Back in the time of slavery, the Republican party was the party of the northeastern seaboard/liberals/urban population. The Democrats were the party of the farmers, rural folk and the south. Through a couple major switches in the voting blocs of the parties, they have effectively swapped who their main base is. The way to see the proof of this is easy, the Confederacy. If you see someone waving a out the Confederate flag and calling it their heritage, they're almost always going to be a right winger.
