In this video I restore a massive Beatty Hog Splitter. It is essentially a giant cleaver that was used back when butchers did not have electric saws and all of that fancy stuff. These were used to split animal carcasses down the spine into two halves. I really enjoyed restoring/ modifying this beast because you don't see this kind of stuff very often especially on the west coast. I used gel wipe on Evaporust in order to soften up the surface rust and then used a coarse wire wheel to easily take off the softened rust.

Love the look and the handle and the grunge lookof the cleaver is beautiful 🤩! If you can spend an Hour sharping it, it will be a much sharper and better chopper blade.
Holy shit. That's a man spliter from head to crotch, lol. Loved to have seen this on the" Walking Dead". Well done Sir 👏
Very nice work. That's a Hog, Bull, Buffalo, Rino, Hippo, Elephant, Blue Whale, T-Rex, Megalodon, Spinosaurus splitter...!
Haha yes it is
This must be the legendary CADILLAC chopping cleaver grandpa spoke of. Nice to finally see a real one. Neat job.
Yeah it’s a really nice one!
Not even going to lie that was really impressive
Thank you! I appreciate it.
Great job
Put me down as impressed, great job once again look forward to you next video
Thanks for watching! Should have videos rolling out once every two weeks for the next couple of months at least. Leaving for college Friday so we'll see how much more time I'll have to film more videos.
Fine choice for the handle, professional work! I like it Dr G

Insanely Big Butcher Cleaver HANDLE restoration! 😃👍
Thanks for watching.
1 year I'm way behind on comment but I'm just thinking of just opening a beer bottle with end or coke bottle it's pretty cool I like the wood you chooses for it
Thanls for watching!
Nice work!

I have one that is very similar to this was made in the 1800's but I would never fix it up it looks well used as it is great job with the restoration
Sweet! These are around, just not very common
مشاء الله عليك. 😍 عمل احترافي شكرا لك اخي الكريم. استفدت منك كثير.. 😂،❤

That is awesome! Just found my great grandfathers in the attic of my families meat market. Exactly the same. Handle was wrapped just like that. Looks to be damn close on size too.
That’s awesome! I’m looking for more of these to restore on the channel, but they’re getting hard to find
@@TheRussianWoodworker I can send you mine 😂
I’m looking to refinish mine. Trying to find knife blocks for the handle. Can’t seem to find them long enough for this. Can you help me out?
That’s a hog splitter right there. Great job 👍🏾
You are correct just most people know what a Cleaver is and not very many know what a hog splitter is. Thanks for watching!

That is one sweet piece of steel... I would go with naval jelly for the initial strip.
Thank you! I don't really like naval jelly since it isn't the safest
A cleaver can be used for its weight, cutting and slicing meat, cabbage, hard vegetables.
Love that they use this in Friday the 13th game with part 4 Jason.
Thanks for watching!
look up re-sawing on the band saw...nice work
I've resawn lumber before just padauk is plentiful here thanks to all the cabinet shops throwing out scraps and planing them down was easier than resawing
My great Grand Father had one of these in the workshop I was forbidden to enter as a young child. I only know because an elder cousin once used it in a hockey mask to scare the life out of me around age 7~8. Never saw it again, never knew it was a "real thing" until just now. I just remember getting a good look at it when it was all over and it being in slightly better shape than yours when you started; of course this was 30+ years ago.

From Hog Splitter to Log Splitter. What type of wood did you use?
Thanks! It was a fun project and I used padauk for the handle scales.
Nice job on the handle! But you should have polished the blade out too. ...Next time maybe? 👍
Thanks for watching. I don't like polishing stuff in my opinion it makes old tools look ugky
Very nice.
Thanks for watching glad you liked it!
I do believe this is a hog splitter. Nice resto.

Good restorasi ...

Totally wrecked it... all that patina, iconic string around the handle..... say no more .. and cutting through a banana. what the hell!!!
Lol you're a fool
That's called a Hog Splitter and it was what was used to split animal carcasses
Yup
@@TheRussianWoodworker Also, thank you for not grinding the ever living shit out of it with an angle grinder and calling it a viking cleaver
What did you put on the handle from 13:36min to 14:38. By how your were handling it it appeared to be linseed oil or 50-50 linseed oil/varnish. Nice looking hog splitter.
BTW: Nice to see you left the patina on. Well done
Thank you!
I used Howard's Feed-N-Wax it's a beeswax based finish
Artesano 💯👌🏼

What is name of this red wood n what is the material of this clever is it hardened.
The wood I used for the scales is padauk. And the blade was already hardened that's why when I cleaned it up I made sure to keep it wet and cool to make sure I didn't ruin the best treat on it.
Truly a Cleaver used too divide asunder the limbs of bovine and Swine. Let's not forget elephant, hippopotamus, and rhino🐴

Anyway you did a great job.

If Clangs from Berserk were real, it would be impressive.
Haha for sure
A nice piece of restoration, I must admit though, when you started chopping into solid it did make me whince a little, nevertheless, really well done! (and your a Johnny Cash fan! Yay!)

Just add a chain to the handle, and you'll have the minimalist version of a chaos blade!

I have one like this but it has a longer handle. It's 32" long overall. Made by L & I J White Buffalo N.Y. I have no idea of what these are worth.
They are definitely uncommon. I have been offered 500 for the one I restored and I declined. I bought another unmarked one recently for 150
What kind of wood did you use for the handle scales?
Hello, thanks for watching. I used Padauk for the handle scales
If that thing could talk I tell you it could tell some stories the meat be like big john is here
Definitely it's a really cool piece of history

@@TheRussianWoodworker yeah I recognized it immediately from its size and learned about the Hog Splitter on the Outdoor Boys Channel where he restored a Hog Splitter and ever since then I've recognized them.
@@TheRussianWoodworker also great job on the restoration
@@fnafplayer6447 oh nice. I belong to a Facebook group that's called cleaver cult and it's basically just cleavers and people post hog splitters on there from time to time.
@@fnafplayer6447 thank you! This was definitely a fun one to do
Sorry, but your blade work doesn't cut it - no pun intended. No fine sanding to remove the grime and restore the shine. I understand your reluctance to erase the original maker's stamp, but this is a blade that need a lot more work, considering it takes almost a complete pass of your "sharpened edge" to cut a freakin' banana.
Thanks for watching
Que merda! Vou cortar com o cabo? A lamina continua enferrujada além de feia!
Why does everyone keep using epoxy? If rivited right, the furniture shouldn't be flying off
Because it's good
I'm not against that I just find it...unnecessary?
The handle is great but the blade is nasty and dirty yuck
All that to cut a banana 🍌
Don't have a hog to split :)
Muy mal filo y muy feo trabajo
Thanks for watching!
This fake rusty shit iys killing me.. why is everyone starting to do that?... put it in a lil water, add a lil heat, a lil spray paint, and you got rust in a day..
Definitely not what was done here. But if you want to believe that go ahead.
No very sharp
Are you referring to yourself?
@@TheRussianWoodworker no i'm talking about your edge it has trouble cutting the banana maybe it is too thick but if not apart from that you did a superb job on this meat grinder
@@gaijinsora1498 this is more of a chopping tool. It is a very steep angle. Also it's very awkward to hold
@@TheRussianWoodworker yes I understand it's a dream for me to have one like that one day and I just have a big hand loll
Got it
