Old Rusty CLEAVER Restoration
This time I am restoring a super old rusty cleaver. It looks hand forged with a maker's stamp on it. It is in terrible shape including the handle. Handle is partially made from leather and thin pieces of wood.
About The Rusty Cleaver
I did research about the maker's stamp on it and found nothing. It seems that this blacksmith was local. I would presume that he made this one for personal use since the details like tang, handle and the blade itself are not lined well and with different thicknesses. Pluss during this cleaver restoration I see the hardening hasn’t been done properly either. From what I have seen this looks like it was made out of iron, unfortunately.
The Restoration Process
I started by removing the old handle and tried to remove surface rust as much as I could with a steel brush. Then I soaked overnight old cleaver in oxalic acid solution. This helped really to dissolve the rest of the rust.
I sanded and grinded the blade multiple times, reforged the cleaver tang to be more even in thickness and slightly longer. Also I did hardening of the cutting edge.
At the and I attached freshly made wooden covers and hammered copper pins to hold the handle in place. Applied teak oil to the wood as a last step of this restoration.

Please note that this is NOT how to video! Restored items in my videos are for my personal use and they represent early 1900's. I like how restored items turned out and looking forward using them in future videos. Also it is ok to not watch my videos if you don't like old treadle powered tools, outfit and my shop from early 1900's! Remember, the choice is all yours.
Are you kidding? The shop is a great part of the video.
Your work makes me happy!
That's what sets Your videos apart from the rest !!!!
You have the most unique work shop I have ever seen. Bravo!
Love your shop and your style keep it coming….
Gotta say, I dig the cut of your and your shop's jib. Not only do you give a look into history in the early 1900's home repair shop, but you show us that dedication and knowledge can hone skillsets of a handy man. Great job!
Wow, thanks!
I like your work! It's amazing to see a job without the use of electrical equipment in the 22nd century!
Now that is some real old-school manual labor…. awesome job
Good to see you perfectly exercising while working,no fear of diabetes and what not.

I am very happy when an old and forgotten thing gets a new life!
Wow the whole theme is awesome showing us a little how it used to be back in those days
Awesome, I am glad you recognized that! Thank you for watching Greg!
Nice to watch all traditional tools. Good exercise and fun.
Thank you sir!
I like the machines and tools you use for restorations. Even better is the fact that you restore and use the restored pieces for yourself. To much gets thrown away these days. Thanks for the video, always enjoy your content.
I am glad to hear that Terry! Thank you for watching my videos and for the feedback, I appreciate that very much!
Giving 1960 vibes🥰🥰🥰
Whoever AAT was sure could fold some steel. The cross sectional views clearly show smooth evenly hammered layers as you cleaned and ground it. No doubt this bad boy will provide you with many more years of use! What a sweet ongoing life this blade is enjoying thanks to him and now you. Please show it in use if you can!
AAF sorry.
Once again, another fine job you have done. There are times that I wish I had a Grandson with your talents. I do have two Grandsons in the military. Each following me in different ways. I wouldn't give them up for the world, but I still dream.
Thank you sir. Great to hear they serve their country. Maybe at some point they will show interest in old tools as well 🙂
I love your work. I very much like the workshop. Without electricity. Perfect. Thanks. India.
Thank you very much Ramesh!
Awesome assortment of tools!
Extremely satisfying
Loving your new style, every cut is just perfect in length and all the angles makes it even better! You really put a lot of work in your videos. Wonderful work with the cleaver, I enjoyed every second😁
Thank you so much mate, I am glad you think so 👊😆
I like the way ALL the toys get out to play! I don't know what it was originaly made for, but I could think of a few uses for it now. As always, good, tidy work. Well done.
Hey Patrick, thanks again! Take care!
Wow amazing old tools
Again another very beautiful job. Thanks
Thank you too! Much appreciated!
I like how you forged out the length of the handle. Much better control of the cleaver.

Hello I realize I'm probably repeating what a million others have said, but I love your workshop! If I could have a workshop like those I see on other restoration channels with sandblasters, a million power tools, etc, or one like yours, I'd take one like yours without a moment's hesitation. (I might take the cat from the other channel)
Hey Patrick, thanks a lot for such a lovely feedback. I truly appreciate it! I got you covered, I have a cat too 😄👍

