FRONTLINE investigates Russian President Vladimir Putin’s clashes with five American presidents as he’s tried to rebuild the Russian empire.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate.
Drawing on in-depth conversations with insiders from five U.S. presidential administrations, former U.S. intelligence leaders, diplomats, Russian politicians, authors and journalists, “Putin and the Presidents” reveals how the miscalculations and missteps of multiple American presidents over two decades paved the way for Putin’s attack on Ukraine - as seen through the eyes of people who were in the room.
The documentary traces how, prior to launching the war on Ukraine, Putin tested the waters by defying American presidents for 20 years - including by invading Georgia, seizing Crimea, and interfering in a U.S. presidential election. The documentary provides unique insight into the icy relationship between Putin and current U.S. President Joe Biden, both of whom were shaped by the Cold War, and into the evolution of Putin’s grievances with the U.S. and the West.
As Russia’s war on Ukraine continues, “Putin and the Presidents” gives essential context for this historic moment.
“Putin and the Presidents” is a FRONTLINE production with the Kirk Documentary Group. The director is Michael Kirk. The producers are Michael Kirk, Mike Wiser and Vanessa Fica. The writers are Michael Kirk and Mike Wiser. The reporter is Vanessa Fica. The editor-in-chief and executive producer of FRONTLINE is Raney Aronson-Rath.

Why do you forget about the thousands of deaths of Iraqis who wanted to live in a democratic country, but Saddam decided to completely deprive them of their lives? Why do you forget about the millions of Kurds whom Saddam poisoned with chemical weapons? Why do you forget about the invasion of Kuwait, whose consequences led to an environmental disaster (due to burning oil) and, as a result, a million cancer cases? Why do you forget Iraq's war against Iran, in which many millions died?

    • There are literally no similarities between Ukraine and Iraq. Iraq under Saddam Hussein's rule started numerous wars against its' neighbors in the middle east. Hussein himself wasn't a good guy, he was a tyrant whose death Iraqis celebrated. Ukraine did not start any wars against its' neighbors, Zelensky unlike Hussein is a democratically elected president of Ukraine. What you did is called "whataboutism". American invasion of Iraq was wrong but it doesn't justify what Russia did to Ukraine

And probably place their nuclear weapon there as well. All ukraine had to do was agree that they wouldn't join NATO. Let's say if russia places their troops on US borders, what would you think will happen ?. Move on to iraq. So what does justify the US to kill saddam hussein ? They claimed that iraq has WMD. They didn't attack iraq because saddam hussein was a bad guy but because they made a false accusation that iraq has WMD backed by israel. I think nentanyahu's full speech is still somewhere in the medsos. He talked about how these countries will threaten israel's existence in the future

    • @@wasdgamings ...actually if I were a boomer, I would likely already be in my 70s, I'm a joneser, a member of the so called lost generation that came between the boomers and the Xers, to which no specific social engineering was targeted at, although the dates for jonesers has been manipulated too and combined in with the boomers because so many of the jonesers just adopted the social engineering and marketing that was aimed at the boomers. Keep in mind here, that the boomers were the first US generation to be greatly influenced and manipulated by television, as were and are most individuals of all generations hence, the generation classification itself is used to identify what particular social engineering and marketing that each generation hence was or is exposed to, however as a member of the "lost" generation, I had the unintended advantage to look at one or all. and consequently i noticed the changes between them perhaps more so than many others that were specifically being targeted and basically never completely vibed with any of them. Further, I am at the very beginning of the so called lost generation, before such loss was noticed and patched up. I never adopted or incorporated the social engineering/marketing targeting the boomers or those generations that followed, and rather than looking to any of the post TV generations for insight, I looked more to the WW2 and WW1 generations (as well as first editions of books) for guidance and education - to which my immediate boomer elders were already in the process of distancing themselves from their elders, parents and their knowledge base as a result of the social engineering/marketing and related control of pop culture via television that was already targeting them, just as current generations are so targeted and manipulated. Hence the boomers were also known for their "tune in, turn on and drop out" pop culture. This disconnect between elders, parents and their offspring provided for a block or disconnect in the ability for parents and other elders to pass down their acquired living experience and prime source knowledge, as such, this functioned to force the generations that followed to be more dependent on mass media and the written word as virtually their only source for historical information, of course both mass media and the written word can be colored, shaded and/or re-written to conform with any particular narrative or agenda that the controlling "elites" wish to present. :-)
