BROKEN Old SCOUT Knife Restoration | AWESOME Recovery
Restoration of Broken Old SCOUT knife. It is in very worn condition with a broken handle, guard is bent and blunt blade. This scout knife is designed to be used by kids as a first knife. In this video I will make a new handle, grind and polish the blade and at the end assemble it.
About The Old Scout Knife
This small scout knife is specially designed for children as a first-time knife. With finger stops on both sides of the shaft, small hands will not slip over to the blade when nailing. The length of the knife blade is 3.3 in (8.5 cm). The total length of the knife is 7.1 in (18 cm). The tip of the blade is purposely oval for safety reasons. I believe this could be an old Mora scout knife but it is hard to tell since the markings on the blade are missing. There are several producers of scout knives here in Scandinavia like Mora, Øyo, Helle, Brusletto … They are fairly common here in Norway and it was not hard to find one to restore.
The Restoration Process
I started by dismantling the scout knife. I removed the broken handle and all parts from the blade. To remove scratches, rust , pitting and dirt from the blade I used a hand crank grinder, sand paper and I polished the scout blade afterwards.
In this video I made a new handle for this scout knife from walnut wood because it would be quite difficult to repair an old broken handle. I cut the piece in desired length and with a chisel, plane, carving knife I made a rough shape. Fines shaping I did with rasp and sandpaper.
I drilled the handle for the scout blade and with heat I managed to fit the blade in the new handle. Guard and bolster I cleaned on a steel wire wheel and did a hot brass transfer. It got a nice gold-ish look.
Last but not least, I assembled the scout knife. To secure the blade I haven’t used a rusty iron washer, instead I used a new brass washer. It looks much better in my opinion.

Your restoration techniques and attention to detail are excellent. You do not just restore things, and you restore them by the methods and ways they were created. Great respect to you!
Thank you sir!
Awesome Workmanship 😊 You just need to display final product finished with your Logo on it like the plastic display! Would be Fantastic.!!
Once again, work.... EXCELLENT!! But its a knife restoration not a spy movie that needs suspenseful music.
nice work. greetings from Buenos Aires
Hey 👋😀, thanks a lot!
Süper 🤩👏👏
Now I can sleep in peace 😂 Really loved the design and the safety concerns put in designing the knife. And I LOVE the firework and the smoke. Brilliant edit. Great job as always, Boris!
Nice! Thanks for watching and kind words Anisa 😃👍

Great job..love your videos..😍😍😍👏👏
Thank you! 🤗
Quedo espectacular!
Thanks, to get better fitment for the handle.
I think you are probably one of the best if not the best restoration channels on KZhead. I love your work and the attention to detail is second to none. I will say though and I’ve said it before the videos when you have no music are so much better. The music is so distracting and sounds like an old 80s porn video. It’s an instant click off when I hear the loud and annoying music.
I appreciate your feedback Greig, thank you. I understand your frustration and your point of view. Here is why I started adding music again in my videos. After making over 100 videos on KZhead platform and doing an extensive statistics comparison from KZhead analytics between videos with music and without, videos with music performing way way better. I am talking about huge differences, in perspective videos without music get a few hundred views and with music a few thousands for the same time period... I wish one day KZhead gives control to the viewer to turn off music and watch natural sound and for those who like music can turn on.
Nice! That was some amazing work.

Excellent job 👍

Thanks for the visit 😃👍
Klasse Arbeit.
Very satisfying to see this old tool brought back to its glory. The knife itself reminds me a lot of the knife I carry daily, a Ka-Bar 1256 Short Model. Very similar dimensions and design features, just in a more modern package.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching 👍
Encore une belle réussite ,bravo .
Merci mon ami 😃👍
Well done Boris! Excellent work on the handle. Take care 😃👍🏼

Nuevamente gracias.
Usted es bienvenido Sr. Nessel. Eso es excelente para escuchar. Muchas gracias 😃👍
This channel stands in opposition to the idea that you need expensive power tools to work with metal and turn out an excellent finished product. Awesome video!
Well said! Thanks!
Loved the hand buffing tool!

Good job, I find it easier to drill the holes before shaping, if you mess up the hole your not out a lot of work. Just a thought.
Great point! Thanks Robert!
Yeah I usually do the same when I first started I did what you did and was successful only 20 percent all in all great video keep it up

Hi Vince, many thanks! I appreciate watching!
Thumbs up to you nice restoration as usual like the way you made and shaped the handle to fit the knife 👌
Many thanks again, very kind of you!
Sir, It's been always pleasure to watch your restoration video ...❤️❤️❤️❤️🍫🍫
Thank you so much Krishna 🙏
I stumbled on your channel after obtaining an old Sheffield style scout knife like the one my Dad had back in the 50s (missing any stamps which might tell me more). You've taught me some invaluable tricks for getting the dull, pitted blade which was worn into a very wavy shape through decades of sharpening back into working, paper cutting order. Though I didn't go all the way to polishing it up to a mirror finish and I did cheat a little and use a dremel instead of just elbow grease to reshape the blade I now have a knife I can use every day instead of a blunt conversation piece.
😃👍
Great job, especially the reconstruction of the handle. I like your carpenter's bench, small but complete. Also for this video thumbs up :-)

Looks like a swedish mora knife
Awesome job is always my friend looks brand-new all it needs is a sheath LOL
Thanks Tristan!
@@FFD_Restorations no problem hope to see a foot pedal Dremel like you were talking about LOL

Nice restauration once again, that wood cooking stick it's the recycling intentions that I was talking about ... Nevertheless I would keep that broken handle though... In one hand it was not so broken enothough, it could still do it's job; In the other, I instal a brand new wood handle that has that broken, rustic look just to reproduce some primitive Viking blacksmith who doesn't have sandpaper at that time...jeje... Nice keep on...🥇🏆⚔️🗜⚒️🗡
Thanks for the tips! I keep all pieces from restorations, for sure at some point I will reuse it in some shape or form 😆👍 Thanks for watching!

Excellent restoration as usual...my like, greetings!!!👍
Many thanks Gustavo! Best regards!
Nice work, you have one new subscriber. By the way... What is your mini black hand planner? Model? Thanks in avance, regards from Spain.
Thank you and welcome! It is generic, does not have any markings on it. It is fairly modern...
Could it be that this is a Clam/oyster knife more than a Scout knife?
Hey! This is a tipycal Scandinavian scout knife 😉
@@FFD_Restorations Oh ok... Wll it turned out great, good job!! 💪🏻

The video was not about the sheath, it was about the scout knife as title says and the videos description 🙂
Please don’t show the finished knife at the benign
Thanks for the feedback!

Avail yourself of some power tools, ma man. It’s 2021, it’s ok to do so. Lol
Thanks!
It’s clearly not needed. He’s an artisan. These skills are gone due to “modern” tools. People who cultivate skills should be applauded not scorned.
@@lokiwartooth1138 Yeah, I’m not scorning anyone, I’m not mocking anyone. Simply stating the work smarter not harder maxim does have truth to it. I have no doubt he has the skills to do the job. You have a good day though, buddy.
@@DisgruntledGrunt right on. But as we both know if your name is any indication this new gen don’t want to work at all. They care not if it’s easy or hard. So as a hands on craftsman myself I do appreciate the skill.
