Rare Double Cleaver [Black Blade With Kingwood Handle]
Anyone who likes old, rare things will love this restoration. I'm restoring an rare antique double cleaver! I have to work a lot on the lathe, grinding, drilling, thread cutting, working with chemicals and a lot more... I had to replace the old handle with a new one, this time made of kingwood. But I also worked with steel and brass. In the end, the antique cleaver will somehow look old and new! Stay tuned, and have fun watching!
▶ What did I do?! ◀
After dismantling the old, very rare hatchet, I placed the blade in a bath of rust remover. To prevent the blade from rusting, I treated it with iron(III)chloride. I made the new wooden handle out of kingwood and also made new caps out of brass. I made the entire handle on the lathe, so if you like working on the lathe, this is the project for you! Because I deliberately left the pitting, the double cleaver has a unique look, somehow new and old at the same time. With the knowledge that the wooden handle is made of “kingwood”, the unique cleaver immediately takes on a mystical character. I love it!
▶ Good to know ◀
I used the following tools: hammer, pin punch, box, rust remover, wire brush, belt sander, saw, center punch, cordless screwdriver, drill, tap, cutting oil spray, orbital sander, iron(III) chloride, steel wool, lathe, lathe chisel, center drill, boring bar, 1mm milling cutter, milling machine, sandpaper, tweezers, ruler, pencil, file, glue, isopropanol, cotton buds

I'm a traditionalist, so I'm glad that this wasn't titled as a restoration since many of the original parts were replaced with modified components.
The screw not sitting flush would bother my OCD but the handle is beautiful and I love how you got the blade darkened. Greeat job.
I don't know if you've ever done any metal work, but him dipping it in the acid was the easiest thing he did on that build. It looks nice, but also it helps keep the steel from rusting. You don't even need the acid, because some people just use boiling vinegar, and it does the same thing after a few dips. I do it all the time.
That turtle always lends support and makes me smile 🐢
Thank you very much, I'm very happy if you like my videos!🐢

Nice restoration but I think the screwhead looks a little brutal, maybe better to have been a dome shape?
Nah
I agree and I also feel the brass parts should be flush with the wood of the handle.
I would have loved to see so.e glue in the hole and then filed it flush with the end so it looks like nothings there
That's right, I admit that I actually had a completely different plan, I wanted to do away with the screw completely. But I liked it so much here that I left it.🐢

this is what i needed to see today; lets get this restoration party started xD
Same 😂
have a lot of fun 😁👍🐢
Beautiful work. The original brass rings would have been heated and then shrunk onto the wood, causing interference fit. This could have been a stronger fastening than machining a solid billet and bonding the wood to the axe. Beautiful turning work though.
You have recovered wonderfully. They look much nicer. Well done. That's always a great thing.👍👍👍👍
Thank you very much! 🐢
Nice restoration, thank you.
That was great, thanks! You put a lot of effort into creating this wonderful work ❤
Cleaver be lookin' hella dope, Forgotten Shine Restoration!
Thank you! 🐢
That was awesome, thanks! I love the colour of the wood you chose for the handle ❤️
Thank you, nice that you like it🐢
I loved the small details of removing excess glue
Thanks! 🐢
You got to respect both the modern and the older workmanship... Modern is beautiful, older is rustic... But older times they didn't have any power tools... It was all hand made... literally blood and sweat went into it.
Absolutely stunning
Thanks a lot! 🐢
Looks like the melee weapon in Quake lol
I love you and ur my favorite KZheadr ever!!!!!! Post more please❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤I look forward to you’re videos every day!!
Thank you very much, I'm very happy if you like my videos and projects! 🐢
Loved it!
A vous tous et à Tortue : je vous souhaite de très bonnes fêtes de fin d'année !🎉🎉🎉🎉
Merci beaucoup, nous te souhaitons également un joyeux Noël et une bonne année !🐢
I loved the result and truly admire your video 'style'; it's both clear/informative and, somehow, comforting to watch. I had never heard of kingwood and looked it up; it's a type of rosewood. Excellent grain.
Thank you very much, it's great if you like it! The wood is really great and goes really well with brass...🐢
Awsome job! I was wondering about the handle. Was there any reason why the handle wasn't epoxied on, along with the fastener? It didn't look like a very close tolerance fit when you slid the handle on. Just wondering...Thanks great video!
Magnifico resultado. 😅🖐🏻.
The complexion of the wood for the handle is quite fetching. Especially up against the shiny brass end caps.

