  • This one hits hard. I can't count the number of times my friend has hired actors off of craigslist and then created a situation where I freaked out in front of those actors only for the video of that to go viral and then for me to lose my job because of it and then I find out later he was the mastermind behind it all. • @@sinisterthoughts2896 ok, Devil's advocate here. By the same token, there are many people who go around being a garbage person to every human they meet, generally making everyone's life worse. So I disagree that context would make 95% of these kinds of videos feel different. Unless you want to take the context all the way back to, like, the day they were born, which yeah, I suppose compassion for a crappy life would be nice. The fact that people get no social punishments for being awful to their fellow humans makes these videos appealing. You can't hit people anymore, you can't shame them in the public square. I think we all feel the world has a distinct lack of justice. But not being a Devil's advocate... Enjoying the suffering of others is probably not good for anyone. And will continue to alienate us from one another

And the guy in the car next to me was smiling talking to me making fun of me. And even tho I am pretty sure they weren't recording me the thought did enter my mind. It was just so weird I was having a breakdown from trauma, and look over to see a person just laughing at me like it's a fucking joke. That kind of thing can make a person break.

My mom pulled up to a red light and the people in the car next to us stared in horror. I'm assuming. I didn't actually look but my mom was like trying to tell them I was okay or something. Jesus christ, I haven't thought about that day in so long but your comment reminded me of it. People in my case weren't bad but shoot, it's awful that someone would laugh at you in that state. It's not like you wanted to be seen like that... yet they were looking. I'm sorry that happened to you, and I hope you got through it okay.

    • Considering the moments in the video were especially engineered to make him look bad, omitting the part where the people egg him on and push him to his breaking point, sure. I find a lot of times people lie by omission to make themselves look better, cutting out the preceding bits where they were being a complete bunghole and leaving in a sanitized narrative. Like just the other day when I saw a video of a lady complaining to a Hispanic cashier about the shop she was in playing a Spanish speaking drama, talking about how long her family had been in the area, how he needs to learn English because he's in America. Then when she realizes she's being recorded, she starts recording saying they're discriminating against her and all she wanted was her refund for her food and now they're harassing her. Interestingly, no mention of anything else she said before she started recording. I used to know people who would say things like, "I don't know why they don't want to talk to me." Or "They always give me these dirty looks," or, even better, "I don't like seeing them because they always seem to get bad at me," when the people they're talking about are minorities that they constantly make fun of. Turns out that when you meet an Asian person, most of them don't appreciate an immediate response of "I speak that!" F followed by eye squinting and hoi-hawing. I'm not saying people don't have bad days, but more often than not I've found people just have zero awareness or problem with saying stupid, entitled, and ignorant shit all the time, so when someone finally catches them on camera it wasn't a fluke, it was a matter of time.

      @LaPollaAtomica@LaPollaAtomica Жыл бұрын
    • @@Decenium Only so much though! It can hide just as much. Defining people by their worst moments with no context, is just about the worst way to try to understand someone. I wish people would just be honest about it and admit that they're a little bit entertained by things that anger them, by watching people be the worst they can be. Watching Karen videos is not a deep endeavor in understanding the nature of people and societies. You can't actually know why someone is freaking out because you don't have the big picture of their life. You can condemn the behavior, but you don't know who that person really is to the people around them or what things outside of that moment drive them, so there's only so much meaning in doing that. And frankly, it doesn't MATTER. It's not of much use to you as a judgement. They will likely forever remain a stranger to you. Again, it's just a catharsis to watch. There's no actual growth for you in watching freakouts, no grand takeaway. And if anything, I think the inherent myopicness of it as a medium for viewing people can easily send you down a dark path of stereotyping and just not thinking critically in assessing things. Stare into that void, it stares back into you, and you start to forget what normal people are actually like. You get a better picture of everyday people from reality TV.

Not in a bad way, but in the same way the others made me feel joy, this made me feel absolute dread.