Great restoration
Thanks
NICE WORK SHOP
I'm glad you like it
brilliant, you have done a tidy job of that one, do like the use of the birch wood, very traditional and very nice to work with. One tip, although not an old way but sawdust and superglue fill gaps well and stay in place far better than PVA glue does. Good to see you have some more new tools and have been off learning new skills again and are putting them to good use, keep doing that as you are getting better and better at what you do, and the best and most authentic restoration channel I have found is getting better and better
one thing to investigate further is heat treating your steel, build a brick wall either side of your fire pot to concentrate the heat and give a bigger fire and keep moving the blade back and forth to even the heating, get the steel to a salmon pink colour and quench in oil for less risk of cracks and warping and to temper it you can heat another piece of steel and then when you have cleaned up the blade so as can see the colours place it on the hot steel and allow it to transfer heat, that way you can see the colours run into the blade and control the tempering process by dripping water onto parts warming to quickly
Thanks man, you are the only one who recognized the problem with the forge and suggested a great solution that could resolve the problem and be in the correct time period. Well done, I will definitely try adding bricks around since I am losing heat. You gave me excellent instructions on how to have better control. I really appreciate your time and great advice. I just need to figure out how best to manage all things at the same time. It is hard to focus on the hardening process itself and moving the camera around and other things rolling, but I will give my best next time! Thank you again and have a good one!
@@FFD_Restorations no worries, the world would be far better if we all shared knowledge and experiences, and I see the problems as I have as you know my very small forge and have had to find solutions to them, I am seeing you having similar issues so if I can help with sharing what I have found then great, it is worth looking at videos on KZhead of black/blade smiths from poorer countries to see how they do things without expensive tools as many solutions are to be found there, South Asian countries, India, Bangladesh etc are excellent resources for learning from
Amazing stuff, I am glad that you like to share and help others. I wish that we are all more willing to do so. Be well and take care!
Very nice! It reminds me a lot of the cleaver I made :)
Thanks Grant! Oh yeah, I remember that one now when you mentioned it 😆👍. You did great work on yours 👌
Hi, just found your channel. Love it. Subbed 🧡 I did notice one thing though. On your About page you say it is a '1900th century workshop'. We are now in the 21st century, which puts your workshop 1,879 centuries in the future. Roughly 187,900 years from now? Wow! 😁 🧡
Awesome, welcome! Thanks for the feedback, I will change that ☺️
Excellent 👍
i love your style
Thank you!
I'm from Indonesian I'm not speak English but I'm your new subcriber
That is awesome, thanks a lot 🙏 Greetings from Norway 👋☺️
Very interesting to see you work with no power tools
Thank you sir!
Tus maquinas- herramientas me gustaron.

Love the old machinery used and techniques. Great job.
Thanks Rob 😀👍
Bellissima officina.. Mi piacerebbe averne una così...
Grazie!
You should visit Beamish open air museum in northern uk, you'd fit in with your outfit! The celebrate 1900s stuff too x
😃👍👌
Muito legal!!!
I enjoy how you work using "old school" techniques, with old manual tools. I was wondering. Is your anvil hand forged?
Thank you Robert, that is wonderful to hear. I believe that is correct since it dates from around 1700.
Excelsior 👏👏🇧🇷
Really liking the Heath Robinson mechanical devices that you have about the place, can I ask also about your shirt... where did it come from? all the best "H"
Hey, thanks for the comment! This is a traditional Norwegian shirt that has been used often as a national costume on 17th of may. Take care!
Your tools are old school but camera is ultramodern.
Thanks for watching!
Pretty sweet set up you have there. Is this a family thing or did you collect all those tools yourself. Great job on the cleaver and the Japanese knife. I have wanted to learn leather work for a little while now. You make it look easy. Again Great work. I'm following you now.
Thank you Jeff. I collect all the tools by myself in memory of my grandfather. Thank you for kind words and for watching my videos!
Stunning .. like a young Burt Reynolds #phoenixNights
Great work shop ! ( We're You ever on P.B.S. on a t.v. series , something about a New Yankee work shop or something like that ?) Great chopper BTW !!! Was it a Buchering knife ?
Thanks Johnny 😊 That would be cool, but I haven't. Yeah, it was 👍
Nice restoration! You still need an oil lamp...
I really like how filmed are your videos, once again. But I must say, the heat treatment here is a little bit (to be honest a lot) uneven, didn't you succeed getting all your blade red?
Thanks! Well noticed, I had troubles to heat the blade evenly, so I did it multiple times. I need to get bigger forge. Thanks for watching!
@@FFD_Restorations I saw this but in fact you can't quench it in two parts, the heat will ruin your temper and you will get a soft blade, instead you could use a square tubing to homogenize the heat and bury the tube into the coal (the blade in the tube)
I understand, but as I mentioned, I need a bigger forge.
How did you get the cleaver reshaped so much?
It happened
@@FFD_Restorations Burnt it huh. It happens to the best of us. Coal is tricky. Turned out great though. Candy of a cane style knife now. At least you were able to save the makers mark.
Yeah, unfortunately. This was sad but great learning experience. Thank you again, I appreciate that!
Great job as always! But would not it be better to wear a mask when working with acid or during the sanding / filing process? I am worrying about your health.
Because you get dirt easly while you working. Any way you have got an interesting sixteen century work shop with out any electric power. Man!
Thanks for the feedback!
you never put music in your movies, it's too good to hear the sound of instruments and workings :-)
I did it before, but stopped because many complained. Thanks for the feedback Livio 👍
@@FFD_Restorations I'm a musician, but I prefer no music with these restorations. The peace and music is with the sounds of your old-style tools. No motors.
☺️👍