I just found your videos. You do lovely work. I love your turtle friend! ❤
Thank you and welcome! 🐢
I had to look up king wood, it made a beautiful handle.
Tolle Arbeit ! Frohe Weihnachten 😊🐢🎄
Vielen Dank! Frohe Weihnachten! 🐢
There was a reason why the original handle wasn’t round. An oval cross section in the handle allows the user to index it it their hand and know the direction of the blades without having to look at it. This blade is obviously to hang on a wall and will probably never see any practical use, but you should still understand a tool before “restoring” it. You also significantly weakened the handle by removing all that metal at the top, but again…wall hanging.
Amazing Jeff
Exactly my thoughts, nice skills but that clever will never be used as a tool again. His hollow handle is kept together only by that little screw. I have never seen a handle made like this honestly. But again, nice looking
Bet you're fun at parties.
@@itstricky73 at least my boy Jeff is interesting, you sound like one of them at a party everyone walks away from 🙃😉
It's incredibly easy to know the direction of the blades without looking at it. All you have to do is hold it and you can feel the direction the weight is pulling you. Weight distribution is how your brain knows how to orient your own body. Your brain is designed more for that than for touching.
Video quality is so good. Nice to see small details
Thank you for your great feedback! 🐢
Absolutely beautiful 😊😊

Thankyou for the video, nice work.
Thank you, too! 🐢

Beautiful restoration mister good job well done
Thanks! 🐢
Gorgeous work 🥇 thank you for leaving the patina, time marks of the steel and also perfect color of wood 👏🏻👏🏻
Thanks too! Nice that you like it 🐢
looks like the main body is wrought iron. the edges are probably high carbon steel forge welded on.
Definitely. You can see the difference in sparks while he's grinding the top contour. I let out a "Nooo!" when he took an orbital sander to the grain of the wrought iron. Still turned out great.

Thank you very much! 🐢
Looked like the harden steel was almost all gone on one side It looks great and you did a wonderful job restoring it as well!!!! I enjoyed your video so I gave it a Thumbs Up
Thank you very much! 🐢
I think cleavers and other kitchen knives have hardened steel only on one side
That handle is gorgeous!!! I've never seen wood like that, it's amazing! I also especially loved that shot of your hand reflected in the rust remover, very ominous and dramatic! And thank you again for all the informative captions 😊 Happy holidays to you and turtle! 🐢🐢🐢
Thank you, Nice that you like it🐢
Really fun Greetings, my friend
I’m curious as to how you recycle/repurpose all the metal filings.
Love the color of the handle. And as always loved seeing Turtle. Where was Turtles are 🐢 friend?❤
Thanks, glad you liked it... turtle's friend was kind of upset, maybe they had an argument... 😱😅🐢

Another gorgeous restoration! Merry Christmas!
Thank you very much! Merry Christmas!🐢
¡Qué preciosidad! La madera del mango es muy bonita. Un saludo desde España para ti y para 🐢. ☺️
¡Gracias! Me alegro si te gusta 🐢
ther reason it looks like wood is because that piece of metal was the result of folding and forge welding and stretching and repeating bunches of time, likely incorporating many recycled chips and maybe old nails or whatever. that looks a hell of a lot like pre industrial revolution forging to me. what a beauty. thanks for giving it that old shine back. definitely deserves it. as a hunter of elk and mule deer i would find this beastie incredibly useful.
Thank you for your feedback, do you really think it's that old? 🐢
If it’s old enough, it’s more likely that is a wrought iron body with hardenable steel forge welded onto the cutting edges. Wrought iron looks like wood grain, just as this one does.
Блестящая реставрация, очень рад что оставили не тронутой фурнитуру лезвия. А рукоятка бесподобная красота. Спасибо за видео и перевод, лайк однозначно🙏

Incredible restoration sir, thanks for sharing this video. Instead of using the FeCl, could you have electroplated nickel to avoid future rust? Wishing you and your family a blessed holiday season. Peace

Would have been cool to make the screw a loop for hanging. Otherwise looks great.
Cool idea! My plan was actually to file away the screw, but I liked it better this way...🐢
nice, you can cut 2blocks, simultaneous stroke, One on the down stroke.. One on the up stroke 😅..
I have never seen those types of cutters. Also.....do you save your brass shavings?
Yes, I'll collect the brass and give it away later 🐢

Round axe handles are prone to slipping in the hand during use.
Wrought iron?
Yes... 🐢
No bras polish? Sad. But result is still awesome!
You are so wonderful, I want to ask you something, can I know the name of the rust remover water you poured on the axe at the beginning?
Thanks! I used this one, it works very well! amzn.to/3vdQ52f 🐢
Awesome Work...I love the wood, where did it grow up?
Thank you, it most likely comes from Brazil🐢
Why you not test it?
