Old Hickory Knife Restoration
Restoration of an EXTREMELY RARE OLD pocket knife from Germany. This David Dominicus Pocket Knife is a timber or wood srcibe knife. I was told the timber companies had cruisers that marked the trees to be cut with this type of knife. A very unusual collectible pocket knife.
ABOUT THE OLD POCKET KNIFE
This is a VERY RARE OLD pocket knife produced in Germany. Inscriptions on the blade are David Dominicus & CO 561 Remscheid. The pocket knife is very worn out. The blade is loose and didn’t have almost any tension to it. The wooden covers were heavily damaged and metal pins bent. It is unclear how this old pocket knife ended up in Norway, but according to the seller, his father got it as a gift from a German friend. The age is difficult to confirm, so if you have any information please write a comment below!
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I started by dismantling the pocket knife. Because the metal pins were bent, I have difficulties to separate parts. After many attempts I ended up using pliers to cut the pins and hammer them out with a puncher. Metal parts were submerged in a vinegar solution for a day, grinded, sanded and polished afterwards.
I removed damaged areas from wooden covers and sanded with 120 -180 - 240 grit. This time I haven’t used any oil, but for the first time I polished the covers.
In this video I made two additional brass liners by hand and used brass pins to secure the pocket knife. Originally pins were 2 mm, but I decided to go with 3 mm.

I have the same scribe, also made by David Dominicus. I work in forestry in the UK and was given it by an old colleague. They were used here until paint/tape took over and forestry became more mechanised and the need to mark timber for niche markets sadly diminished. The only difference with mine is that it also has a handle which locks the blade shut, and when it is in use, protects the users knuckles from bark/branches. I can send a photo if you're interested. I don't have the means to take it apart but after watching your video will at least clean it up a bit! Great work.
Awesome to hear that! Thank you Gareth! Do you know how old it is? I couldn't determine age for mine. I would love to see the picture, please send it to support@findfixdonate.com. The knife is very well built, no doubt about that.
I used to use similar with the Forestry commission back in the late 90s. The trees were marked using Roman numerals , usually for standing timber sales so it didn't matter the trees were damaged by the knife as they were coming down anyway.
@@hammyh1165 thank you so much for sharing! I really do appreciate that! Take care
I have one too Gareth, not a Dominicus one but one sold by Stanton Hope and bought in the early 90s. Used a lot for marking for length and cross cutting when I was a Ranger. I've emailed a couple of photos.
@@sewob147 nice one, I didn't know they were used for that too!
Damn, what a clean, minimalist shop. I need to learn a lesson here.
Thanks for watching Jeremy 😀👍
I love seeing you using the old manual tools, more young people like yourself need to work with them , it’s more rewarding when you get done. Wayne
100 % true, well said! Thanks Wayne!
Awesome work as always. At first glance I thought it was a farriers knife
Nice, thank you very much Jason 😀👍
I think with amazes me the most, is how you pay attention to detail and that you use the techniques your grandfather taught you.
🙏🙏🙏 thank you for taking time to read about this channel. That made my day, thank you sir!
I ment to say what not with. Sorry about that.
No worries, all good sir!
You were not exaggerating about the amazing outcome - really satisfying to see this item to be saved and restored to its original beauty!
Thank you so much Dany!
i do a lot of wood carving and would love to have a knife or chisel like that
The restore came out really good , an added treat is watching how it was done 100 years ago , makes me want to clean up my grandfathers ( steam punk) drill press with the serpentine spoked drive wheel
Thanks again Randy! Wow, it would be great to see that one in use 😀👍
Impressed by manual tools and this oldest western shaving tools Thks

Love the restoration hate the music. So much better when it’s just the restoration. I struggle to watch the whole video with the annoying music in the background.
Thanks for the feedback Greig!
you are the perfect craftsman ! good job, super ...
Much appreciated, thank you!
Fantastic Restoration 👌 really enjoyed it..😊
Many thanks! Cheers!
I love the restoration and the hand powered tools, but the best part is the even, flat lighting and the quality camera work. It’s so nice to enjoy a video where the restoration work is the star of the show and not cheesy edits and overuse of fast forward. Less truly is more. Thank you!
Cool, thanks!

Greetings buddy, cool project, excellent restoration and beautiful result 👍
Thank you! Cheers!
not seen one of those before, good job on the restoration of it
That is good to hear, thanks a lot!
these are still used over here in germany to mark trees. two lines mean the trees ready for felling in 5 years, three lines mean the trees of lower quality and two lines with one line across means the trees dying and needs to be felled asap before someone gets hurt.
Thanks for sharing info!
