The latest addition to AMERICAN EXPERIENCE’s Peabody Award-winning series of presidential biographies, this two-part, four-hour look at the life and presidency of George W. Bush features interviews with historians, journalists and several members of the president’s inner circle.
Part One chronicles Bush’s unorthodox road to the White House. The once wild son of a political dynasty, few expected Bush to ascend to the presidency. Yet 36 days after the November 2000 election, Bush emerged the victor of the most hotly contested race in the nation's history. Little in the new president’s past could have prepared him for the events that unfolded on September 11, 2001. Thrust into the role of war president, Bush's response to the deadly terrorist attack would come to define a new era in American foreign policy.
Part Two opens with the ensuing war in Iraq and continues through Bush’s second term, as the president confronts the devastating impact of Hurricane Katrina and the most serious financial crisis since the Great Depression.

  • On 9/11, I had already drafted my letter resigning my officer's commission from the National Guard. I was tired of the military and eager to spend more time and energy on my civilian job. I ended up spending another nine years in uniform. Before I finally retired for good, two of my sons were in the USMC, and a third in the Army, serving in Afghanistan.

  • Another case of Federal gubment incompetence! The US intelligence agencies were warned by many foreign agencies an impending aircraft attack was developing. I was a pilot flying a Waco Biplane giving tourist rides around Marathon, Florida Keys. afternoon Aug 25, 2001 I greeted two dark completed guys at my office. The heavyset guy did the talking, I couldn’t pronounce his name after several inquests I said I’m just going to call U “ Al”. The other guy was short and chiseled and would barely speak or make eye contact, his name was easy Mohamed. They told me they were airline pilots in training. After the flight they told me I would hear about them or they would be famous....I was troubled, walked in my office and picked up my receipt book and studied the signature on the receipt and pondered what did they mean by that? As soon as I saw Mohammad on tv I recognized him, the other guy was Marian Al Sherri, the #1&2 WTC pilots. The FBI met with me , I gave them the receipt. The terrorist also met with another flying business at Marathon airport. Local newspapers wanted to interview me but I didn’t want any part if the infamy. A few months later the Keys newspapers noted the thugs were tracked thru the Keys that weekend on their last hurrah , hitting bars and strip joints in KW. I guess the terrorist knew those 69 virgins were just another fairytale of theology , like every fkn religion.

  • Adam McKay’s disaster satire Don’t Look Up is many things at once: a parable of our distracted society, a primal scream of a warning, and a broad comedy from the writer/director of Anchorman. Such a delicate balance has made the star-studded Netflix film a polarizing movie. Critics, audiences, and activists have both savaged and praised the movie, and the backlash has highlighted the difficulty of conveying an urgent message with comedy. Has political satire lost its power? Or has reality become so absurd that it’s now beyond parody?
