Join me as I set off on another epic tank build. This time the incredible 1/6 scale Hetzer or Jagdpanzer 38 tank by Armortek.
In this video - I install the 3 main servos which operate and command the Gun and Slew mechanism to the rear of the Glacis plate and then go on to install the Glacis plate in its final position.
Hope you enjoy

  • I enjoyed this hour again, Tony! I attach a small magnet to the base of the screwdriver and use the magnetic force to hold the screws in place. I ended up buying several tools just to tighten the screws. It's finally nearing completion. I'm looking forward to the next time.

  • Nice work on the servos there and aligning the gun mantlet and barrel. You are like me, OCD on proper fitting. Drives me crazy to want perfection. Enjoy watching you work and looking forward to your next installment.

    • Thanks Bill...yes...I do beat myself up when something like this cannot be as I want it. Off camera I worked on it a bit more and improved it. I am sure when it is finished with the mock welding etc, it will look fine and hard to distinguish. Hope all is well and thank you for your continued support.

  • Well what a fiddly job this session. Great to view and experience with you your frustrations but that is what being a perfectionist is like. Too much thread lock on your clothing!! Who does the washing? Ha ha. Cheers Tony.

    • Thanks Warren and great to hear from you again. I did manage to improve the gap a little off camera, but it still bugs me...I am sure however when I do the mock welding, that will sort it out. My poor wife does the washing, but she says it is not as bad as when I used to work a lot with silicon on other projects...I managed to get that all over me😂 Hope all is well.

      @tonys_workshop@tonys_workshop3 ай бұрын
    • Silicone is awful. Having worked in the glazing and shopfitting industry I used to get covered in the stuff!! I've just started building a Meng plastic model of a Chieftain tank.My wife bought the model as a xmas pressie but overlooked how much kit and tooling etc. I need to build it. Ah well ..... boys and their toys!!

  • I'm a bit confused about why the glacis biscuit joints aren't flush. They should be square with no step. I know you've built it all separately and added it later, whereas at the factory, that plate went on quite early, so all those alignments were made before building the gun, sides plates, etc. All the brackets inside were slotted, I believe, so everything should jig around into position. I wonder if you glueing the nuts in place has compromised that adjustment allowance? I know it's a struggle getting to those bolts though. I believe Chris used some long curved surgical type pliers to hold the nuts. You said about machining the thickness of the plate down. DO NOT DO THAT you'll have to rework the whole gun slew mechanism as well or remachine the internals of the casting and we can't do it at the factory as I've reused the fixtures elsewhere now 😂

    @seantwig9577@seantwig95773 ай бұрын
    • Hi Sean, I did a lot of head scratching over this. The sides and back align perfectly as does the top. The Glacis plate now aligns with the top and sides as I expect they should. I managed to reduce the gap on the biscuit joints but they still sit proud. I broke the glue seal from the brackets to allow the plate to slide a tad and this worked to reduce the gap, but still sits about 1.5mm proud. It is not a problem as I am sure the mock welding will disguise this issue. Rightly or wrongly, I was more concerned about the roof section fitting with the Glacis plate, sides and rear plate and it does perfectly. As you know, the space is tight and the angles make it difficult to work with, but off camera I managed to improve this with some stubborn and frustrating moments. Don't worry, I have no intention of machining the plate for the reasons which you mention and the fact I thinks it looks perfectly fine as it is. I do tend to talk while I am thinking, so please forgive me. Thanks for all your amazing work and for continuing to watch and comment on my channel, it means a great deal to me.

  • Tony bud looking really good I do like the look of the hetzer On the front plate if you wanted to bring it up to be flush you could fill it then mark where the weld beads go once applied be seamless/I did the touch cutting marks with a grinder to simulate that with the interlocking plates add a bit more detail just a thought Other option is to cut 3 small square fillets metal/plastic to sit on the lower plate to bring it up just below/flush with the upper plate once painted no one will know Look forward to the next one

    @garyrafferty8653@garyrafferty86533 ай бұрын
    • Hi Gary, great ideas and thank you. A tad frustrating this part of the build, as I am bit of a perfectionist and it is winding me up. Off camera I worked on it a bit more and improved it. Pretty sure that by the time the mock welding is done, it will help to mask the raised areas, but I will see and if this does not work, then I may go for fillets as you suggest. Hope all is well and speak soon mate.

      @tonys_workshop@tonys_workshop3 ай бұрын
  • I know you mentioned it last time but that alignment at the front is odd, mine went together without that problem and, like yourself, I can't see any reason why yours sits proud like that. I need to take the front plate off mine to fix a couple of issues with my servos as the connectors shook loose during the summer and I also realised watching your build that I left out the short bushing on my gun mount! I will take the opportunity to do as you did and glue in the nuts on the lower front brackets so I can used them as opposed to just making them 'dummy' connectors as was my plan before. Watching this series has been great and it is providing me the impetous to put the finishing touches on mine now the steel sprockets are fitted as this needs to be charging around as I intend to take it on a European holiday to Militracks in May :-)

    @daniel_scholefield@daniel_scholefield3 ай бұрын
    • Hi Daniel, good to hear from you. Yes...very frustrating, but everything else lines up beautifully. I did manage to improve it slightly away from camera but still not as I would want it. I think it will be fine by the time I do the dummy weld, but other commentators on here have suggested adding fillet pieces which I think is a good idea...Going to mull that over for a while before I decide. When you say the connectors shook loose, are these the double ended threaded connectors? That sounds very annoying, especially knowing how difficult it is to remove the front plate. Glad to hear that my videos are helping a little. This may interest you, I am currently working up plans for a 1/6 scale tank battle zone here in the UK. I have a plot of land, the ideas, concept design and some enthusiastic helpers. Not sure if it will be ready this year, but when it is, I will let people know on my channel.

  • I am more than happy about your great pronunciation of the German „Saukopfblende“! Well done, Tony! 👍 On the lower front glacis plate: how about adding some plastic or metal sheet pieces, to get the recesses almost up to the level of the glacis? Many thanks for working in most awkward angles to allow your viewers to see things! My respect for this! Adding all this stuff at the inside of the gun mount really is hardcore. But, your patience prevailed. I keep on watching and learning from you!

    • Hi and thank you. Glad I nailed the pronunciation correctly. Difficult part of the build trying to get everything aligned. Pretty sure the gaps will disappear when I do the mock welding but thank you for the suggestion, I may still go on to do that, but will see what it looks like when it is welded. Thank you for your amazing and continued support.

    • @tonys_workshop I had to learn Spanish at school, but German looked easier... On the street where I grew up there were two German ladies who settled in Norwich, from Dresden after the war, both Regina & Gerda (I think that's how you spell it) we're lovely and alway very kind to me, both sadly now gone. Those pesky Grandkids, you'd think they would be a help rather than a hindrance 😆