Nicely done..Good job😍
Thanks a lot 😊👍👍👍
Nicely done Boris, great result! Love it. :)

Vielen Dank! Fröhliche Weihnachten 🎄
The brass elements are very nice.
I agree, thanks for watching!
My question is how did a young man like yourself learn these amazing old school techniques not to mention the old tools ?
From my grandfather and from my mistakes youtube.com/@FFD_Restorations/about
Obrigado!
Where I come from that’s a hoof trimming knife
😊👍
I think your right..
really like your tools.
Glad to hear that! Thank you so much Fred!
Always great work. Been waiting for your latest knife works video. Thx!
Many many thanks Mike 👍
Nice job 🌹🙏
Thanks a lot Radha!
That’s a good one
Cool, thanks Mike 😀👍
Ready for the next 100 years. When I first saw it I thought it was a farrier’s hoof knife.
😊👍
Same thing I thought at first glance
☺️👍
I am very impressed as always sorry I haven't been posting on your videos in awhile been busy with Christmas my favorite part is definitely when you were using the foot pedal scroll saw and Whetstone never seen those in your videos and I always love that you do the traditional ways of restoring items very impressive awesome work keep it up
No worries, thank you so much Tristan! Happy holidays 🎄
Cool video!
Thanks 😊👍
Great job! The brass liners were a nice touch. Merry Christmas! 😃👍🏼
Thank you David, Marry Christmas 🎄
I immediately subscribed! So glad to have found you. The restoration blew me away!
Thank you and welcome Adelheid! Happy to have you here ☺️👍
Good restoration pisau cukur interesting and nice even though we are far away but we can still connect and greet each other thanks my friend👍👍👍👍
😊👍 Thank you!
Love the old tools. I’d remove that big handle on the stone if it was me. I’ve only seen you use the foot peddle and that big handle takes up a lot of room and could be an accident ready to happen if you’re not paying attention. Great restoration as always.
Thanks Richard. I was thinking the same, I will probably remove it at some point 👍
If it was me it would be right after it raps my knuckles. 😞
Awesome informational educational video experience Y'alls God Bless Ya 🙏
😊👍
I'm always amazed by how well-thought and greatly built certain equipment could be in those days. And thanks to your brilliant work we can get a chance to see it again. You seem to have a good hand handling all the tools. If you don't mind me asking, is this what you do full time? 😅
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you very much Anisa. The quality of build for older tools can't compare with the modern ones. I have to say it is funny how these days companies produce environment friendly products but they can't last more than a few years... I learned a lot from my grandfather and father and am trying to explore more and learn more. No, I do not do this full time. I am doing something totally opposite 😂
@@FFD_Restorations I really have to agree. Even with electronics. My laptop of almost 10 years is doing so much better than new ones. That is good to know. Thank you for sharing. I look forward for more. Stay safe, Boris.
@@anisatania4036 it is my pleasure! Stay safe you too and Marry Christmas! Best wishes!
Very interesting knife, great work
Thank you so much Marina 😃👍
Masz zajebiste narzędzia ręczne.
Dzięki!
Good resto! Love the machinery. You can get a workout and get work done at the same time.
So true! Thanks a lot David!
That's a furriers knife. Most use a fixed blade, but being it's a pocket knife is what makes it rare. Nice job. I am sure there is some farrier someplace that wishes they had it.
😊👍 Thank you sir!
The olny reason I know that, is because I worked on a horse ranch when I was in my teens.
Nice work.Happy Christmas and a better 2021 to you all.
Thank you very much Mats, Happy Christmas to you too! ATB
it was nice
Thank you Riccardo!
As usual, exceptional work mate. I love my power tools but the quiet and serenity of your workshop really soothes the nerves. The knife turned out impressively well, but looks to be a horror to sharpen with that curved blade. Looking forward to your next project.
Thanks mate, I appreciate that. Yeah, definitely not easy one for sharpening 😆👍
Talk about amazing outcome! You did an excellent job if ive ever seen one. Subscribing.
Thanks and welcome 😀👍
Watching from the Philippines , Merry Christmas to you 🎄 🎅.
That is so cool, thanks for watching! Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎄
Great all was done manually
Thank you Joseph!
Unrelated ads randomly interrupting the video really affects the experience of watching your wonderful work.
Thanks for the feedback Lynn!
Nice work. Have a Happy Christmas and New Year Boris.
Thanks, you too! Best wishes to you and your family!
HI FFD very beautiful knife beautiful restoration good job well done I
Hello! Thank you so much Vince!
Vielen Dank!
Looks like a farriers handy knife !
Thanks for watching!
Now that is a cool knife! Great job on the restoration Boris!
Much appreciated Grant, thank you very much!
