Who is this Sage Grouse seeking ?

2018 ж. 12 Мам.

Maybe some of you have an answer to this situation.
This wild female Sage Grouse has appeared here and she is not afraid of people at all.
She has been around for several days already, she follows us, waiting to come close. This is the second Spring in a row that we have this same bird here, this exact female was here last year.
It is mating season, so she is certainly looking for a partner.
I tried to research about this behavior of coming close to humans, but could not find anything.
If you have explanation or opinion to this bird's behavior, please leave it in a comments bellow.
Thank you

  • She found a safe place, her instincts tell her you will be kind to her while she seeks her mate or perhaps lost chicks. I doubt she is that willing to trust many other humans that much. The fact that she let you touch and pet her is so amazing to me. You definitely have a gifted way with the animals and wildlife of all species. Another one of your beautiful videos to put a smile on my face and a nice start to the morning while having my first cuppa. Thank you!

  • When the female drops her wings like she does, it means they are accepting of a mate (you). Looks like the good vibes you and your ranch give off are influencing animals to seek you out. Lucky man!

  • This is an anthropomorphic idea, but maybe the female grouse senses you've created a safe haven for your animal friends, and she wants to join your group. Or maybe the way the male sage grouse puffs out its chest and flails around during mating season scares her, and she imprinted on you instead. :) As you know, animals possess an intelligence we don't have. I've seen some cases where wild animals seem to like humans better than their own kind. (Just as many humans prefer the company of animals to their own kind!) The poster who mentioned that pollution of the planet is affecting animals has a point too, although I hope that's not what's going on in the case of your grouse. I also live in a rural area with a group of dogs, cats, and rabbits who are my best friends. An opossum visits occasionally...my dogs get excited when he shows up, but they allow him to roam around the yard freely. I think the opossum just gets lonely and wants to see what's up in my yard. I don't feed him, but during the winter he'll come and sleep in the dog house near my front door sometimes, and I have a heated water bowl outside, so maybe he gets a drink there too. I hope I will be lucky enough to one day save a fawn's life like you did. When I think about what it means to be a successful person, I always come back to the idea of helping animals! Thanks for your clips and for showing us how to live well.

    • Thank you for the reply. I wonder where she goes for the rest of the year? Maybe this year she'll stay within sight even after mating season is over. I found evidence that some keep wild grouse as pets: www.backyardchickens.com/threads/how-to-raise-ruffed-grouse.731439/ although this site says that grouse chicks are very delicate (I take this to mean they should be kept wild): www.trails.com/how_6119_raise-grouse.html Also found a couple of "pet wild grouse" videos that show behavior similar to your pet grouse... kzhead.info/sun/jbKto9d6ZKahhg/bejne.html and kzhead.info/sun/gMyJlbF8iomFqas/bejne.html

Sometimes I wonder if I just had my eyes open more or if they actually come to me for help. One thing that happens continually is a gift from is very odd-looking black Tomcat. Whenever one of my pets pass away, he shows up within a week with a new cat. It never fails.

  • l can't speak about a sage grouse, but when l hiked the John Muir Trail in the CA High Sierra they had blue grouse that would let you walk right up to them as they hadn't been hunted up there very much. If you want to call walking up and hitting one with a stick hunting. We had one with her chicks follow us and figured out that she expected us to feed her and her brood. l guess other hikers must have given her some oats or granola. We figured that out when she ran right up to us when we sat down to eat. Yes l fed them some oats too (he said shamefully). lol

    • That was in 1972, my son hiked the JMT last year and said there wasn't as many as l remembered and they avoided people, but you could get within 20 feet or so. But it is really a bad idea to feed wild animals, even moms with babies, as they will stop searching for food on their own. If they get like that what happens to them when winter comes and there are no people?

One day I didn't go to the pond and to my surprise, 3 ducks circled the house. I stood there laughing cuz the kids were little then and they were excited saying it was our ducks. I was in disbelief thinking there was no way it could be Hewey, Dewey & Lewey. The pond was located in the big hay meadow away from my home.. But...those 3 ducks landed in the driveway and walked up to the house quacking...."hey lady, you forgot our candy today so we had your vehicle description and found you".hahaha I'm serious! It was too funny. I hope you enjoy my stories if you read them. I just feel compelled to cheer you on in life...love your videos.

