that it needed. Up until this point, USA had largely stayed out of the various wars occuring in Asia and Europe, but will that be the case after Japan’s sneaky lil’ attack…?

It was called “waking a sleeping giant” America simply by we’re it’s situated is already hard to attack, but it’s also a resources rich country with an extremely large amount of citizens. America was a a natural fortress with everything they need to survive. That’s not to mention the reputation the US military already had. America getting involved was a terrible move on Japans part.

    • At that time, Germany helped China resist Japan, China had an army completely using German equipment, and even the Mauser Arsenal provided China with complete means of production of weapons. Hitler was a nationalist, and if it was not that the feudal colonial China was too weak, then Hitler was ready to draw China to join the Axis Powers. Hitler once said that he hated the Japanese, but he had to cooperate with them.

  • Fun Fact: The first shot America Fired during the war was a 5 inch shell fired from USS Ward at a Japanese Midget Submarine attempting to scout out Pearl Harbor. The shot was fired by members of the Minnesota Naval Reserve from the Ward's No. 3 gun. The shot would land just at the base of the sub's coming tower, sinking it. The Ward would go on to become a armed transport during the war and was sunk in a Kamikaze attack. However the gun used during the sinking of the sub was removed in a refit and now sits outside the Minnesota State Capitol, commemorating my state's contribution to the opening of the war.

These countries didn’t have the military capabilities to deliver a devastating first strike such as Pearl Harbor and didn’t seek war with a world superpower. It’s the same with other interventions in e.g. Yugoslavia or Cuba.

    • Yep, not sure why people think NATO existed before WW2, we had no real reason nor requirement to help Europe, the fact that we ended up sending millions was an act of huge selflessness, not "being late" as many ungrateful people or soviet dividers put it. Now we do, and I'm glad we're all allies, it just sometimes feels like some allies fall for kremlin propaganda that implies the US was "late" to ww2, can't be late when you're not in an official alliance, and US was sick of European wars. I'm glad we ended up joining and saving the world, but it's almost like some people feel they were entitled to it and mad we didn't do it sooner, despite FDR doing everything he could to help Eurasia. At that point, sending millions of people to save other people on a whole different continent was crazy and unprecedented, even today it's still crazy, I don't remember any other continent sending millions of its own people to save another continent. I guess lots of Indians, Australians, New Zealanders, and Canadians served in WW2, so maybe that's the closest example? But they were all in the same empire, we helped completely different civs, and sent way more to help them. So yah, I still think to this day what the US did was unprecedented, instead of late, we were pioneers in a new world where democracies help/protect each other.