Love the videos! I want my shop to have all hand tools and treadle machines like yours. I might make restoration videos in the future. I hope we get to see more of those awesome treadle machines in future videos! I am starting off small posting restorations on Instagram.
Cool, thanks!
They still make them today, we always called them BT tools or knives. They are typically used to write on boundary trees for the national parks, state parks and the land that they own. Used them many times. It's a difficult part to write with them but it works.
Cool, thanks for the info!
Wow,a lot to say,but first I really appreciate all the new camera angles!!! I know it takes a lot more production and editing, but being able to observe you working from so many viewpoints, was just great, made me feel like I was there in the room!!👍👍👍 Also it's really cool seeing you use the previous tools you've restored !!!💯 Finally, great restoration, and Happy Holidays to you!!!!!!🎄🎁🎀🍾😁😁😁
Awesome, thank you thank you so much! I really do appreciate that and I am super happy that you are noticing the progress. Thanks again, Happy holidays to you and your family 🎄🎄🎄! Stay safe!
Well. Here in western america that is a hoof knife. Not a farriers hoof knife but a pocket hoof knife. It is used to clean gravel and trash out from the veins on either side of the frog on a shod hoof. And do minimal light trimming until the horse could receive professional care. Timber cruisers mark timber with a double bit ax called a cruisers ax. They bark off large areas the size of 2-3 open hands that can be seen easily in the forest from a distance. Not making little marks with a pocket knife. Even 100 years ago in europe the forests were large and dense. They used an ax. And 100 years ago in europe most people used horses that needed the hoof tended.
That was cool to read, many thanks! Take care!
Very interesting. The hooked blade is very similar to a Farrier's hoof knife, although the hook is slightly longer. (My grandfather was a farrier and I have most of his hand tools now) I'd love to have suggestions as to how to sharpen the hook.
Yeah , they are similar. Hey, that is very cool. My best suggestion is to use a wet sandpaper from 240 to 1200 grit on a wooden block and work around the curve. I think it took me around 1 hour to sharpen it ... Good luck!
@@FFD_Restorations Good idea, Thank You.
@@cantstandidiots5839 you are welcome
I love all your manually powered tools! Where can someone find them??
Thank you! I am finding them on a local website for ads here in Norway. It takes a lot of time to get one but they can be found 😉
Let’s take time to appreciate the fact that he used mostly hand tools
Thank you Dijon, very kind of you!
This is my first time on this channel, but certainly not my last. I love how you use hand tools only. Such a pity that you still use electric lights.... My compliments for this video, it is completely clear what you are doing. The brass liners, are they to compensate for wear or are they for even better looks?
Welcome! Thank you for the kind comment, I appreciate that. The brass liners are just for decorative purpose - matching the design with the brass pins 😉
Anyone know where (or what brand) of hand crank buffer that he is using? Would love one of those!
Hi Joel, it is AMERICAN GRINDER MFG.CO. produced in USA. I have actually restored that one. If you interested you can take a look for more details kzhead.info/sun/n6qQlMqMhH5spnA/bejne.html
The reason your sharpening wheel is oval and uneven is you have it standing in water, when not using it. This makes the stone soft on the side soaking up the water.
Possibly the previous owner did that, I never leave water in the tub...
Liked the way you do the restoration, authentic somehow. But combination with steel and brass do not cause galvanic corrosion?
Thank you so much! I think for galvanic corrosion you need an electrical source, so without electricity liners are fine 😉
Where can I find a knife like this. I would love to add it to my edc bag!
Best bet is Ebay or Amazon, but you have to be patient! Thanks for watching!
Where are you finding these old things man
Local website for ads!
I get the old-school tool hand crank foot pump vibe but instead of filing down a piece of brass why wouldn’t you cut it close with a hand hacksaw and then file at the rest of the way just curious?
I wanted to try something different 😉
Liked and Subbed. Nice channel you got here, my friend.
Thanks and welcome Andre 👋😀
Hola buenas.
great job. thanks
Thank you too!
Looks like the room from Saw
🙂👍
Hello, I'm French. I have got an old knife without handle and with the blade missing. Do you think you could fix it ?
Hi there! To make a new handle is not a problem, the missing blade is harder to replicate and it could take a lot of time to get it right. Is it the same as scribe pocket knife in this video or?
This looks like an old hoof knife that the blacksmithneeds for hoof care. It is used to cut out the frog and the sole.
Thanks Gebhard for the info, this one is actually specially produced for woodsman use to mark the trees ready to cut. They are not in use anymore, they are replaced with marking spray or highly visible strips...
Great content music is a bit intense though.
Thank you for the feedback!