While reading some of the comment section, it got me thinking about different reasons this could be happening. Anything from the Sage Grouse being incubated or even helped in her lifetime by humans to the location being ideal for this particular female .. is she only this way with you or is there more that one human she is like this with? So interesting!! There is no doubt that you have a proclivity to nature and are wonderful with animals, they really can sense it. It makes me wonder if it's a human thing or something else ..

Even though our ancestors' fell from their original purpose which also affected the animal world, everything still has within it that ancient DNA that.looks to us for remedy. And when mankind has finally been fully restored, they shall be too. Until then, "All creation groans and travails together, waiting for the manifestation of the sons of the Most High." Until that restoration comes, you are practicing it every day in your care of everything around you! Godspeed.....

  • The Sage grouse is under pressure - like many other species - because of diminishing habits. It has been shown by marking that hens may roam widely, seeking across three or four leks to reproduce. Perhaps this one has been fed by humans previously somewhere else and, while passing through your place, hopes to be fed before finding a lek, thus enabling her to lay more eggs and raise more chickens. You might look for areas of sagebrush in the vicinity, not too dense, but also not too sparse. This is absolutely essential for the sage grouse to protect and bring up the chickens...

  • She obviously feels safe near the house but I don't know if that's the primary reason for her seasonal residency. This time of year she can probably find enough food in the general vicinity while avoiding threats posed by hungry predators prowling further away. It's amazing though that she doesn't mind being caressed so there are other factors at work. Cats and dogs can usually sense when a wild animal has been adopted and leave them alone.

  • It's possible that she was helped or even raised by humans at some point, and has decided that she's human. During the rest of the year, grouse are quite solitary birds. It's likely she's only seeking your company when it feels natural for her to be gregarious. It's sweet that you allow her to stay, she's likely quite lonely. And the fact that this is the second year means that she's clearly not finding it difficult to survive on her own so, while it's sad that she probably won't breed, she should be ok. And perhaps one day she will find a male of her own species she likes after all - it happened with several of our birds when they were older.

  • Well, since the sagehen isn't seeking zen masters, then perhaps another "sage"? Populations of sage grouse are in decline due to environment loss and decline of the pristine *plains environments it requires to mate.* The Biodiversity Conservation Alliance and other organizations have petitioned to list the grouse under the Endangered Species Act (again). Since 2010 when he sage grouse has repeatedly been proposed put on the endangered list, but this has been opposed using various dubious pretexts and strange machinations. Fx a senator from California conditioned his vote on an entirely different issue on the *postponement of the sage grouse being labeled endangered* - even though no wild sage grouse are to be found in California!? The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) investigated *cattle who share grazing land with the sage-grouse.* They found that cattle, after consuming about 40% of the tussocks in between sagebrush bushes, will continue to consume the tussocks growing underneath the sagebrush, thereby *destroying the nesting habitat for the sage-grouse.* The sage grouse isn't much of a roamer. It tends to only move for famine and will stay in the same region even if breeding conditions are poor.

  • Dear Sir, I am old and have a bit of history for you. The Loggers of Northern Wisconsin, as they daily tramped into the woods, would be met by ruffed grouse. The grouse would walk right along with them to their cutting site. Nothing new here...they are just unafraid. Believe me, 70+ years ago they were not hand raised...there were many of them. One could here them blow their chests out and beat there wings rapidly. The wings flutter against their body and a drumming effect is created. Truely enjoy your videos! It’s like how I was raised on the farm with 200 acres to run barefoot! Nature made me! Much love and star light!

  • Seems like she has been near humans & bonded with them. If a nest was bothered by an animal survivors could have been hatched by a common hen, or by a human that if she tried to return to the wild then she wouldn't have a natural fear of humans. So glad she picked your ranch where nice people will not hurt her. Seems like you are a natural "animal whisperer" & the animals know that !

  • I have 3 thoughts on her attraction to you. 1. You are a gifted animal communicator - capable of understanding or supporting her and helping her feel safe. 2. Grouse are territorial and return to same place every year. 3. Maybe she is an animal companion from another lifetime, or even this lifetime, who has returned to be near you as she misses you! 💖🙏💫

  • Maybe the way an orphan baby duck attaches itself to person as its mother, the grouse has come to know people as its family when she was little?
