We all know that Season 8 of Game Of Thrones wasn't received well.
If fact, it left most fans feeling either cheated, confused, or at the very least, disappointed.
But because of this negative reception, it was very easy to take for granted the incredible work of the visual effects artists and the absolutely amazing feat they achieved.
Even though Pixomondo did the lion's share of VFX shots, a total of 40 different VFX vendors worked on the Game Of Thrones series (including big names like Weta, Rodeo FX, Image Engine, MPC, Scanline, Rising Sun Pictures, and Iloura, to mention but a few.)
But season 8 alone required 14 different houses!
For the first seven seasons over 13,000 VFX shots were produced!
and season 8 alone had over 3000!
That's like producing double the amount of VFX that Pirates Of The Caribbean, Dead Mans Chest required, but in just one year, and then repeating that again and again for 8 years solid!
In order to achieve so many visual effects in such a short time they had to adopt an incredibly methodical approach, breaking down scripts and outlines before starting concept and previs work.
The previs team meticulously mapped out scenes, developed animatics with feedback from the directors and producers, and completed a technical visualization pass to figure out how to exactly bring those big scenes to life.
Obviously they couldn't shoot all of the big battles and destroy cities for real, but they did try to get as much in-camera as possible and a lot of the sets you see were built for real.
Getting as much as possible "in Camera" helped speed up the VFX process and this was crucial in order to meet their tight post-production deadlines.
Season 8 was dubbed as "Complete Trash" by fans because it left them feeling cheated.
But for Game Of Thrones, thousands of VFX artists put years of blood, sweat, and tears, all their passion, drive, and innovation into this dauntingly immense project, only to have fans undervalue their labors or have them labeled as "Complete Trash"...
so If anyone was really "cheated".
It was them.

I dont think anyone criticising the last season was remotely thinking about the VFX, it was just about story telling. When I watched the season i wasnt even thinking about the VFX, which just shows how amazing the VFX folks did their job in blending anything together.
The VFX artist did an amazing job. It’s insane what they were able to do on television. Nowadays we’re used to big budget shows, but GOT was the original beast.
Amazing breakdown, so many talented artists and companies worked on this project. So bad the last season wasn't as expected "story wise", but hats down for the VFX team. The hard work is everywhere in every single frame. Much Love
I see the special effects, but I have no idea what the actors see without the special effects.
It's called... Imagination 🌈 😁 That's why they're actors. If someone says "run and act like there's a scary dragon flying above you", could you PRETEND?

I recently rewatched this last season …after adjusting the lighting on my tv…and I was impressed by the visuals this time around. It’s cool to see this. Real down. Mad respect to the artists who did all of it. Like everyone else, I just wish the ending was written better.
I don't think anyone was talking about the VFX when they said "trash". Most people appreciate the visual effects that were put into the show. So, I don't think the show would have any effect on those artists careers.

My takeaway, it will always be the writing, the story, the intention, and the casting that counts. First time I learned this was watching Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman in Ishtar (1987). So many films just fall apart, no matter the star power or cinematography, or even today's high end visual effects.🤷♂

Pretty much everyone who worked on this show, from actors, set designers, costume department, vfx artist, and of course fans, were all cheated by Benioff and Weiss.

Um, I can reassure you that *NONE* of this season's criticism was directed at the VFX team. It was the writers who butchered it and whoever else who approved it.
